So my mechanic said he found that the housing was cracked today. When I asked how it happened he couldn’t explain it. Thing is, I only go to the same place. Any chance these things can just break without being over torqued? It’s my 2017 not my 2001.

Yes. I have a digital torque wrench that goes from 5-100. I can dial it into exactly 18.0 lbs and my plastic one still developed a hairline crack after 35k miles. Swapped over to metal after that. 55k miles since and no issues.

Never heard of a metal housing cracking. I suppose it's possible, but they would have had to torque that thing pretty tight. I have one on my Tundra, both my daughters' RAVs and my wife's Lexus NX. No issues. I've had a plastic one crack. It was old and whoever had put it on, cranked it on way too tight. Cracked when trying to get it off.
