I have gotten a CEL with no code several times now.
In between a couple of these, I have gotten the P0420 and using a Cat Cleaner got rid of it.

    I have a 2022 Hybrid, with 42K miles.
It could be coincidence, but maybe related, to driving it to a good warm up, parking it and coming back after dinner to see it happen a few minutes into the drive after. That happened once or twice.
What could cause a Check Engine Light and not store a code?

There are no performance related symptoms when this happens.
When it happens I do lose cruise control.
Once with a loose gas cap I got an emissions code and lost cruise until it was reset.
But I found the gas cap not tightened properly, so that was explained.

it's too intermittent to spend on dealer time, or mechanic hours.
Do you think a REAL code reader could find something, given there's no code stored with my cheapo one?
    But this is bothersome....

    What do you folks think?

Something similar like this happened to a buddy of mine, but in a ford.
Fueling, distracted, got in truck with fuel cap in hand, put in cup holder, drove away.
Check engine light comes on at same time he wonders why he smells gas, sees cap, stops truck, installs cap, drives away.
    Light still on.
We used my code reader, no code, a day later engine light was off.
We chalked it up to the system grabbing the code, clearing the code, but also not syncing with all the other dozen ECUs.

F150's haven't had gas caps in over 10 years. Must've been an older Ford or a model I never owned. I don't think Ford's have had gas caps on any model for a long time.

My past 4Runner linked the emission system with the balancing of the suspension, such that if the gas cap was not sealed the suspension calibration had to be re-initialized.
So I think it is conceivable that the cruise is dependent on some emission aspect.
You are leading me to consider that my gas cap is not sealing well anymore.
I checked the o-ring and the surfaces for obvious reasons and can't find any.
I like the cheaper solutions, so I may have try a new cap.

I expect you'll need to read the code while the engine check light is lit. I'm surprised there is not a code history, however.

That is one thing I like on my Ford work truck.

Undo the negative on your battery for at a minimum 15 minutes. Then connect it again.

My kids Lexus went thru a similar, original was gas cap related , but a mystery CEL kept popping up, battery work got rid of it
