In Montana there is no inspection ever, but cops can ticket you for bald tires etc....never heard of it happening. For vehicle registration on vehicles at least 10 years old, you can get permanent tags. For FGT it's around $250. Then you never have to get any tag or sticker again.. ever.

Arkansas is like this. They got rid of annual inspections, but all the rules still exist. You are now responsible for maintaining your own vehicle to standard. You can be inspected at any time (usually by law enforcement) and must meet the standard. I've not seen anyone have this happen to them, but bald tires and inop lights will still get you a ticket.

Texas is going to no annual inspection in January. I've been telling people that roadside inspections will become a thing and nobody wants to believe me. Traffic police are just another means of revenue generation/taxation.

In my AO, police are basically ignoring license plate, lights being out, and sticker infractions because they don't want to end up using force on the wrong person, then lose their careers when a video of it hits social media. Basically "unless you are dispatched for that problem, pretend you didn't see it." (His words not mine).

Ranking officer with a local department told me that was happening. I've also noticed it first-hand myself and so have others.

What's more, certain states are getting a lot more of the (cough) Newcomers who don't get things registered nor pay car insurance. Read on another forum how collisions with Newcomers without insurance are happening more and more. American car culture is being enriched.

They love pulling over out-of-towners for sticker infractions here now that can just randomly scan your license plate and tell. Seems to happen mostly in the richer towns since they have nothing better to do once they’ve settled their domestic Karen disputes.
