Anyone know about vices?

Anybody know if there is a market for vices?

I recently replaced my 30+ year old work bench that my dad had when I was a lil brat child and with it was this vice that I've used throughout the many years.

I just did a google search for it and it looks to be some sort of vintage item

It's a Morgan Milwaukee 45A with the swivel base. I'm seeing prices in the hundreds.

Here it is...

 

My dad wrecked our 8" Allied vice by trying to push the bearing caps out of his 2011 Escalade drive shaft... cracked the web of the moving jaw.

Called me up as I was leaving work; told me what happened and had the welding leads and NiRod electrodes already laying out.

I can tell you that that cast iron was dirty as fuck and as a result that vice does a tenth of the work that it used to.









Lesson: a decent vice should be cast iron because that material is considered "dead"... it doesn't flex and it doesn't transmit vibration. Just be prepared to scrap it if you break it.

I appreciate the input. I have no knowledge of these possibly amazing relics and was about to include it with the work bench I'm selling that's in the last picture but now I'm thinking of holding onto it. Maybe gonna have to mount it to my new steel work bench.

Yeah, I was thinking of giving it a nice lil paint job especially after seeing this ...


...which is what led me to creating this post. I know that there's certain vintage and rare tools out there like Craftsman has. I'm curious to know what if anything I have here

 

Why would you replace that? They do not make them like that anymore!

 

The bench? Or the vice? The bench, I'm getting rid of because I cracked the wood top along the middle when I removed it to sand it down. I was looking at simply replacing just the wooden top but those could be just as expensive as a whole table.

I came across a pretty good deal on 2 ULINE steel tables so I've got one of those setup in my garage now and the other I'm going to sell along with the old broken wood table on OfferUp and was going to include the vice until I looked into it and saw that they are valuable so I'm definitely going to hold onto it and see about mounting it to my steel bench.

 

@Patch999 may have some advice for you. He has been selling some older items and may have some tips/tricks for you about what it's actually worth and how to sell it to benefit you the most.

 

I've had good luck cleaning up and selling older hand tools. That would be way to heavy for me to try and sell. I'd keep it just because its old and cool.

I did look it up through Ebay's Terapeak. 1 sold (rough shape) in the last 3 years there for $65 with $211.50 shipping (USPS). The shipping is usually the killer and keeps me from listing bigger stuff there. I know FedEx and UPS offer ground rates that are much better but it doesn't look like Ebay would be a good choice to try and get top dollar.

The vise. I didn’t realize that there was a discussion about the bench.

 

The people over on the garage journal forum could probably give you a good baseline for what that's worth.

I acquired, from my late grandfather, a 50's area Wilton vice that is in very good shape. It's worth quite a bit.
