VHT

VHT/clear duplicolor clear showed up finally. Planning on doing it tomorrow as long as the weather permits.
Any recommendations on the number of coats, to sand or not to sand, tape off these lights or those lights, etc...?

Just tail lights, possibly 3rd brake light.

It's just one can of VHT nightshades, black and one can of duplicolor clear coat.

The pictures won't load right know. I don't know why...

 

I found out the hard way that the VHT clearcoat is very unforgiving if you rush it. I thought half day of letting the base coat dry was enough. Nope.

By the way, why are you using VHT clear for tail light?

 

Yeah that's what I've read online. I'm going to take my time for sure.

The VHT is dark, or smoke or whatever the exact shade is, and the duplicolor is clear.
When I started to get info on using the VHT, it was recommended that I spray a light layer of the clear over the light once the dark dries..

I still have some homework to do before I actually spray anything though...
it seems like every article I read, someone has a different opinion on how-to, what to do, what not to do, etc...

 

I did this exact same thing last November with the exact same products you are using.

Coats= No more than 3. More than 3 will probably get you pulled over nad ticketed (I’ve got three coats and have never been bothered by LEO’s but it looks good)

Take your tail lights out of your truck and set them on cardboard or plywood or something & spray them there. Don’t spray them while attached to the truck. Bad news.

Start off of the light say at the top and depress the VHT button. Once product starts coming out then move in a smooth direction covering the entire pass without taking your finger off of the button until you are passed the other end of the light. It took me 3-4 passes before the whole light had a “first” coat.

Let dry. This all depends on temp and humidity. In Las Vegas it was like 15 mins between coats.

Also, I taped off the reverse light portion of the tail light for the first coat so as not to make it 3 coats dark. They came out pretty damn good if I do say so myself.

 

I did it this past weekend actually. Came out SWEET.
Took the light housing off and hung in my garage.
3 coats of VHT, 7 coats of clear. Didn’t tape off the reverse lights though. I’m gonna do the third brake light this weekend.
They looked crazy dark at first but the light shines through super bright still so it shouldn’t be an issue with the po-lice.

Dude, it's easy. Scratch them with a scotch bright, clean them with alcohol then put as many coats as you prefer on of the VHT. Did my tails on my last Taco and they turned out great. Waited over night then cleared them with a whole rattle can of clear split between the two tails the next day.

 

Anybody ever spray that shit on their headlights? Is that even legal?

Do the BHLM and be done with that thought.
