Quad fog light set up

I have the brute force bumpers with 4 fog light mounts. What do people do with those? Do you mount 4 amber fogs or an amber and a clear? I'm looking to get the baja design fogs but can't find anything about a 4 pack and I'm curious how to get them all 4 wired together into the factory connection so I can turn them on/off with the factory dash switch. Also do I need to put some kind of LED resistor inline with the lights? Or do the Baja Designs require that? I had an old set of LED pods a long time ago and I had to splice in a little chip so that the LEDs would work correctly with the voltage coming out of the truck I'm assuming. It's been a really long time since I've wired up light pods so I'm not sure if the newer higher-end stuff requires the same as the cheap eBay junk I had back in high school did.

 

I have a set a of clear LED pods connected to the factory fog light harness. Then I have a set yellow fogs (actually they have clear lenses that I covered with yellow Lamin-x film) wired to a separate relay and switch on the dash. Neither required additional resistors to function. I typically only switch on the yellow pods when visibility is bad (dust, fog, snow, etc).

this splitter might be all you'd need though to run 4 fogs from the factory switch.

I'm wondering if I can just get the Baja Designs that have the amber covers and just click them in when I need amber and that way they can all come on with the same switch...I thought about leaving one clear and one amber but I don't know if they would counteract each other or not. I've looked at rigid but I've seen a few videos showing they are more of a spot than a flood. But at nearly 300 per pair I don't want to screw it up. I'll be putting back up lights in the bumper also...so thats 3 pair.

 

Why not have yellow fogs wired to the fog light stalk and then some clear spot lights wired separately?

 

I'm planning to put the arb v2's above the winch so that'll be some good size clear spots. I just am clueless on amber fogs and which ones are most effective. I've seen a lot of variances online and can't decide. I've even looked at diode dynamics and they have dome good looking ones. I may wait till black Friday and see if any deals will be made also.

 

Gotcha. I had BDs on my last truck and was happy with them. I thought their customer service was great, and they had a great product.
With this truck I'm going to try out the Diode Dynamic SS3 Pro because they have a kit for our stock fog lights. I haven't heard a bad thing about them and they are priced similarly. The cutoff and specs seem a little better than BD lights for fogs. If you go that route then I would at least get the pros. They are over twice the output of the sports and just below the max's which doesn't seem to pencil out to me.

 

Yes, the BD Pros put out a lot more light that the Sports, but i feel that the dollar to lumen ratio is a lot better on the Sport version...especially with a street truck. And when i mean street truck, i'm referring to a non race truck. The really old BD Sports (something like 10~12 years ago) version didn't have nearly as much output (i think they were around 22 watts?) as the latest generation of the Sports.

The current BD specs-
Squad Pro- 41.4 watts, 4095 lumens
Squad Sport- 30 watts, 3162 lumens

 

BD used to have awesome Black Friday sales. I used to plan ahead for months to save up my $$$$ an make larger orders. Not so much in the past 4-5 years.

 

I'm not a fan of their click on amber covers. If you do want the BD Pros, keep in mind that they will be too bright to use on a public road, so you'll have to be hyper vigilant in turning them off when racing around twisty back roads after dark. Even their Sport version will probably be too bright for oncoming traffic. You might get away for a short period with a pair of amber wide cornering Sports (that are pointed down really low at the ground, but then you'd be creating a "hot spot" and it will effect you're night vision). A winning combo for a street truck might be one pair of BD amber SAE and another pair of BD clear driving combo Sport (or Pro if you got the extra $$$ to spend)?

 

I’m a big fan of Baja Designs. I run four Squadron Sports in the driving combo on my truck and they have been flawless. I like the idea of running a pair of clears and a pair of ambers on separate switches. Mine are currently on two different switches. For what it’s worth, they are not enough light for my truck currently and I will be upgrading to LP6 or LP9. After caging my truck, it’s now good for pretty much everything in the desert at 55mph, so I need all the light I can get.

