On the fence, and interested in my next toyota that will carry me for the next 15-20 years (still using a 2003 tacoma).

I have the opportunity for a 2018 SR5 TDR Offroad Double cab: Low kms (40,000kms) for around $49K (CAD) or a new 2024 SR5 TRD Offroad Crewmax for $61,500 (CAD). This purchase is in Canada. Do I go with proven reliability, or roll the dice (all the issues discussed on this forum) on 3rd generation? I live in subarctic climate and plan on modifying with suspension lift and tires/wheels.

The correct answer is: neither will "carry you" for the next 15-20 years.

I think you need to test both and just make your own decision.

this is just going to cause a shit storm of opinions here and I don't think you'll get a decisive recommendation one way or the other.

gen 3 dudes will tell you get the 2024

2021 and earlier dudes will say no way, get the older one

and around and around we go. You can also use the search function as there is a shitload of specualtion and arguments or both gens here already

    there, thread locked, lol.

good luck in your decision though and hope whatever you get serves you well, after all toyota trucks are usually great.

Hard to answer the reliability question. You have to way that with what Toyota has always done. I had a 2nd gen for 11 years before trading in on the 3rd gen this year. Bottom line you can't beat the comfort, ride, tech, engine, and overall specs on the 3rd gen. It really is not a comparison. How long will it last, hopefully as long as my 2nd gen. I just can't wrap my arms around spending $40,000 plus for an older truck without all the specs. One bit of caution with the lift. Toyota is a little tight with the warranty on the lift. I am waiting to put my lift on, until I get a little closer to the end of the warranty. If you do put it on when you purchase, make sure it is a place that knows what the hell they are doing. Got some horror stories on lifts and voiding the warranty on the new rigs. Also, don't listen to everything on social media. Talk to people who own 3rd gens and ask them what they think. In person! Not on social media. I question if some people of even own what they talk about.

If you do go with the second gen, 2018 is the year to get.

Volvo currently has no engine replacement recall for two model years, you better get a Volvo, ya know? They have subarctic climate in Sweden, too.
