Holy crap! I just caught up on your story and hate that this is what brought you here. Welcome to the forum and I hope this is made right for you. As others have mentioned, I would call corporate and tell them you do not feel safe in the truck. With this many issues repeating, depending on your state, you may be able to lemon it. If they do fix it, I would dump it and move on as quickly as financially possible. I would buy another Tundra, but change the spec some to get a different mental feel on it.

still have the loaner. I’m in Texas and lemon law from what I read is pretty vague. I’ve considered going that route but not really sure tbh.

It isnt easy and I believe it isnt free, but I would reach out and start the process on your side so you know if it is an option or not.

from what I have seen, its usually involving hiring a lawyer, but some will wait until the end for payment from Toyota? I have never had to do it and only read about a handful of successful ones.

The best toyota truck was the gen2 taco 2010-2015
    -decent power
-basic safety features like traction control
    -no crazy beeping safety features
    -fairly priced
-HVAC controls you could use without taking your eyes off the road
-steering wheels with just a few if no buttons
-traditional cruise control, I HATE adaptive!
-reliable AF!!!!!! (I easily went 400k in my 2013 & sold it to 2nd owner)
    -easy to maintain at home
-not too big or small for a midsize category truck

I wish I could have my 2013 taco sr5 back again brand new to start all over
Those were the best 9 yrs of motoring I experienced
I am certain my 2013 tacoma was/is the best auto I've owned/will have ever owned

I do love my gen3 tundra
The looks, room, power, turbo are all sweet
But trusting it long term is tough
    I'd have 112k miles on my gen3
So I wonder how long I'm gonna keep getting away with it....hehehe

I agree with a lot of that. The 2nd Gen was rolled out in 2005, so I'd venture it was in the design phase from 2002-2004, which falls smack dab in that "Golden Years" window I was basically highlighting in my previous post. Your great experience with your 2013 (facelifted and refined version of the 2nd Gen), makes perfect sense given when that truck was originally designed.

I however think the 1st Gen Tacoma is better slightly than the 2nd Gen because it's a non-interference timing belt motor, which saves the headache of timing cover oil leaks that require a full engine teardown to remedy. Also, 1st Gen Tacomas have manual transfer cases vs. the 2nd Gens having a lame 4WD knob

Oh also just so you know every Toyota equipped with adaptive cruise control also has traditional cruise control. That being said I think adaptive cruise control is tremendous

    I'm aware, lol
It's annoying how the adaptive is primary & the traditional is 2ndary...I wish you could switch them around...I never use adaptive

Another update as of this morning. The head is getting replaced and they’re ordering parts for ETA. Advisor stated this is a different issue from the current open engine recall and when they become available locally (Houston), I’ll still be getting engine replacement as well.

Rough story I hope you get swift resolution. You also have reassured me in my decision to regear and keep my 5.7 tundra.

I definitely would not get rid of your 5.7. I’m looking for a low mileage one as we speak.

Sooo dealer called me today as my vehicle was ready for pick up after replacing one of the heads. Wellllll…when they test drove the second head is now throwing a code so they’re going to replace that one as well. They’ve had my truck for about 30 days now so I’m assuming another 30 to order parts and get this going.

comical at this point and if it made financial sense I’d dump this POS

Doesn't it qualify for the lemon law now?! I'd fight it to the end and make Toyota buy it back!!

    Lots of stuff!
Lemon Law seems like the way to go! At least you will get most of your money back. I sent my 22 down the road and lost about 10k but had to go to another brand to get that, if I was dealing with Toyota Canada, I would have lost 25k. Just for reference, mine was Oct 22, so just a month before the 23’s came out and I had only 4,600 miles on it. “Out of the Toyota frying pan and into the GM fire” is my motto? :)

Anyway I hope you get some satisfaction but definitely seek out a lemon law lawyer and at least see what that looks like.

Comical is right...they are swapping heads on an engine that is slated for replacement.

I wonder how this goes from misfire codes to head swap.

Is there some looming issue with valves or valve seats?

It's ugly, at least on Gen 2. Volvo that my wife previously had, accelerated and decelerated smoothly. Toyota almost gives you a head bang when its radar senses a car in front of it. Volvo was able to stop and continue moving on its own, very handy in stop&go traffic. Toyota disengages at like below 20 MPH. I'm not 100% sure, but it senses how far is car behind and applies multistage braking to give the other driver chance to step on his brakes. Toyota does not do anything like that.

But modern Volvo is still piece of shit, so it's gone =)

Advisor said the “valves were scorned” from manufacturing which is why they’re replacing it.

But I agree about just replacing the engine instead. Advisor stated they don’t have any engines ready or the exact remedy yet but when it’s available I have to come BACK in for a new engine. This is just the temp fix.

    Lots of stuff!
Actually I still have it as we work on the deal. I think we will have this all done next week.

I have been taking all my add-ons off and putting back to original condition. I have flooded the local Craigslist with my parts!

I know this situation is crappy and for us in Canada we have no recourse or consumer protection like Lemon Laws etc... The way we got treated by Toyota Canada was the tipping point as we were just waiting this out. They know that we have no options other than to leave.

I have noticed a bunch of 22's pop up on lots and they are greatly reduced further pulling the values down. So we figured why not check out a brand that we haven't had before but have several comparisons from friends and coworkers. So we are rolling the dice on GM. We just made sure the we have an extended warranty on anything we buy.

Toyota really hurt their brand perception with the rollout of the Gen 3. I can't fault you for wanting to move on with another brand. I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming purchase.

I just wouldn't be able to drive one without wondering "when is my turn". And not even just the engine.

Now they are going to re-do them and put new ones that might be total trash too, you won't know for months.

I value my time, above anything besides my wife and kids. All dealers are 40-50 minutes from me. This whole thing is unacceptable, and asking this man to do it 3 God-damned times is 2 times too far. I will admit I am not the most patient person, but if you deal with me in good faith, then I can let a lot go. Toyota is not doing this right now. Across most their models, not just the Tundras. Their sport cars light on fire going over 85 and they deny warranty for it!
