Has anyone had a new engine put in yet under the recall?

Mine is at the dealership now, awaiting new engine... like your original post said, still sitting where the tow truck dropped it. They put me in a 2025 Limited, so not hurting but would rather have my truck back.

QUESTION: other than the recall notice, did you get any notification from Toyota corporate that an engine had been allocated for your truck? I would assume they would have to assign a specific engine to a VIN, but unclear how they're doing this. Thanks in advance.

 

Dealer didn’t know if Toyota was offering additional warranty over and above original 100k factory one. I haven’t seen anything yet on Toyota plans to extend warranty on replacements, my assumption is that they will. I will worry about that if the need arises. I’m just glad they stepped up and replaced complete crate engine and not use parts from original to rebuild short block. factory built vs rebuild at dealer less chance for something to go wrong hopefully

 

Only communication I had was with my local dealer. They were great passing information along as they received it from Toyota. Sounded like everything was decided by corporate but that is probably how it always works. I think you are right about Toyota corporate assignment of engine serial# to truck vin#. Mine was second Tundra engine failure at my dealer, first one was there about a month when mine failed. Originally Toyota authorized short block for one before mine to be rebuilt. Mine was first one authorized for complete crate engine. First Tundra getting a complete new engine now as well but mine was the first complete engine to arrive and be installed. That’s why I think serial# for engine assigned to my Tundra vin# by manufacture

 

I am on the return drive of a 2500 mile road trip with my 2023, has 24,000 miles on the clock. 1800 miles down, ~700 to go. Engine still running like a top, but will I make it home? Stay tuned. ;-)

 

Mission successful. I almost hate to give this engine up, it runs so well. But for the replacement... Is there an easy place to check the engine (or block) serial #? I'd like to check it before and after the work is done.

Where does the old engine go after they swap them? As you state, yours is running fine. Can you keep them? I doubt it but it would be nice.

Will toyota be "refurbishing" 100k engines and re-selling? Where do they go!

 

I hear they have to drill holes in the turbos and the block and they get shipped somewhere for recycling.

 

Oh wow, I have never pulled an engine, but I didn't think it would require trashing the engine. Or is that what they require the tech's to do, so that they won't resell them themselves?

 

It's what they want to happen to all of the old, poorly executed examples of the 3.4TT so they can attempt to salvage their reputation and not have this saga live on beyond the recall.

 

It is to keep folks from selling them secondhand.

 

Don't worry, you're a long way from getting a new engine... those of us with blown engines sitting at dealerships while we drive loaner/rental trucks at Toyota corporate's expense will be in line first.

My Service Advisor seems to know nothing about how the process works... nothing in my app has changed, no indication in the status, no written communication of any kind. I called Toyota Brand Engagement yesterday to make sure they were aware my truck was in need of "the remedy" just to be sure.

 

We just had our first kid and I’ve quickly realized that as a family we have or are quickly going to outgrow my 3rd Gen Tacoma. I have been considering a Tundra but given cost, my budget really only allows me to look at a used ‘22 or ‘23, which given the recall isn’t the most confidence inspiring for longevity and reliability.

I will say that I am impressed with how Toyota has handled this issue from an outside perspective, I’m sure those who have had to wait months or have had their engines fail would argue differently.

It could be the lack of sleep with a newborn but I feel like these engine issues have dampened the Toyota tax on these Tundras, which is a potential good opportunity. There is also the argument that you can drive the original engine for as long as possible and then get an entire new engine at some point, which on paper sounds great.

For those of you who have been impacted, or even those who haven’t but are on the list, would you do it again or would you avoid these years?

I have read that Toyota is offering a 12 month warranty from the date of replacement, or will honour the original warranty, which ever is greater. Is this true?

I have also read some folks saying that the replacement engine feels like it runs a lot better than the original, and potentially between mpg. Can anyone speak to this?

