Bed step on ‘22+

Follow the link to the “my bed step mounts differently” thread I put a link to. It is posted there with pics of today’s installation.

 

I made an online order for 4 oil filters and went by the dealer to pick them up today. I also mentioned that I had an order in with them from last week for a bed step. He laughed and said don't hold your breath. They have had another one on order since October and are still waiting.

 

3500 is a lot of back orders.

 

And I am either at or close to the end of that line. :-(

 

I just installed the Dngbmyx bed step from Amazon and it works great! When folded up, it’s about 1/8” away from the bumper.

 

I installed the same Amazon bed step last night. Works perfectly. Honestly, if I didn't know where it came from, I would have thought it was an OEM part.

 

I’m late to the thread but hoping for some advice on my OEM bed step. I installed it months ago and it’s been crooked from the beginning. I followed all instructions and the step is very firmly installed and stable, so I do not understand why this mounts this way. I saw an SR5 recently with a step that was mounted correctly. I would be grateful for your guidance. Thank you!

 

That’s the way mine is also, I think it’s supposed to be like that. Folds down and is level and plumb. Do you have a pic of the one you saw?

 

Mine too. I think that's just how they are.

Goofy looking but it works ok.

 

FYI, the steps that you see that look more flat and tucked in under the bumper, they are the OEM power steps. My truck was next to one with a power step and I thought my step was fixing to fall off seeing them side by side. That being said, mine looks the same as everyone here as well as the 10 other manual steps that came off the truck when mine arrived.

 

MrKABC yours seems properly aligned to me. Mine is skewed, not properly horizontal when stowed. I’ll get some more pics.

I used all parts as instructed during install. Wondering if I misaligned any positioning. It’s completely stable but can’t be correct this way.

Hmmmmm... I am not sure how the step can be misaligned?




The mounting bracket has fixed holes with no adjustment. I can't see that being bent or warped.

The only thing that you can check IMO would be the screws that mount the plastic "pedal" to the bracket? I think that if those weren't tightened down all of the way that might be a possible reason for a wonky angle. That part of the step installation seems a bit hokey to me.

My mounting bracket looks identical and I tightened that down completely, you're right there's no way that could be the issue (I don't have a shim like some other posts have mentioned). I will check the screws attaching the pedal to the bracket. Much appreciated!

 

Mine came on the truck. (2023)It looks bent as well when it’s up. I looked at mine and it may be possible to shim the mounting bolts so it looks better going down the hi way but will likely have a little lean when you step on it.
It’s a shame you have to fix things on a new truck.

Yup, sometimes Amazon can bite you in the butt. As the saying goes if it looks too good to be true it probably is.

If you now want to consider OEM, I have done a lot of research on best prices. The best price I have found so far for almost all Toyota Tundra accessories is from Boch Toyota South out of North Attleboro, MA. They even have better prices than Sparks Toyota from Myrtle Beach and Sparks will not even price match them. Boch also has cheaper shipping cost too by at least 25%. I even checked Sparks FREESHIP Promo but in the end what they do is increase prices of the parts to cover that that Promo. I would have ordered all my accessories from Boch Toyota South but they don't accept Canadian issued VISA credit cards while Sparks does. For you US buyers check Boch out.

I put the OEM on my '22 Tundra and I still think it's useless. It only gains you about 6" from the ground.
Is there a way to adjust this thing that can get it higher off the ground when it's in use?
I liked the Chevy bumper with the built in cutout for a step that's the height of the bumper. That's about the only thing I liked better about the Chevy.
Well that and my driver seat never cracked on the cheaply made Chevy....

 

I have one from Amazon. I'm 165lbs. Works great for me. Super happy with it.

 

I decided to just bungee a little stool in the bed. I can take it out. Move it around.

Having owned a 2013 F-150 with the tailgate step that pulls out from inside the tailgate I can say Ford and Chevy are way ahead of Toyota in this area. I'm sure Toyota will do some sort of tailgate step in the not to distant future.

 

I had exactly the same thought. It definitely would be better if it were at least a few inches higher. Climbing into the bed while carrying anything is awkward due to the lowness of the step. And while I am not as spry as I used to be I am not vertically challenged. I may make something to lay on it when I need to use the step. Maybe wood or a 3D print. Not sure yet.

 

That sounds good. Let me know what you come up with. iforceAZ bungees a stool in the bed. I will do that too, but prefer not to have to have something extra in the bed that has to be moved every time I use the bed.

 

I was able to get an open box Amp Research bed step for the 3rd gen Tundra for $100 off, and i was pleasantly surprised when it arrived without a scratch on it. I'll be installing it this week but here's some pertinent info:

The Amp aftermarket branded step is definitely different than the OEM in its structural makeup but has an identical looking step. I would say at the current price differential (approx $250 for OEM, and $330 for Amp Research), the OEM is absolutely the no-brainer option. Like I mentioned, the only reason I went with Amp is i got a steep discount.

- Like the other steps, the Amp step arrives disassembled. On prior trucks I owned, the AMP step arrived fully assembled and all I had to do was bolt on.

-This one is more challenging because the upper housing that mounts to the receiver hitch comes in two pieces that bolt together rather than the OEM design single solid piece. The problem with that is when that housing is assembled, you then connect the arm assembly to it with two 15mm bolts, but theyre quite challenging to properly access and torque, so make sure you have tools designed for tight spaces and ratcheting wrenches etc.

- Attaches in same place as the OEM step, so youll also need to remove that bumper support (10mm on top, and a plastic push connector on bottom) to get enough room to install the upper bolt.

I'll post photos this week once its on.

I think Amp Research should be called out for pricing this step so high. It needs to sell for well under $250, and really probably under $200, given that the OEM housing is better constructed and this aftermarket Amp version is very likely much cheaper to manufacture.

 

Here are the photos from the Amp Research Bed Step install. You I can see how the housing is different. There's also one additional small bracket that gets added on for stability that you can see in photos #7 and #8. Some of these photos are taken before tightening/torquing the bolts.

The other thing I've noticed is this step doesn't sit up as close to the bumper as the OEM when stowed. There appears to be a much larger gap, maybe close to 1 inch at the closest part.

It's so odd that the new gen Tundra's don't have a built in step in the tail gate or anything built in compared to all the other major brands.
