What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

My camry would shift really eratically, I guess the reliance on the speed sensor is different between the two.

 

I am about to try a custom install of a lock box in the center console of the 2002 AC. While checking out the construction of the console, I noticed that the driver side support arm that helps hold the bottom lid appeared to be missing. Here's the passenger side...

...and here's the driver side...

On closer inspection, I saw that the support arm was merely disconnected and had slipped into the lower part of the console. It was easy enough to pull it up and snap it into place. Weird.

EDIT: I see the parts catalog calls these "STOPPER, CONSOLE COMPARTMENT DOOR" with part numbers 58965-16010 for the driver side and 58965-16010 for the passenger side.

 

The 3 American full size trucks are American only in name, tundra has more American made parts than the Americans and the Honda Ridgeline beats them in midsize category. Aside from that, Detroit sucks , San Antonio Texas and there people are just better.

 

It's true, but it doesn't feel true to most people. Made in USA or not, the company is not a US company.

And of course there's no doubt that if you want a work truck with a diesel, you aren't buying a Tundra. Lots of diesels around here.

Yes people still look at it as American company vs Japanese, but it's different nowadays and most large companies are supplied on a global scale. There are significant differences in design philosophy, those differences really should be more important to the consumer vs where the company calls home. At the end of the day, your hard earned money is being spent for a product that serves a purpose in your life. Buying a diesel truck is about purpose not status (most of the time), Ram and Ford dominate that area and GM has struggled to keep pace even though Chevy has a strong customer base. Many truck owners acknowledge the track record of reliability that Toyota has built, but still go out and buy a Ford/GM/Dodge.

yea, it was on the way out before i stopped to close my back glass. Polo had tried standing on the center console, so i wasnt paying attention to the trail while wrangling him back into the back.

 

Not many people, myself included, have really thought this through. What's it mean (to each individual) to be an American Company? Your headquarters is here? Is that enough? Where's the money earned actually invested? Is it more the history? The Detroit origin story and legend? Nostalgia? I don't know.

For me/us, it helps that the hard data just leans so far in Toyota's favor. Reliability, quality, longevity. My Dad drove an 86 pickup when I was growing up. He'd pick us up and drive us the 45 minutes to his house in the open bed of the truck. That's what made me love Toyota. I was probably just lucky he happened to choose a reliable truck. But had he always drove a Chevy? I don't know. I have fond memories of my Grandpa's late-80's full-size Blazer. I think most ranchers, excavation company owners etc I work with just have a history and fondness for Chevy/Ford/Dodge. There's the tradition and nostalgia. Nearly every one of them sell their trucks before they hit 200,000 miles. So most of the conversations we're having on this forum never matter to them. Most any vehicle from the early 2000's on will be fairly trouble free if you treat it halfway decent and get rid of it at 150,000 miles or so.

But the derogatory feeling toward Japanese vehicles is just silly, and I have no interest in arguing with those people.

 

Oddly enough, this whole conversation ties into politics. Orange man wants to increase tariffs on goods entering our country from certain countries, much has been said about how that would increase the cost of things and impact us. The thinking is the tariffs will level the playing field a bit and hopefully make companies consider manufacturing here in the States, thus creating more jobs. Not sure if that will actually work but we may find out.

Funny thing is, Toyota manufacturers the engine for the Tundra/Sequoia here in the US but for the Landcruiser/LX (basically the same engine on paper) they choose to build them in Japan.

Toyota makes diesel trucks. They just aren’t sold here. Somebody else likely will chime in and give a factual explanation, but I think it’s got somethin to do with all the smog compliant nonsense.

When I lived in Japan diesel Hiluxes, Surfs (4Runner) and HiAces were everywhere.

 

Got my Moog inner tie rods from Rockauto and ordered my super skinny v8 629 wrench to go with it.

Still waiting on a cancellation from Fred Anderson Toyota on those OEM outer tie rods. Need them for the weekend so I’ll have to pay $30 more to get them locally.

 

i want a coaster bus so i can get the 4.1l 15b diesel. Might could build a camper out of the leftovers.

sidenote: saw a f800 with damn near 40' of rollback i need. If its early 80's its detroit 8.2 or cat 3208, if its later 80's its a 6.6l or 7.8l inline 6.

 

Yes. There was a guy on a Toyota RV forum who went into depth as to why diesels aren't offered in the States. Originally I think it was because they didn't actually sell very well. They were once offered. But there were many reasons.

I recently saw an FJ40 for sale in Montana. A 1992 FJ40. Was called something different, but it was an FJ40. They still made them, brand new, up to the '90s in Brazil. Other countries had double cab pickups long before the Tacoma body style, which was the first time the US saw them.

The US is a weird market. The US is weird generally. I love this country, but we're pretty dang strange compared to the rest of the world, in both really good and really bad ways.

 

Well I set out to change LBJs and oil this afternoon. Didn’t take long to find the first tie rod end boot was torn, betting the other one is too. Those have 184k miles just like most of the rest of the truck, so I will order new ones. LBJs will just have to wait.

Oil got changed at least.

 

I need tie rod boots as well. Passenger side finally split apart so I have to do those before it starts raining.

Replaced the alternator today after the voltage regulator went out. Went to the junkyard and pulled an oem 150a from a sequoia and also fixed the plug wiring.

 

Debated just changing the boots, but have to assume the truck would benefit from fresh inner tie rod ends in general after this long.

They appeared to be in good shape, couldn't see anything leaky or torn there but good idea to give it a closer look.

 

San Antonio is pretty sweet and underrated.

 

Made in america doesnt give me the warm & fuzzies it used to. Now i can picture some skinny jeans dipshit listening to shitty music instead of the diligent, hard working 9 year old.

 

I'm sure the big three also lobby to keep foreign diesels out.
