That's the way to do it though; land somewhere safe w/your own TT and wait it out.... everyone's safe and for the most part 'things' can always be replaced.

That's really the whiney little whiskey snob in me; so you do you.

Not cooking, or mixing, with a wine or whiskey you wouldn't drink (straight) is a good rule. Top shelf for me would be something like Eagle Rare or E.H. Taylor. PLEASE OH PLEASE never mix Blanton's or George Stagg with anything other than good company. Several of the Old Forrester labels probably apply. But Woodford, Maker's, Wolcott, Elija Craig - - those are good whiskeys that I'd drink straight or make an Old Fashioned or Manhattan (or Irish-ish coffee) out of.

It's not because of the cost or rarity. It's because the best whiskeys provide you a better experience straight than any mixed drink ever could. At least IMO.

And to answer the other half of your original comment - the other ingredients absolutely matter. Ever had a margarita made with white sugar? I have. Just ew.

I might stop hanging out with you if I knew about this. But more on this later.

Right. My focus was on just throwing cocktails together with what was on hand. But you've obviously gone full tilt in finding the best cocktail and I can appreciate that. And as much as I am a purist when it comes to certain classic cocktail recipes I'm also a guy who loves to make cocktails so I often improvise with what's on hand. And honestly bourbon is a great substitute as far as flavor goes even if it strays from the OG recipe. Just ask your neighbors.

I have the same sentiment. And you'll love and hate this. I run the beverage program at an amazing bourbon bar and we have a really good allocation from BTAC. The ownership group in support of BTAC and Blantons in general requires that I have a Blantons old fashioned on my menu. As much as I hate it, I keep it really simple. Smallest dash of simple syrup, dash peychaud's whisky barrel aged bitters, king cube, orange twist, gently stir. When people ask about the Blantons old fashioned drink I try my best to sell them a pour of Blantons in a glencairn. Or just get the house version made with OF 100 instead.

Plenty of canning jars also live in our cupboards. Can attest that the are great vessels for cocktails.

fortunately no. But we do have every pappy vintage right now. For the price of a shot of the 23yr you could only buy 5 30 racks based on prices you quoted in the merus thread.

Too rich for my blood, plus I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate it. Knowing me, I'd probably prefer a shot of Makers to it anyways.

It's way overrated for the price. Some people really just need to be in a status circle and it's basically marketed to them. When I buy a btl of bourbon I'm a weller antique guy all day. It's not pricey and is a great sipper.

Bourbon will not be included in the test... not because it's not a great substitute or because it's inferior, but rather ALL the recipes for this beverage call for Irish Whiskey; and while all bourbons are whiskeys, no bourbon is an Irish Whiskey.

Bourbon lacks some of the regional elements and geographically based culture that comes w/a fine Irish Whiskey, and therefore in my humble opinion, it should be excluded from the testing (regardless it will be excluded from my testing process :D)...

This is legit funny enough that it could be a new sticker. The Knockoff 'Squatch color collection as silhouette stickers instead of patches. If the outlines can look like they are scribbled in like that, all the better!

I know I bought some, and the big one too, but I may have give those to a buddy. I need to go through the clutter in my game room and see what all I have in the way of TM swag. Need to put something on the Ferd, too.
