Area was gorgeous. Enjoyed being in that environment. The people were OK. Most in the Garberville area were weed farmers. After they sold their crop, they’d have a couple hundred grand and blow it all like douchebags on hummers and ski trips and crap. Then they were broke and lived like bums until the next crop. The “rules” out there are not my cup of tea either. But if I had to choose SoCal or NorCal, I like NorCal better.

That was one of the cooler hikes we did with the kids.
Hell, if you took the damn ticks out of the equation, I'd love to live in NorCal. I was shocked at the number of ticks we kept running into everywhere. In the yard, on trails, walking down the road, it was outrageous. First time I've had a tick latch on me in a decade or two, AND had DEET slathered on. Fucker locked on in my beard. Caught it within an hour, but still. Bullshit. They really seemed to be all over me and the boy. Very weird. And we didn't hike any differently than wife and the girl.

My dad was a Public Health Officer so we lived all over California. Growing up there was great but after 30 years in the military, moving back was financially unreachable. I can live much better in the South than in the West.

Thoughts on ordering a cheap 12v fridge?

    I'd rather learn that i dont need a $220 fridge than a $850 fridge.

Yep, we didn't get our first tractor until 1948 after one of the plow horses died and for anyone who knows about plow horses it was the furrow horse. So, it was a choice between finding another furrow horse (that would work with the older land horse) or get a tractor. Tractor won out. After the used JD we got refused to start three days in a row it got sent back and replaced with a Farmall. Been red ever since and still am.

I have a cheap one with a Chinese compressor and it's treated me extremely well over the four years; it's been in my truck and plugged in for 99% of the time I've had it. I would recommend getting a second battery if you're going to plug it in for more than a few hours, though. Expect it to draw 40-50 watts when the compressor is running, and around 4 watts on standby.

For perspective, a new 27F AGM will have a reserve capacity of ~195 minutes, meaning you'll have about 81Ah/ 972Wh before the battery reaches 10.5v. 972Wh divided by 45 watts will give you roughly 21.6 hours of continuous compressor usage before the battery drops to 10.5v.

Speaking of refrigerators, I can't believe I watched a 30 minute video on refrigerators and thermoelectric cooling today (at 1.5x speed). Pretty interesting how this guy breaks it down, @Mater you might be interested.

I have one but “different brand” these are not well insulated so they pull a lot of power. Does it work? Absolutely, but I’m considering downsizing to a 35-40L fridge.

That’s a big complaint I hear from most owners, over buy on size because they’re used to ice taking up space. I have a 79qt iceco, and it’s usually packed to the brim, with two normal coolers for drinks and then drinks get rotated in as we consume stuff

I want an iceco, but I got mine SUPER cheap. Sub 200$ so I can’t complain. It’s lasted me a few years, but I’m packed full with food and drinks, but thinking about bringing a smaller cooler just for drinks/snacks

It was a big commitment, real estate wise as well. I have a slide that’s permanently mounted, so it’s made packing and loading for trips different but well worth it!
My favorite thing to do when we go on trail runs, is get ice cream cones or whatever for all the kids that usually end up coming.

    That's crazy. Lucky you.

It was great. Worth the 8 miles of gravel in the rental Corolla. First time doing creek crossings in a sedan. I added some love marks to the front bumper.

Even with a flipped ball the hitch was too low with empty trailer so I ran back home to get the first gen. 226 was the highest I saw trans fluid temp get. Definitely spoiled by the 5.7, but we got it done. Nice being able to monitor trans temps on the head unit

    lol

I got deep into thermoelectricity about 10 years ago. I wanted to develop a cooler where one side of the plate was on the ice side and the other open to the warm air. Could generate electricity to charge your phone, play music etc.

I need to touch up my roof. Honestly the whole truck needs a paint job, so I'm not looking to make the roof look new by any means. I just don't want to see it rust. So I'm thinking I'll grab a can of gloss black spray paint this morning and do three coats, after cleaning off the dust.
I'm interested in yalls advice, but again I'm not trying to make art here. Just want it to look less shitty from 10 feet haha.

This is probably about 10 months after hitting it with a single coat of some flat black I had around the garage.
Maybe I'll grab some black silicone to try and seal all the seems around the windshield. I've got the slightest drip coming in somewhere near the top driver side of the windshield, right by the top of the A-pillar, but about an inch over to the passenger side. Sometimes I see a few droplets on my hands free mic that hangs from the head liner there.

IMO- paint in automotive applications is useless without clearcoat. I'd bet that if you spent $40 on two cans of 2K clear, you'd get results 10x better than just a coat of paint.

    Here's what I'd do:
    • Mask/tape off areas you don't want to paint
    • Spend 10 minutes with a palm sander and 200 grit
    • clean with surface prep (acetone)
    • 2 thin coats of paint, 10 min between each
    • DO NOT apply surface prep before clearcoat, wait 15min
    • 3 good coats of 2K clearcoat, 10 min between each(while wearing respirator)
    • remove tape after 15 minutes
Done. You're going to see the imperfect paint through the clearcoat but it's going to remain shiny for years, it won't look dull after a month like straight rattle can. The paint you buy matters too- I buy everything from Automotive Touchup. A color matched can is like $14, and worth every penny. Trust me.

Examples of all the paint/body work I've done on my truck using that process is linked HERE

It’s got its quirks for sure, but low budget if you have the head unit. I’ve had the app so I switched from the WiFi adapter to the Bluetooth just to be able to do this.
