Who is good with them and can/is willing to help me ensure I have a good one?

I need a career change and all the jobs I am looking at require a resume.

I read quite a few resumes and one bit of advice I'll give is you have to catch the readers eye within about 5 seconds. If it does not stand out within the first few seconds of reading, it gets shuffled down.

My wife does mock interviews no less than 5 times per month, and can really prep people for positions.

    - 1 to 1 1/2 page resumé. Unless you have cured cancer, it doesn't need to be longer. In fact, this leaves things open for mistakes. Make sure you have key words and phrases.
    - cover letter
    - references (3-5).
    - Spell check. Amazing tool that people haven't figured out. Truely amazing how ones resume gets round can filed so quickly over punctuation.

    If you get the interview:

Nice see through binder, power color, cover letter/resumé with key words from the job posting. Resumé paper which makes you stand out. Practice interview questions. Have 12-15 different behavioral style questions practiced. Have thought out questions at the end of the interview, make the panel feel like you are interviewing them. At the end, thank the panel and offer to reference your resumé number if they have any additional questions.

I would say don't just list tasks you do at your current/previous jobs.
Highlight stuff that shows you added value to the job.

The thing is just my military career can cover multiple pages and that's just highlighting/skimming the things i have done or responsibilities for the position held. I suck at writing resumes.....horribly bad. so bad a job i was overly qualified for, had all the key words they were looking for, etc.....I wasn't even called....

    Could be the overqualified part.

I don't even look at people that could be my bosses boss applying for a position below me. It happens a lot, and they never stay. Sometimes you need to dumb down a resumé as well.

You want me to offer you a job, better have those minimums. There are usually no less than 400 other applicants. What makes you stand out in a positive way? I have seen most of the negative ways and exactly why I gave you the advice I did.
Sell yourself girl, and let them know why you are their only choice.

Also, another very important thing that it seems like people applying have not figured out. Make sure your social presence is cleaned up. Once a resume is singled out, a scan of social activity (FB, Twitter, etc) typically occurs before any call.

Good. I'll highlight what typically stops me from hiring. Mileage may vary.

    • Short resume (as mentioned above)
    • To the point
    • No crazy fonts. Standard Times Roman is good to go.
    • Make sure your included email address is not something crazy.
    • Research the position and adjust your resume as to how you can excel at that postition
    • Include a cover letter
    • Make sure you supply what the listing requests. i.e. if the listing request a salary requirement then make sure you include it. This is a key indicator that we include to see if the applicant can follow directions. Any resume not including a request automatically gets filed.
    • Follow up after submission in a polite professional manner
    • and once you get an interview, then you move to phase 2

I bet that is true for maybe 5% of applicants or less. However, I'm my experience, it has had 100% failure rate with 5 overqualified new hires. One was as short as 2 weeks, with a long term investment of 4 months.

Seriously thinking of having someone else write my damn resume. Military talk gets me nowhere....and 95% of civilians who read anything military don't understand what it is when it's resume related
