I was talking about aftermarket Moogs now and other aftermarket makers.

 

Gorilla duct tape should fix that. Maybe. Probably. Oh, hell I don’t know.

 

Think I’m going with the aftermarket $20 Moog inner tie rods. OEM @ $178/each with 25% off isn’t even close and it makes more sense to just buy a new steering rack while I’m at it. Just hope they last at least a few years at such a low price.

Someone else posted up a person doing the rears recently and they used a similar trick. I’ve see a lot of shit in my time, as I know you have. I had never seen anyone do that before.

 

I've been looking at various front bumper options and have come across some laughable stuff. Here's a ridiculous photo shop fail

 

Anyone here know if I can potentially damage my steering rack by taking a cheater pipe to an oversized adjustable wrench to get the outer tie rod nut off?

I’m not sure how sturdy the rack is if I’m twisting against it with the inner tie rod turning 1/8-1/4 turn in an attempt to break that nut free. Those alignment bastards always crank it on too hard.

I know I won’t be able to hold the outer tie rod in place with another wrench if I try to use a cheater. I figured the outer tie rod joint should stop me by 1/4 turn at the expense of that tie rod which I’m replacing.

I’d like to at least give it a shot before I just unscrew the inner and outer tie rod together.

Suggestions? Yay or nay?

 

There's a flat on the OEM OTR and also the ITR to keep it from twisting the rack. I've got the measurements somewhere...

Oh, yeah I forgot about that. Got to pull back the boot and take a look. Hopefully it’s accessible with the boot still on it and pushed to the side.

 

I take it you’ve dealt with that on our Tundras before?

 

I used a big pipe wrench and a cheater pipe. My rack doesn’t leak more than it did before, so I’m thinking it’s fine.

 

Those big brush guards are great for smaller impacts, but a large hit transfers all of the kinetic energy straight to the frame. I have seen a few trucks that ended up totalling out because of this. The vehicle is designed to absorb energy and move it around certain crush zones while brush guards circumvent the crush zones by bolting directly to the frame, in most cases. This can also end up causing injuries in the event of an accident. The law of unintended consequences.

Most of the torque is a twisting motion, the inners twist freely in their ball socket. The remaining load isn't enough to harm the inners, at least that I've found.

 

Well work shituation got the best of me. Merus staff left at 5:30 so not able to hit the road and join the tx boys tonight. Not sure if it’s worth having to come back on Sunday early in the morning. 5.5 hours each way without stops.

Supplier delivered wrong material at 10am. Correct ones weren’t on site until 3ish. I had 11 guys and they would have finished before 3 if the supplier didn’t goof it up.

 

I swear the incompetence level out there now (people in jobs they have no right to be in) is insane.
If you don't hold their effin hands through everything.. and know MORE than them about about details of a product or process.... shit gets sideways.
I think a HUGE brain drain happened when a ton of older (Knowledgeable/experienced) people who could retire, but were still working, just pumped and dumped out of the workforce because of covid.

Sadly there isn’t a lot of option these days. Opting for a warm seat versus an empty one. Even if they piss off the other staff and all your customers with their incompetence.

And that’s not to blame the incompetent. This is a failure of their parents and senior staff (now retiring) failing to do the “Three Ts”: teach, train, transfer.

Older folks find it funny as hell to joke about how tour average employee “doesn’t want to work”. Sad truth is, wages are shit and completely divorced from the value of the dollar as it was when I was in high school 30-40 years ago, it hasn’t tracked with inflation in decades to the point a minimum wage job can’t afford you a minimum sized apartment and minimal amount of food to eat, much less a car and gas + insurance for it unless you find 2-3 trustworthy people and cohabitate. Someone show me the motivation for Gen Y and beyond to do beyond the bare minimum…

You’ll start seeing the impacts soon, as Gen Y and all to follow won’t have children, birth rates will drop, and along with the loss of knowledge you’ll see a loss of citizens to go with it. You know what sucks about that more than the domestic population decline? A rise in selfishness that goes along with fewer parents. Childbearing is a humbling experience, and if you can’t manage to adapt and become more selfless, it typically goes to shit, your kids either detach or end up f’ed up. Last thing we need is more selfishness on the planet. Quite the opposite, actually. Would be massive changes in no time flat if more people actually gave a shit about their fellow human. But that’s not where the most vocal on the planet are trying to steer us right now.
