2005 Tundra 4.7L Rebuild

Hello! I’m a GM mechanic and got roped into working on a Toyota and I’m looking for a little help!

I pulled the motor out of an 05 Tundra with the 4.7L and shipped it out to be rebuilt. I just got it back and week ago and it looks great! One hip-cup tho, I sent it out with the timing belt and water pump still on it. They sent it back with all that stuff in a box. Whoops. I have a timing belt/water pump kit so I’m not too worried about it. There’s just a couple parts I can’t seem to figurewhere they go. The 2 aluminum washers/spacers and the Allen bolt. I’mgonna send this picture to the enginerebuilder also. Thanks in Advance!

I don’t recall seeing any Allen head bolts on my 2000. I’ll tag @shifty` as he may have a better recall than me.

There's allen head bolts on the cam sprockets. Is one missing from there?

 

That socket head cap screw does not look like anything OEM I have seen on these trucks.Maybe VVTI related as i'm only familiar with the early trucks.

Im going with: A. a replacement for a broken fastener/ B. Got packaged by mistake at the machine shop.

Don't recognize the the shims/washers either.

There's a coolant line that attaches to the front of the engine, on the outside of the plastic cam gear covers. It is part rubber coolant hose and partly a steel coolant line. If I remember right, it goes from the thermostat housing down to the oil filter mount. Did you send it in with this part attached? If so, those look like the fasteners that attach it.

No clue about those washers though

 

that socket cap doesnt look like anything i can think of. the aluminum washers might be the seals for the cam gear bolts.

 

I can't help you with your issue, but just had to comment on how great the engine looks!
I hope you post a picture once it is all together.
I love the look of all the aluminum when it is cleaned up.
The 4.7 is a great looking engine and I can't wait to get mine working and driving so I can see how it performs.
Have you had any modifications done on the engine?
Bored, pistons, cams etc...
My hotrod days were all cast iron, carbureted, single cam engines.
When I was a kid I used to dream about those big block, dual OHC racing engines I saw in books and magazines.
I think I am going to enjoy working on my 2000 Tundra for a long time.

I got updates. Not super good updates tho. I got the engine back together and installed. It started right up, I let it run for awhile until the t-stat opened. Ran good. No codes. Went for about a 2-3 mile test drive and pulled back into the shop. Checking things over and noticed an oil leak underneath. And it was getting worse… looks like the front cover AND the rear main are leaking!!! I do not understand.

 

Rear main? That'd be surprising. It's almost never the rear main, unless you did something rear-main related in this process?

You sure it's not the half moon plugs on the back of the heads? You're supposed to FIPG the valley on the half moon, install into the head, flatten the FIPG that seeps up on either side of each half moon, then FIPG your corners by the timing, then reinstall the valve cover, and its gasket flattens out the FIPG in all four spots on each cover (both half moons, both 90º tower corners)

 

That very well could be. I sent this motor out and had it rebuilt, it came back with valve covers already install so I’m not sure what they did. Oil is just pouring out.

 

Ok still looking for some help on this 4.7L. I’m just getting back to working on it. I pulled the intake and the valley was full of oil?? Where could be that coming from? The other picture is the front of the LH head where oil was leaking and a picture of the rear main. Could the valley be filling up and then spilling out the back and front and causing oil to run out? I did notice is doesn’t leak right away, it takes a minute or 2. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!!

 

I would pull pan, check bearings, then oil system routing. Then dry compression test. That would be s lot of oul for bad valve seal install etc. Check lubrication system for clogs and proper routing. Was it smoking out exhaust. Assuming yes.

 

This is a fresh rebuilt engine that I just put in. Started leaking oil after it ran about 20 minutes.

 

Looks like high pcv pressure. Assuming machine shop botch. I could not tell from the one pic , but were you seeing hg leak?

i could not see a head gasket leak but that oil had to be coming from somewhere. The 2 soft plugs in the valley are just coolant, correct? It’s headed back to the machine shop today. I just want to make sure they get it fixed

 

Make sure your rear main seal assemblt O -ring was installed right. I have not had to tear mine down yet, but the two soft plugs should be coolant " cocks" .

Update! Got the Engine back from the machine shop. Looks like they went completely through it again. I got the motor in and it runs Great! I do have one bracket that I can not remember where it goes. Does this look familiar to anyone??

 

Looks almost like one of the AC compressor brackets. Like the one people mess up when doing timing belt.

Glad you got it working! Was it just a repair or were any performance upgrades done? I'd love to add some boost to mine some day so the more information the better.
