After looking at several trucks and doing a fair amount of research I’m ready to move out of my beloved 2017 Tacoma DCSB and into a 3rd gen Tundra. Long story short: 2 car seats and a taco don’t mix. I’m going to look at a truck today and if it all checks out I’m gonna buy it. I think it’s a good deal based on what I’ve seen on the market but wanted to get a few opinions from the pros here. Here are the details:

    2023 Tundra Limited 4x4
    25k miles
Non hybrid, not currently under recall
    TRD OffRoad Package
    JBL audio
    Limited premium package
    Limited power package
    Panoramic moon roof
    TRD skid plate
    Heated steering wheel
Bed liner, running boards, some other odds and ends Toyota accessories
Fas-Top Tonneau cover that also converts to soft camper top.

    local owner with maintenance records.
    Price: $48,500

this appears to be a good price based on what I’ve seen listed online. It is however very hard to find TRD off road limited trucks for me to compare it to. But i would think the off road package would be more expensive than the standard limiteds I’m seeing everywhere.

The truck is 15 months old and has 25k miles on it. I don’t put many miles on my 17 Tacoma (just hit 30k miles) and my thinking is I will still have 20+ months of factory warranty with this truck and even if I end up somehow hating it and sell it after a few years the mileage will be more balanced or even considered low mileage by that time.

i will not use the off road package for what it’s meant for but I’ve read a lot of rave reviews about improved on road driving from the bilsteins and I do love the black 20” wheels and like the off road grill. That said, since it is not needed at all, I would be perfectly happy in a regular limited if i thought it would save me money, but i don’t think it will.

So what’s the verdict? Is 48500 for what I’m looking at a good price? Please ease my mind. I already have the Tacoma under agreement of sale for 31,500, which is only 4,500 less than I bought it for 8 years ago. I don’t like spending money on myself, but think this would be a great family vehicle for me for the next 8-10 years.

i will add that I did look into buying new but I can’t justify the premium. I think the engine recall has knocked the wind out of the Tundra resale market temporarily. If I go and build this exact truck (2025my) on Toyota and add the accessories and topper I get to 71k.

Ha, I’m ALMOST there. This is the part of the ceremony where the priest says ‘Speak now or forever hold your peace.’ And I’m hoping I can get a few people who are more familiar with these trucks to confirm what I’m thinking or tell me run!

Well, nobody here with a 3rd gen tundra is going to tell you not to get one. The only ones who might will be the V8 lovers, like myself, who don't care for small displacement forced induction engines. As long as you are aware of and okay with the engine recall and the other more common complaints (seat panels cracking, wind noise, trim failures, etc.) then you're not going to find any major pushback here.

Thanks. Well aware of the recall. Also well aware of the previous-gen-bias that thrives on forums. Heard the same chatter nonstop about the ‘new and unreliable 3rd gen Tacos’ when I bought my Tacoma in 2017. Now half of those people own a 3rd gen Taco and are bashing the new 4th gens. I test drove 2 2021 Tundras and decided i did not want to buy a truck that felt 10 years older than my Tacoma. Not really interested in having that debate. I Was just hoping someone with a 3rd gen Tundra who was recently in my shoes could chime in on the price of my potential future truck.

They definitely will be along, I'm sure. It's just kinda late/early right now. Most 3rd genners that are still here love them.

If everything on the truck checks out, I think so. Good luck today! Toppers aren't cheap, I want one for my truck too but can't justify the cost.

Seems like a decent price for a 23 Limited Off Roader with nice features…. I found an ‘24 Limited Off roader without the JBL/Moon roof non hybrid & it was not easy to locate. Enjoy it!

As posted above, yes I don't think you'll regret your decision.
Did you ask as to why it was traded in,or what the status is?
The non hybrid version does have an active recall for the engine, and ask if the fuel line (evap side) has been remedied or have them do it before you drive it off the lot.
As you have gone on several trial runs you'll be happy with the power and size compared the taco, so with all of the extra room for the lil ones you should have miles and smiles with it.

Congrats and all the best man:cheers:

It’s from a private seller. The only complication is it is still financed through Toyota so we will be using a 3rd party service - likely Autotrader Private Exchange or Caramel - that works as an escrow to hold my money and transfer the title and truck. Its to make sure he doesn’t steal my money and keep the truck and I don’t scam him and steal the truck.

Because the truck is so new and still under warranty do you guys think I need a pre purchase inspection?

My ‘24 limited TRDOR has been nice in the 5 months I’ve owned it.
I’m just leery to buy used though, especially with all the natural disasters, floods, hurricanes, fires.
Make sure you check for water damage.
Yes, I’d have a mechanic inspect it.
@GODZILLA - What engine did you go with in your Ferd f150?

New doesn't mean he didn't eff it up. I'd inspect it before buying it.

You will love the Tundra, I recently switched over from Ford, & i like the 3rd gen Tundra way more than I thought I would so far. Haven't towed anything yet, but I'm happy with it so far.
If that Tundra checks all the boxes for you, then get it & enjoy. Don't forget to post pics, & good luck.

    Exactly what he said ^^^^^^^.
Don't be so quick to grab the reins, as much as you want the truck/need it, definitely have it inspected. As you already know, once you leave the Stealership lot anything that goes wrong with it they "will say" it's from you mis treating it.

Being optimistic I'm sure it's all good but unfortunately in today's new environment you need to be your own proactive advocate.

    Cheers man!

Went to look at the truck today and I was super pleased. Seller was great. Great condition, great looking truck. Pre sale inspection tomorrow and then buying it later this week. Thanks everyone for the input!

Congrats man, sounds like you got a decent deal!
    Hopefully your PPI goes well.
Still have the stock Falken Mildpeaks on there? Probably budget for some fresh skins right off the bat.
Beautiful truck. Optioned out very similar to my '24. You're gonna love it.
