Halloween tradition, we have chili for dinner and I hand out candy. This year instead of my wife making the chili, I saved her the chore and bought Costco's deli chili and in the process discovered 2 things.

    1. Costco makes some damn good chili.

    2. The beans/no beans debate has finally been settled. Even Costco agrees, proper chili has beans in it, no further discussion needed.

My parents are in the early stages of looking for a new vehicle. We had high hopes that an awd RAV4 would be the right vehicle. Went along on the test drive of a 2019 tonight. Damn does the front half suck. Way too narrow. My dad is a pretty big guy and I'm slightly over average size as well. He said he probably could put up with the passenger seat but when he sat in the driver seat it was an immediate no go. I couldn't stand sitting in the passenger seat, I don't know who decided to make where your knees touch as hard as granite while simultaneously making it so narrow. The backseat was nice at least lol. Does anyone in here happen to know if the 2018 on back generation has more room up front?

Reflecting on 48 years of shrinkflation with this tiny bite… remembering epic hauls from the late 70’s, trying to drag a 50 lb pillowcase around the neighborhood up and down hills, failing, wearing a hole in the pillowcase and leaving giant chocolate bars behind, but what can you do before shrinkflation, suck it up kid get a wagon.

To the new kids, sorry big candy bars are expensive.

It's everything and it's getting bad. Coffee used to come 36 oz, then dropped to 30. Last week the grocery store had it on sale so I bought the limit of 4. I noticed there was a new label but looked like the same until I noticed that the new ones are now down to 27 oz.

These parents and kids approached us. Kids got their candy. Mom came bask up asking if we had any Almond Joys for *insert one of their kids costume here*. Unfortunately, we didn’t. I ran next door where they went and told them to give me 20 mins, we will have almond joys. I could tell the kid has special needs or something. Grabbed a full size ones, and a few of the multi packs ones for them. Hopefully they come back.

So, just another perspective on this...

The question isn't whether or not the weapon is safe or what the 'spirit' of the rule is, what it really comes down to is 'dumbing it down for the 'slowest/least compliant' in the room and putting the range (firing line) in a conditioning that can be readily and quickly assessed for being in a 'cold range' state allowing folks to move forward of the firing line safely.

Is a fully clear weapon, lying flat on the bench/ground or perched on it's bi-pod, w/bolt removed or action open, no ammunition in the chamber/magazine removed, etc. etc. a safe weapon??? Yes it is... However, under those circumstances, we have to make sure that all weapons have been physically and visually cleared and also double-checked by the shooter next to you or the RO; this includes action, mag well, breach and as far into the chamber/barrel that one can see... This step is generally missing in the equation on most ranges. Also, what about malfunctions (especially squib rounds) that are not identified by the shooter prior to or as the range goes cold...

These types of situations can be extremely dangerous, and they are often unidentified by a novice shooter.

So, with that being said, the safest way to ensure a 'safe' cold range is to remove all weapons from the firing line and they are either racked, cased or holstered and hands off of guns. We allow magazine manipulation during cold range (loading of the magazine), but not ANY handling of the firearm itself... Even to clean, disassemble, etc... The reason for this is simple... SIMPLICITY!!!!

If any club member is forward of the firing line and looks back during a cold range, he/she should see NO weapon manipulation; if someone parallel to the firing line or rear of the firing line looks around, same thing, they should see NO weapon manipulation AT ALL; if someone has a weapon in hand then it's a problem, and ultimately a violation of the rules... PERIOD!!!

Is this the SAFEST way to operate a range or is this the ONLY way to make a safe weapon?? Absolutely, not!!! However, it keeps things simple for everyone...

Personally, I have zero issue w/someone walking forward of the firing line (during a cold range) w/a loaded and holstered weapon; just keep your hand off of it. I have no issue personally w/someone walking forward of the firing line (during a cold range) w/a slung rifle; but again keep your hand off the weapon...

To answer the cleaning question, please see above.... NO manipulation of weapons during a cold range, so this means no cleaning; not my rules, but they are the range rules :notsure: and therefore they should be abided by regardless of one's personal beliefs or comfort levels.

I think @nobodyintexas 's delivery of his statement wasn't targeted toward the person's methodology of safety, but rather the person's disrespect for the facility, the rules that are in place, and others that are present.

Similarly, we could argue that most roadways, streets, highways, etc. post a speed limit that is 'reasonable' for 99% of the driving population. I may have training, experience and a vehicle capable of operating safely beyond those limits, but that doesn't make it right for me to snub my nose to the rules/laws and just say, 'Fuck it... I'm going to do what I want'.... I may choose to do that, but if someone calls me on it, then I'm in the wrong; similarly if someone violates the rules of a particular range, and they are questioned about it or called on their behavior, then they are simply in the wrong and should correct their behavior immediately.... and it probably wouldn't hurt to just say, 'Crap, my bad!!! Thank you for pointing that out' as they fix their situation or behavior.

    just my .02 cents

So, unfortunately, if someone is forward of the firing line 50 yards out and beyond (and even as close as 25 yards depending on the time of day, angle, etc..) I would argue that person would probably NOT be able to identify that a weapon someone is manipulating is w/o its barrel or bolt. However, what is identifiable from those distances and quite a bit beyond is someone's handling/manipulating of a firearm or exhibiting behavior that is consistent w/manipulating a firearm.

Not all ranges have RSOs on duty at all times...

Our 'range' is a 501c7 Gun Club it is not a 'for profit' business; we have 450-520 paid members each year, plus their guests and a few events here and there. 95%-98% of the time there is no RSO on duty. The 'members' are expected to follow the rules in place, police themselves and each other within reason. We have multiple ranges (archery range, 25-yard pistol range, 50-yard combo range, 500 meter rifle range); there's no way the 'club' could afford to pay for 3 or 4 full time RSOs to staff the range(s) during times the ranges are open to shoot.

We've had these discussions to improve safety and mitigate some of the violations and unfortunately, unless we restrict hours/days of operation to such a small window, there would be no way to afford RSOs w/o upping membership fees to 3x or 4x current prices. So, the next best thing is to hope people police themselves, have enough respect for their fellow 'club member' to follow the rules (which at times may be more intrusive than standard reasonable safety procedures), and when they are challenged by another member for a violation handle it immediately and w/respect for the other person.

The argument about having RSOs on a volunteer basis, so the range is not paying them, doesn't hold either because insurance costs and liability issues are so high these days when it comes to firearms and firearms training. It would be unfair and down right irresponsible for an individual to take on that responsibility w/o an LLC or some other umbrella seperating his business from personal finanaces, proper certification as a RSO and a very steep insurance policy to cover not only himself but the club in the event of something unfortunate happening.
