Apples and oranges, my friend . There are repairable issues and then there are sudden catastrophic failures with the potential to total and out of warranty vehicle. I think that had to be one of the factors discussed internally at Toyota. With potential class action suit based on how expensive these motors are to replace.

You’re not wrong though that this is solely Toyota, I have not read in-depth, but Ford appears to be experiencing some sudden catastrophic failures with latest iteration of small eco-boost.

You’re welcome. I can see you have difficulty using a common sense filter or taking a hint.

I’m going with glass 2/5 full At this point. If Toyota put it in writing and with reasonable timeline commitments, I think this will be glass 4/5 full. If they were to give us the V8 diesel, my cup runneth over

I was in India some years back being driven around in a diesel Toyota van. It was a pretty good ride overall, I have wondered since then why they woudn't bring a diesel to the US. Probably emissions and demand related really.

I bet we find out eventually. As someone rightfully pointed out, this isn’t the skunk works, Despite the best efforts of their attorneys, they are approving to be a leaky ship.

This was part of car care nuts appraisal. Also, what my independent toy mechanic said broadly of engines today. Mission standards are pushing the tuning and technology. Modern small displacement, twin turbo engines running at higher RPM, Much higher stresses and temps . That all Require excellent machining and perfect maintenance to do what they do reliably. Cannot say the same for old reliable detuned, big displacement v-8’s. Thanks a lot California.

The trucks that failed with 28 miles on them weren’t broken due to being worn out early… something other than fatigue stress was causing bearings to spin.

100% emissions related, mostly driven by California. We can also think California for the ever shrinking fuel tank too. Manufactures are being pushed to the bleeding edge to eak out every last 1/100th percent of efficiency to access the US market and consumer needs be damned.

In other non us markets, you can literally still get a 39 gallon diesel tank from the Toyota factory. Pair that with a Highly Efficient V8 diesel you can cross continents. Is it any wonder the rest of the world doesn’t wanna buy a pavement princess truck from one of the big three? You’ll need to go to DOD to find a class leading American made off-road utility vehicle these days.

In CA’s infinite wisdom they are planning to outlaw Every single internal combustion engine within the next decade. To literally include propane forklifts. They are 100% serious. They started with the landscapers and are coming for us next.[/QUOTE]

If I can interject one more speculation, Toyota might just not want 99(ish)% of recalled engines that might still be perfectly good flooding the market? Can you imagine what that’ll do to the price of parts and engines moving forward?

I am not the one that mentioned a particular state and the offensive term mouth breather in the same sentence.

There is no alternate universe in which your original post would not be taken as an insult to Alabama. If you did not intend it as an insult you would have worded it differently.

So you ATA who insults people and then doubles down insulting the person who calls you out like you are the victim.

    Trill on.

Exactly. Same reason they’re sticking four bangers in all the new Tacos, 4Runners and Land Cruisers.

Probably depends on who's performing the replacement. But comments from techs on different social media sites state the motor can be pulled out up through the hood.

Tech I talked to and the images floating around the interwebs show the front end pulled apart (bumber bumber supports, condenser, radiator etc...) but the cab was still on the frame.

Yes and no ... probably a tight fit and possibly of structure dings going in an out. Be interesting how Toyota wants it done if they release methods and procedures for the task. Just my 2 cents.

While yes that’s probably not the whole story, but I can’t just see it being because of what he was sharing from TIS. Anyone can pay for TIS and get access to that info. If it was just because of TIS, I think we’d see a lot more cease and desist letters flying. :notsure: I’d love to see the letter.

Its called progress, plain and simple. The 4-bangerTacoma beats the pants off the V6 in every conceivable way (especially the hybrid) and the TT-V6 in the Tundra is simply a better power plant than the old gas guzzling V8. Its issues had nothing to do with the EPA and everything to do with a faulty manufacturing process that has now been corrected.

No, it’s not just called progress. Most long-time Toyota fans are fans because their vehicles last forever. This is due in no small part to the low stress, inefficient drivetrains they were known for. It used to be enough for Toyota to just sell a pile of Priuses to meet CAFE standards without compromising on the trucks and true body-on-frame SUVs. Not any more. Gone are the low stress, inefficient 4.7, 4.6, 5.7, 4.slow that last longer on average than everyone else’s offerings.

I drive Toyotas for the simple fact that they do not (or at least have not) come with an ongoing relationship with the dealer. I’m 4 years and 70k miles in on my Tundra. I’ve never been back to my dealer a second time. 186k on our LX. Same story. I had a 4Runner and an older Prius that never required any attention whatsoever other than the maintenance I do on my own time in my own driveway.

So, now we get boosted small displacement (read: no longer low stress) engines across the entire fleet. These tend to simply not last as long. On that metric alone—which again is what drew the majority of us to Toyota in the first place—they do not “beat the pants off” the legendary platforms that came before.

Better in every single way except the most important way to the vast majority of Toyota enthusiasts.

I know some of you love your boost, and that’s great.

These hyperbolic “better in every way” posts hook me in every time.

Per the video posted, Toyota specified a hole-drilling and photo process for engines with spun bearings. This sort of ~guarantees by that those bad boys are scrapped forever. Not worth effing with.

if an engine is still running though … a few holes drilled would not prevent the scavenging of other parts. Lots of other parts. So it makes sense to want them shipped back to dispose of rather than have someone else rebuilding things in their garage with the pieces/parts, or worse, selling them. I don’t think Toyota would have any intention of disassembling these to reuse themselves. More trouble than it’s worth. It’s more about safe disposal imo.

IMO progress would be 35% better MPG to offset the added complexity, decreased longevity, and increased repair costs associated with turbo motor. A new motor with added complexity that achieves roughly the same MPG in the real world as the “old tech iron” doesn’t seem like progress at all.
