Branding is very common out here in rural E. WA.

Got kicked in the face a few years back helping my buddy brand his steers.. got a black and blue lip out of the deal

 

I like that approach! We don’t really do much these days, as far as gifting surprise items — I try to head that off. I’m too picky. We do make lists for each other. But the problem is she doesn’t want anything. So I have to keep her guessing and just get her holiday gifts. She’s also insanely into stocking stuffers so everyone gets a bunch of little stuff, and 75% is good. So that’s her outlet and I buy myself the gifts I want if I feel like it makes sense. If she wants something, she can go buy it but she won’t do that. Really what I’m saying is that I have the perfect wife now that I think about it.

It is because of public lands in the west - a concept foreign to those east of the Missouri River. And Kansas City, Kansas, although west of the Missouri was carved out of branding because of the stockyards that were located there. States west of the Missouri River have branding laws that require registration of brands and brand inspections upon sale of the animals. There are 8 locations for brands on animals - left or right, hip, ribs, shoulder, head. You can have the same brand but in a different location provided you are not in an adjoining county.