 

After looking around I think I may go with the SAE in all four of my bumper fog spots and possibly put a pro on my a-pillar ditch light mounts once I get those. I may even put some that have even higher output up on the roof rack. I'm looking at getting a switch Pro 9100. I just don't know where it would be a good place to mount it. There used to be a guy on the first gen Tundra Forum on Facebook that made a lot of custom brackets and I think he was from Chattanooga Tennessee which was really close to me but I can't remember his name and I don't know if he's on this forum or not. I really just need some ideas on where to mount the switch Pro and if I have to have some custom brackets made then that's fine also. I've seen some people use the sunglass holder overhead as a mounting location but I'm not sure how they got the wires all ran up there.

mint. Where'd you run your switch pro through? I've been holding off till I figured out exactly where was the best place to run it through and how many other things I needed to run through So I didn't have to re waterproof any holes I made.

 

Through the firewall in an existing factory grommet in the footwell by the pedals and then behind the carpet over to the console. It’s not a very large gage wire for the switches. The wires for the unit in the engine bay are very large.

 

Gotcha. I've got all kinds of accessories that I've held off on running through the firewall. I planning to have a 60/40 bench seat reupholstered in leather to match my captains bucket seat and only install the 60 but it'll get rid of my center console so I'm going to either have to fabricate something for the center or cut the existing one down and fiberglass the cut off portion and pain it or something to still give me something to have there. I've been trying to find a mount I saw someone have to put their auxbeam in the above sunglass holder. But a switch pro would be about the same. Got my teq grill in tonight though....baby steps.

 

Keep in mind that if you install the obligatory toyota ditch lights, you're going to get a bunch of light reflection and glare off of your hood. And if you decide to mount them up high on a roof rack, then it will be even worse.

Well I bought some of the 32 led arb v2s in the flood option To put over the winch. That way the flood beam doesn't reflect off anything. I've thought about ditch lights as well as rack lights but if I did those, I'd do spot options to hopefully lessen the beam width. Wonder if anyone makes like a flat black carbon hood or anything for our trucks? Or any kind of lamp shade style aluminum glare guard to keep the glare off the hood might help if I could have something fabricated.

 

Yea there might be a few things here and there that I'll need single switches like that for...but nah. We splurge around here lol

 

I've made some glare guards in the past for my BD S1 lights.
Rattle can flat black paint will help. It will look ghetto though. Carbon fiber would eventually fade out from UV light. It's just the nature of the beast. If you want the look of roof lights, then you have to suck it up and deal with the nuances that come with it. It's your call, but i just want to enlighten you about the glare.

 

From my experience, a spot will still give a decent amount of hood reflection. I'd be inclined to mount a bouquet of lights in and around the front bumper.

I'm having a custom made rack that will attach to my brute force rear bumper and rock sliders and have legs that go up and follow closely the contour of the truck and it will go up and over the camper shell and then follow the roofline closely all the way to nearly the windshield. I have the guy making it so that it's slightly recessed back from being right over the windshield. I may tell him to see if he can bring it back enough to maybe let the roof of the truck create a natural glare guard.

As far as ditch lights, I think that spot is best used for lights actually pointing at the sides of the road. Otherwise yeah bad hood glare. For roof lights you could do something like the LED -colight laser round lights or whatever they're called. A much more focused beam from the reviews I've seen from Landcruiser guys.

 

Yea colight makes some pretty cool patterned lights. I haven't heard of any testimonies to how durable they are. I know they're a little cheaper than a BD or rigid but those pretty much never die so I know I'm buying something that will last with those. I'd be interested to hear from some people who have the colights. Cool patterns for sure.

 

This is what my truck looks like. My 2000 truck has switches similar to yours but I have a rocker switch for my back window and then it's mirrors and then my rollover side curtain airbag.

 

2000 has a fog light switch and a blank in that spot.
