Having no sales tax (like here in OR), leaves folks paying taxes based on income and property ownership. So, the folks that don't earn or earn very little, don't pay taxes on goods or property (if they are renting); yet they benefit from the available programs that taxes pay for (to me this is disproportionate)

On the other hand, one of the nice benefits of living in Oregon is that if you are receiving income from the military based on a 'rated' disability/retirement, you don't pay tax on that and you are exempt from any property taxes... which I think is pretty awesome!!

Can you imagine what it would be like if we were taxed on the unrealized gain of our retirement accounts (401Ks, 457s, IRAs and Roths), our stocks and other investment holdings, similar to our property taxes...

Relieving us of income or property tax and adding taxes to purchases is really a VAT tax. It doesn't just happen at the end consumer, it happens all along the way from raw materials to end sale. And goods and services prices suffer greatly because of it (not that they don't now with corporate income taxes and/or tariffs). Proposals at the Texas state level and I'm sure at the federal level in the past have included graduated taxation based on income, so it will still be lopsided. I think it's better than an income tax. If they could reign in property taxes back to sanity, I'd be neutral on property vs. VAT.
