The dust is real around here. Between the dust, dog nose prints, and hazed side windows I cant see shit.

I like the idea of overlanding. It seems like a pretty fun hobby if you have a nice area to do it in. Expensive, but fun.

Doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s just camping. Depending on your needs, less is more. Keep it simple. Cooler with food and drink, supplies to prepare the food and somewhere to sleep. Any activities you want to do like bikes or kayaks add to the cost and equipment. All the max trax and molle panels and pop up RTTs and awnings are not necessary to have. A used camper shell and a homemade platform to sleep on will do it.

That is good information. Also areas that don't require 4WD as I am a but a modest 2WD peasant

Camping is cool. Haven't been in years since I went out to southern Utah.

Any of you guys ride motorcycles?

Wishin I had an excuse to get a Ninja 250 or 500. Just can’t justify it.

Yup. You don't need an excuse, just buy it! A Ninja 400 is a great starter bike. I started on a Ninja 650, but crackheads stole it. Got an Aprilia 660 to replace it. It's a very freeing and relaxing time when riding. Highly recommend.

I know. I’ve got a bit of dirt bike experience and used to be big into mountain biking. I know that doesn’t translate much into road riding, but I’m not new to two wheels. It’s very very freeing.

It’s just hard to justify when I already have more vehicles than I need. Especially since I have a dedicated “fun” car.

Plus, the ~$3500 I’d spend on a motorcycle/license/gear would go a long long way towards fixing stuff on the Tundra. Or paying for college.

Use it for college. Then blow the $3,500 to ultimately have some clueless 4-wheeler screw you up for the rest of your life in one way or another.

I've gotten hit enough on road bikes without a motor, and seen way too many friends suffer from the stupidity of your average passenger vehicle driver, I'm too old for that shit.

If you do it, full gear, all the time. No exceptions. Don't be these fucking idiots I see gunning the HOV lane in ATL in flip flops and shorts. You don't need to turn yourself into road sausage.

Buttseks? Or all the crazy flash flooding shit?

Yeah, that's why it would cost so much. All that gear is very easily $1000+, and like you said, very much necessary. I've been hit by a car on my bike four times, thankfully no major injuries. My dad enforced helmet wearing habits as a kid, which I'm very thankful for. He's broken both his legs and one of his arms in collisions with cars. "Those who don't wear helmets don't have brains to protect" he'd always tell me.

My cousin died on his motorcycle in a collision with a car. He was wearing proper gear, but still. There is no way I'm getting on a motorcycle without a helmet, jacket, and gloves minimum. And really the only reason I'm entertaining the thought of a motorcycle is because I want something small, light, and slow. Like 400ccs max. Just for around town and campus, going to work, going to a friend's house. Never on the highway. Not something that's going to kill me if I hit the throttle at the wrong time. Something easy to maneuver.

    Weight reduction, mostly rust.
Pretty sure this was an interceptor (has the spotlights/door trim off for logo), sounded like his timing is off the way it cranked, but when it lit up it was barking like she's hot.

I had read somewheres that the civilian rescuers were told to stand down. It looks, and sounds like that whole state is getting mega fucked from literally every angle

    Naturally, nationally*, and fiscally

There is a lot of misinformation about this for reasons I'm not clear on. Probably because it's election season and people have agendas. Some people without experience have tried to help but the thing is, without search and rescue training, those trying to help might end up needing rescued themselves. The situation there is bad. I've seen a few videos from locals saying that so many people are showing up to "help" that they are creating more issues.

Best thing to do right now is make donations to well vetted organizations.

Dirt bike is as far as I'm willing to go. Street riding is past my risk threshold. I had an electric dirt bike for a while that I would illegally ride on the road and I had two instances where I realized everyone is trying to kill motorcyclists.

My advice, stick to dirt. It's 10x more fun riding trails than roads anyways. This dirt bike has spoiled me so much that I don't even really enjoy off roading in my truck as much.
