Removing 1st and second oil pan.

Recently got a 06 4.7 4x4 tundra with a hole in both oil pans. Don’t know if it was internal or external that caused it, but aparrently it happened on the freeway. I want to pull both pans off, potentially replace them if there is no/minimal damage to the crankshaft, bearings, and all the other good stuff in there. I’ve only found two videos on the internet of people doing this. One guy drops the whole front axle and another guy lifts the engine and puts a block of wood on the frame and harmonic balancer. I am just wondering what the best/quickest/easiest way to go about this would be? Whatever the method is, I have the tools,jacks, lifts to do it.

 

Having to pull the pan/pans is very uncommon as they don't leak often, seeing as you have holes it's a bit of a rarity. You may be the one to do it and document your findings.

 

Gonna go ahead & imagine that a rod let loose, even though i've never personally heard of it happening.

 

What happens if you slowly turn it over with a wrench on the crank bolt.

 

I am scared that that is the case. However, I’ve never heard of that as well and these are aircraft engines so I FEEL like it’s unlikely. There’s only 280k on this car.

Bore scope through the hole? See if it looks good before wasting time tearing it apart.

 

I had an 03 Durango V8 (318 I think) work vehicle, en route to a co-worker that needed help, I floored it, it threw a rod punching a hole in block. It sounded horrible but still drove for about 2 miles to my co-worker at about 90mph. Towed back to work from there. 25k miles on it, Dodge put a new long block in it and I had it back in service 1.5 weeks later.

I did this. It was hard to tell but it seemed like nothing was wrong. Couldn’t tell well but nothing immediately jumped out at me when I had the camera inside

 

I had an Audi with an aluminum block...tossed a rod through the block (right where the engine mount was), the engine dropped out, and the rod exited through the hood. I did not try to repair it.

 

While we are here: here’s the v6 I’m about to finish. (Not the one that I started this thread on.) just finished rebuilding the transmission and putting a new torque converter in after transmission blew. (This is a different tundra, will be working on the other tundra later today)

 

This guy just recently pulled the oil pan to replace the oil pump and I'm going to do the same in a couple of years

Having recently replaced my exhaust manifolds and installed headers I can say that when you disconnect the motor mounts, at least on my 2WD, there's plenty of room to jack it up. Me personally I used an engine hoist and will probably do the same for the oil pump. I just wasn't comfortable wedging blocks of wood in there

not sure what the guy in that thread I linked above did but he seemed to get it accomplished in a reasonable period of time. there's also another video of someone doing it on a 4.7 in a 2nd Gen

Here is the holes and the truck. I turned the engine today and nothing happened except for as a certain point in the crank I could hear the piston that was closest to the whole hissing. It sounded like a healthy hissing of a piston with good compression.

 

So what do you guys think? Maybe caused externally and just change the pan?

 

Assume nothing. Compression test and bore scope the cylinders.

 

Pull the pan & show us the carnage.

I see what looks to be the lowest part of a bellhousing and bit of a transmission. And that transmission looks to have some large chunks missing from its housing (and not the pan)?

 

Think the image is looking the other way. Towards the motor and that’s the lower and upper oil pan, right?

 

Yup, you’re right. I must have been holding my phone backwards when i was looking at that pic.

 

Is the hole an innie, or an outtie?
Did something come out of the pan, or did something go into the pan? Should be able to determine between these two by the hole yes?

 

I’m a professional mechanic so here’s my two cents…

one: is the hole entry into the motor or exit from the motor? That’ll tell you if it’s internal

two: borescope into the pan is a good idea, also checking each cylinder for damage is good. If the motor turns over easily you might be fine.

three: I can send you the manual for pulling the pan from our diagnostic/repair manual but at least on the 2007 with the 4.7 it calls for a lot of hours (if you want the manual send me your vin)

four: can you fill the motor up with oil without it all coming out the pan? If so do that and start the motor after you’ve checked everything, yeah it’ll push the oil out but it’ll let you hear for damage

 

I can’t tell if it’s entry or exit. I horoscopes the pan and everything seemed fine with what little I could see from the camera. Motor turned easily, haven’t horoscopes the cylinders through the spark plugs ( I will Wednesday) also on Wednesday I will get you the VIN. Also on Wednesday I will put a bit of oil in and start it. I already got the replacement pan from the wrecking yard. It was an Alaska car with the heat pads and they glued all the gaskets together so I ended up just ripping the whole engine out to get it in a position where I could easy tear off the pan. I don’t want to do all that with my car so the manual will be very much appreciated.

 

I don’t know how to determine entry or exit by the hole.

 

Any bits bent inwards out outwards? Maybe not on the cast section, but on the steel?
