I had no problem w/this young lady (I mean couple) bringing their pup to their local Irish Pub on St. Paddy's day to share a pup-sized Guinness...

    upload_2024-11-8_7-3-56.jpg

... now you want to talk about what's NOT appropriate to bring to your local food establishment??? In this case, it's the douchy boyfriend w/that stupid hat on his head; should've left him at home!!!!

And grocery stores. Or even Target. Not a grocery store as a stand alone but they do sell groceries, pillows, towels... A lot of people are allergic to dogs dander so they don't belong unless you need them there for your actual service.

Home Depot? Still subjective but also still unnecessary. It's not like you need them there for their opinion about what electrical box you need or which color blinds would look best...

3 car pile-up in a construction zone (no shoulder) that was already going slow b/c of an earlier accident 2miles down the road.

Whatever this forum told me to do

    this is my general disposition.

    it's a dog.

I've had dogs all my life.

    I know what dogs are.

when we were little, did we bring dogs to a food joint?

    no.

    we were smarter than that.

If the dog is well mannered/trained, I have no problem with it.

Your average dog is a better person than your average person. They should be treated as such.

In all seriousness, it should be up to the business. I can tell you, I would actively patronize a dog friendly business for 99% of any business I conduct so long as the dogs were expected to be well behaved.

This is the slippery slope. Dogs are raised by humans and your average human sucks in regard to how to be a human to other humans in a social setting. You've already pointed this out. Of the myriad of dogs I see on our patio, where we do allow dogs, they tend to act like their me first selfish human owners. Maybe 3/10 dogs are trained well enough to be well mannered and the "bad dogs" aren't the problem. It's the human who trained, or shall we say didn't train, their dog.

Now obviously some like @Tripleconpanna or others who take training their dogs seriously, I have no qualms with those dogs in our businesses. But we all know those people are in the minority. So I'm a no your dog that is barking at me doesn't belong in target kinda guy.

About 15 years ago the eagle county health inspector was issuing citations to businesses for allowing dogs on patios. It's a health code and only service dogs were allowed.

I have absolutely no problem with well mannered dogs in any establishment besides an operating room or a kitchen. I totally understand asking if a dog has a paperwork when it's being naughty or disruptive but if a dog is being the epitome of well-behaved, going up and asking if it's certified is crazy. My brother-in-law is a veteran and his service dog is a large part of his life.

It's not crazy when you run a food service business. It's your obligation to manage that business for the entire community. And also a requirement of you as a proprietor to maintain your annual license. If you get a violation for allowing non service based dogs in your establishment you can have your license revoked.

I'm saying that well-behaved dogs regardless if they are clearly marked should be left alone. I saw a dog in the grocery store a couple years back that was carrying its own leash with only eyes for its owner. Didn't glance my way and stayed on his owner's hip the entire time. It didn't say service animal on it but it wasn't hurting anyone or anything

Whatever this forum told me to do
here is where I stand firm.

say I'm eating in a food joint.

and you and your dog come sit next to us.

    I, in no way:

know the disposition of your dog
want to sit next to a dog
want to eat next to your dog
think it's proper to eat next to a dog.

and the rub is....the folks with dogs NEVER ask the nearby folks if it's ok to sit next to them.
