Tonight I made it two blocks away from home and had a P0705 fault with a drive start control error message. Turning off and on made no difference. Felt sluggish immediately. Checked on scanner and got the code. Reset it on a whim. Turned on , still showing reverse light no matter what gear. Turned off and checked underneath, no fluid leaks or anything - started up and all was normal. Looks like it needed to sit for a minute or two to clear. I'll take to dealership tomorrow.

that's odd. I had a similar code when I pulled into a parking spot too fast and shut it down. maybe just a warning...

This happened while moving from a stop light. R lot up on the PRND lights and the rear camera activated and flashed back and forth between camera and Android Auto. I shifted to park/reverse/drive and it sounded bad and lurched.

Dealership said to drive it until it happens again. So it left me stranded tonight and is being towed. Dealership said if it's anything electric/sensor it's not covered by drive train warranty. Crappy.

I would double check that. Typically, powertrain warranty includes all electronics related to the powertrain.

I'll definitely double check. This dealership's service department has been underwhelming. Of course, the Tundra has not been a great experience overall so far. My 2012 Tacoma was bomb proof.

Failed shifter/shift position sensor. They're denying warranty.

I'd call Toyota North America and talk with them.

    How many miles? it’s a 2022?

that should be a relatively inexpensive repair, but damned if that isn’t some B.S.

I might have some words for Toyota

2022 with 48k miles. It could be inexpensive but since it wasn't drivable I had it towed to dealership. So I'm pretty stuck. I do all my own maintenance so I would have done the repair myself if I had known they wouldn't cover warranty. I should have known though, they were spinning theories of chewed wires by rodents before they even saw the vehicle. They said warranty is only for parts that touch oil/lube, no electronics. Warranty doesn't really say for sure. Only electronics I'm seeing is the engine control computer.

I feel like engine control computer could be construed as including the sensor.

I’d definitely bring this up to Toyota N.A. IANAL… but generally speaking, a vehicle needing to be towed indicates the failure of a drivetrain component.

Called Toyota today. They said it's not covered because it's not specifically listed in the document I shared a snip of earlier.
It dropped power while driving - you'd think that would be a safety concern too. My last two Toyotas were great and this one has been a mess. The lack of support is super surprising though.

After replacing the sensor they experienced issues shifting etc. so now it's being examined for transmission issues. Apparently the tech took it on a test drive and didn't make it far. Not sure if they towed it or drove it back after they noticed the problem.

Sounds like it needs a transmission. Keep us posted.

That's what it sounds like to me. It wasn't grinding or crunching but it's it lurched when trying to get into neutral and park.

Latest update - water intrusion in the tail light assembly caused a short to ground. So now another week wait for parts.

Man that’s wild my neighbor's ford did that. Except would make the trucks alarm go off randomly and the parking lights would stay on.

Did Toyota hire Ford engineers for the 3rd generation Tundra development?

    It would explain a lot.

Just shy of 3 weeks later. I got the truck back. Left reverse/backup lamp assembly short was the issue.. from what I can tell. The story seemed to change constantly. They recreated the failure and drove it that way nothing a chirp as it tried to engage reverse while moving forward. According to the notes they repeated this unplugging lights until they figured out the cause. Hopefully no permanent damage from this. Reassembly of the shifter area they crunched a USB connector I had routed for a QI charger and they dumped everything that was in the way into the driver's floor mats and left it that way.

There are many complains about dealers on this forum. But none is named. Is it against Code of Conduct? If there any place to read about which is the best dealer in my area?
