Welcome from So Cal as well. I’ve been into off roading my whole life. Be warned - you’re about to start lighting your money on fire.

    I got a ‘23 Sequoia w/TRD Off Road Pkg.
I have not done a single mod to it…yet! But ready to light some money on fire getting this to be my dream off-roader and eventually use it for some overlanding.

Considering I don’t know too much, except for some google research, I really want some from real-time experienced people on where I could start with adding mods.

I was thinking of starting off simple with some wheels. My end goal is to get 37’s so would like to consider that when I buy so I don’t have to buy twice.

Should I start with wheels or should i go with a different mod?

Nice truck. I would leave your truck/tires stock for now and consider armor to be your first mod(s). Skid plates and sliders. Not sure how rowdy you plan on getting off-road but a little protection never hurt..

Would a TRD Pro skid plate be sufficient or could you recommend a better alternative?

TRD Pro skid is a start. There's lots to protect under there, and if you're serious about getting into rough stuff, sliders will be a must.

Yup, good skid plates and has nice OEM look. I’d you’re going to get into the heavy rocks then you may want to look into steel options but aluminum definitely does the trick for 95% of trails

Also, it’s usually best to start with minimum and then work your way up. Drive the truck off-road a bit before you say to yourself “well, I think I really need 37”s when 35”s may work just fine. I dove head first into off-roading and bank account took a solid hit. Probably got rid of or optimized 1/3 of my original purchases. Best to see what you need and upgrade deficiencies become apparent.

That’s a great idea. I’m thinking I’ll start with the TRD skid plate to get started. I def won’t be doing anything too rough or extreme in the beginning
Just wana get some starter mods for some simple trails until I’m more experienced
I def plan going harder when the funds give me permission lol

Welcome from SoCal as well. Once it cools down, Anza Borrego/ Ocotillo Wells will be a good place to get your offroad toes wet, and there are plenty of miles of dirt out there your truck will handle just fine in stock form.

Read up on airing down your tires for both comfort and added traction when offroading, and get a quality high output air compressor that stays in your truck. That, and quality skid plates are the two big things I'd recommend to anyone first starting out.

Since you mentioned wheels, when you do eventually buy them later down the line, stay away from anything 20" or larger in diameter.

    Welcome from San Diego.

I agree with @des2mtn, Borrego and Ocotillo have enough trails, washes, and assorted dirt to keep you busy exploring for months.

Everything from very mild to pretty wild.

We like to camp and explore down there quite a bit during desert season.

Since my truck is also the ride home for me, the wife, dogs, and trailer I tend to keep the off roading on the mild side but there's lots to see and plenty of trouble to get into if you're so inclined.

Lots of other cool stuff to see and do too.

When I’m ready to shop for wheels I was planning on getting either a 17” or 18”. I saw set I loved that are 17”x8.5
Would those be good to use with 35’s or 37’s?
I was a bit concerned with the width being 8.5”

8.5" wheels should be fine with 35's and 37's that are 12.5" wide. The tire manufacturer should also list the acceptable wheel width with your desired tires.

FYI, not all 17" wheels will fit over your big brake rotors.

Actually I think most won't. I know some of the Methods will, not sure who else.