 

Got mine back January 7th after 2+ months at the dealership, have 1500 miles on it. To me, it feels like the lag many are experiencing is much better, but still there... common with turbos, I've been told. Runs fine, still getting 17-20 mpg, 10-12 when towing.

I bought Toyota's extended 8 year/125k Platinum Warranty before I hit 36,000 miles, the new engine is covered under that.

 

Smart play on the extended warranty. I am looking to buy privately, so I'm not sure if I can buy extended, but it is worth calling around to a few dealerships and asking about it! The one I am looking at is a '22 and has around 65,000 km, so I believe it is still in the 100k/60 month window for powertrain. I'm just not sure if I can buy extended.

 

65k km is over 40k miles, so no... the extended warranty is not available. I would keep looking

 

I am in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and just got the call for my new engine under recall. I bought one of the first in Canada [2022 Limited Gas], Dec 29, 2021, building date November 2021. I have 60,000 km, and have had zero engine issues. Only complaint were the drive seat plastic cracking [replaced under warranty] and a squeaking centre console [Fixed with some Amazon.ca rubber gasket]. We'll see how it goes. Mar 3, 2025 is my repair date and they said they'd need it for 1-3 days. They are arranging a rental, and will complete all of my other outstanding recalls [Fuel line] while it's there. I was told by service that I'm part of the first 24 engines to be alotted to the dealership. Hoping for the best.

Thanks, good to have it back... nice to have the 2025 Limited as a loaner for 2 months, but I missed my 1794. Added vent lights (DRL/turn signals) and Diode Dynamics fog lights this week

 

I drove to Richmond and back yesterday and was thinking the same thing. It’s basically trucker land once you clear DC. Be a B to break down anywhere around there.

 

Since I wrote that post I did make one round trip to FL and back and made it though just fine. I may be doing another one in a month or so. Maybe tempting fate? IDK.

 

I’ve driven to Charlotte and back about 5 times. Never really thought of what if until yesterday. I would imagine since the issue is such a prevalent topic on this forum and it’s hammered in my brain. For the majority of owners that don’t read this forum it almost certainly doesn’t cross their mind.

 

This past November, when I took my annual drive to/from MI, I stuck to the highways just in case. Typically I'd take back roads between 75 and 65 through GA and AL, but that's like 3 hours of nothing and very little cell coverage. Wasn't taking the chance. Next year I might, especially since the whole satellite backup on my cell phone is working.

 

I took mine in to the dealer today to get the new engine installed. I inquired about warranty and was told that Toyota is not restarting the powertrain warranty. Therefore I only get the remaining balance that I have left from the original purchase date. I can understand why they don’t restart the bumper to bumper warranty but the engine warranty should allow a new 60 months, 100,000 mile warranty. With all of the problems that they have had with the engines I am not happy that I only have a 2 year warranty left on this new engine.

I called Toyota corporate and they confirmed that they will not restart the warranty time on the engine. As a LONG time Toyota customer I will definitely remember and consider this before making another Toyota purchase!!!

 

I dropped off my truck for engine replacement on the 7th and am still waiting for an update. They said it would take at least a week or two.

 

Did they not have the engine on-site before you brought it in?

 

They do have engine, just taking their time. Talked to service advisor today and doesn't look like they trying to get it done quick, they gave me a taco loaner and think that I should be fine.

 

Were you having any issues, or did you just want to go ahead and swap it? I'm sitting at 36k on my '22, so low miles. Thinking of waiting a while before switching, but worried about breaking down. Kind of a hard option to weigh out.

I had mine replaced in January. I decided to trade it in since I got a decent trade in offer combined with the sales tax benefit. Look it over good. I’m glad I traded mine in because I was missing clips and bolts on the front end (they took it apart). I verified all this because I had to uninstall my Alpharex lights.

I would’ve complained but my 25 was already at the lot waiting.

 

There are so many gadgets to plug in and bolt on, half of them are bound to go loose or not even be bolted down after a repair like that not sure how people can be filled with joy when truck has to go into that kind of service. It'll never be the same after it!
