Tundra From a Lifetime of F150’s

Planning to buy a 2024 Tundra Limited TRD Package, on Tuesday. I have owned three new F150’s , since 2009. First question the Tundra that I’m picking up, has chrome accents, some Tundra that I see have Lunar Rock colour accents, is this a different package? Also coming from Ford, please tell me I won’t be disappointed.

 

To make sure you won't be disappointed, you need to test drive, test drive, test drive and test drive to make sure you love everything.

Oh, and there's a fair chance that 2024s may also be part of the engine recall, so I would wait till 2025s at least to make sure you won't need to deal with engine replacement.

yes, the different trims have wildly varying chrome/dark chrome/color matched bits

 

No way I could buy one now. Waaaay to early...imo let a few 2024 models get 400-500k under the belt then will think about buying one.
That one may need transportation now is understood but choices got to be made.

The entire hybrid thing from Toyota was a joke, this system was joint dev by Ford/Toyota. When they split Ford put lithium batteries and a 7.2kwh converter on board. Toyota did old school nimh with no on board power

 

Ooof, you're in for a treat. My 2018 work truck is an F150 and it's like a punishment being in that thing.

 

Welcome Bluenoser. Switching brands can be daunting to say the least. No one I know builds a perfect vehicle. They all have their ups and downs as to what we expect individually. Best advise is do your research. Maybe have a friend you trust look at the truck objectively with you and tell you what they think. Cool your jets a little and give it a good long thought. Then go with your gut feeling.
Do I like my tundra? Yes. Are there things they did that make me wonder what the hell the engineers where thinking of. Yes. Would I do it again? With the exception of this current engine thing, Yeah. Picked mine up a couple of months before this engine recall. I switched from a Tacoma which was my go to truck to the Tundra because unfortunately the kids are just to cramped in the Tacoma back seat. The wife loves it. The kids like it. We took it on a 2400 mile family trip and it was great. No problems, fair gas mileage, and comfortable. Mine is a Crewmax. If you haven't already you might check out the car care nut on YouTube. He's a former Toyota MDT and has a video on the engine, a walk through of the truck and recently bought a Tundra. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

I had a 2012 F150 that I drove for 10 years. It was as near perfect as a truck could be. Then I traded for a 2022 F150. That thing was a nightmare with multiple new issues that appeared every month or so.
The worst was a drivetrain shudder that the dealer worked for months to fix. Ford opened a case on the truck and followed along as the dealer worked to find the cause of the shudder. The dealer replaced the torque converter and finally determined that the transmission was faulty, but Ford wouldn't allow the dealer to replace it. Ford told me the characteristics my truck was experiencing were considered normal for a modern F150.

Someone else is driving that Ford now and I'm driving a 2024 Tundra. I couldn't be happier with the Tundra. I don't have the technology glitches the Ford had, the drivetrain is smooth as silk, and it drives great. It's an August 2023 build so I'm waiting to see if it is added to the recall. Time will tell, but even with the potential of an engine replacement in the future, it's still a better truck than the Ford.

It's a bit ironic that Ford accepted the drivetrain shudder as normal and wouldn't allow the dealer to replace the transmission while Toyota may at some point replace my engine that might have a hidden problem that could potentially cause a failure.

 

Q3 truck sales the Tundra continues to perk along at 13k a month in a generally flat to slightly negative overall full size market.

Ram is in free fall; appears GMC and Toyota are picking up those buyers.

Rotation to mid size trucks due to price appears not to be really occurring

 

Test drive everything out there and give it some time. If anything, the longer you wait the better prices/deals could be along with interest rates if you are financing. Seems Toyota may still have some bugs to work out on the powertrain of the 3rd gen Tundra but it comes down to how tolerant you are of a potential engine recall/replacement in the future.

Not sure what your use case is but I would consider a 3/4 ton truck as depending on options they are in the same ballpark cost-wise as the current generation of 1/2 tons.

 

shop a 500 mile radius on Autotrader and Cars.com, compare packages nightshade for $300 blacks out trim...you may find a killer deal on a higher trim from a store that wants to sell trucks...Halloween end of month deals will be made

 

I just came from Ford myself, got tired of their nonsense & constant recalls. I loved my truck but I felt it was a time bomb. The Tundra is a wonderful truck, plenty of power, comfort, & it drives like a car. Reliability is what I'm after, definitely not scared of any engine recall after what I've been through with Ford. Good luck on your choice.

 

you will be disappointed on 2 things.

1. Turning Radius
2. Technology

the trade off hopefully is reliability and quality.

I find it to be quite the opposite

 

Toyota tech is behind Ford. Toyota has always been a few steps behind when it comes to tech. Not saying it's awful, for my purposes it's perfectly fine but some buyers like all the latest gizmos and options that the industry offers.

 

more recent is better

once they made some part changes, announced the recall, etc, they should be building engines with a 'fix' in place. If I was looking, I would want something built in the last 3 months or so?

Mine is a May build and I feel pretty good about it, but if it was August, Sept, Oct I would feel even better

 

I drive a 2021 full time AWD BMW X6 that drives itself. I’m not disappointed with my new 24 Tundra Limited TRD 4x4. I had a 2018 AWD RAV 4 and absolutely hated the crappy tech in it

 

And the bait is taken again….

 

22-23 limited didn't have the nightshade trim option. I spent a few hundred blacking out all the chrome.

My advice is if you like the looks, test drive it and get an extended warranty. Then drive and enjoy.

Love my ‘23 with a Dec 2022 build date. If the engine goes then I've got the warranty to fall back on.

 

no interest in driving itself for me but if others like that , cool!

Indeed and even the 'known' worse turning radius is overblown and really hasn't affected anything besides not trying a hairbrained tight u-turn. Instead will safely drive a block further to turn around if need be.

 

Do you not have the 400w inverter?

Whenever I use to talk about my
09 Taco 2.7 4 speed auto acces cab.
Very smooth & crazy reliable...no drama at all. Oil, gas , tires. Could have moved a little faster but that's ok. At the time I was driving 120 round trip miles a day.
I now work 12 miles away or 24 miles a day Wich is the only reason I can afford to drive my 11 Tundra 5.7.

 

Turn radius on my 23 Tundra is miles better than my old 2011 DC Taco.

Yea I’m not sure why people complain about the turn radius so much. Even if it’s a tight uturn just go up on the curb if you have to. At the end of the day it is a truck. I have the crewmax with the 6.5’ bed and I’ve never had an issue with turning around.

 

I haven't really noticed much of a difference with my other tundras in real world driving
