They will rebuild. Our coast line is going through this every year it seems down here. Ft Myers beach has no flooded over 3 times in two years. Maybe it’s time to bulldoze the barrier islands and return them to their natural state.

Worst part is that there is supposedly 2 more storms that have the same path as this hurricane. One is coming next weekend and the other one is the weekend after that. Here's the site that shows it. Just hit the play button. Then look next to the play button to the right. It shows the date of where the storm is by hours, up to 384 hours in advance. To me, it all seems strange that now all the storms bring major flooding. Look at what happened in Sarasota recently. People there were complaining about flooding in areas that have never flooded in centuries, apparently. And now Fl wants everyone to carry flood insurance for some reason.

The flooding is a direct result of development.

That is part of it. Here in S.Fla they have the ability to open up flood gates to make room for incoming storm waters. Right now the everglades is to its max point. I have been here too long to know that they dont always do the right thing with the gates and intern we get more water than usual. But hey, let's keep building so they will come. Even our state parks are now up for sale to developers.

Came here to say this. We’ve built civilization in places that are known natural drainages and flood plains. Since we paved over it all, heavy rains result in more water moving much faster, and it overwhelms the poorly designed system put in place to manage it.

We now live in Central Florida for all of those reasons...:annoyed:

Two hurricanes along the Caloosahatchee within 4 years took and turned us upside down...

Rebuilt after Irma with full intention to live my retirement there , then that Jerk Ian decided better....

And sadly our old neighbors in Olga just had another 5' water surge 9 miles miles up River...with Helena...:anonymous:

Supposedly the State is trying and if you drive out near Lake O' through LaBelle , the new retention areas and spillways will redirect to "Mother

Natures" original path ...Time will tell but as I type another 80 homes are replacing an orange grove not 10 minutes from my home :(

Perhaps people in Florida don't shoot at the linemen while they're working to restore power? :monocle:

But you're right. I have nothing good to say about Centerpoint. Lived up north (KS, MO, IN) most of my life and despite the occasional stretches of 7+ days of 100° heat in summers, or multi-days near 0° in winter, snow, ice, naders, hail, never lost power for more than a few hours during the worst weather events. Move to Texas... we know the rest of that story.

Our power grid is built for this. FPL has done a great job rebuilding our systems. Most of our main transmission lines are on hurricane proof poles.

Being from Pinellas and drinking in Johns pass, while living in big bend for these storms have been wild.... Thankfully, our communities have come together and crushed repairing..... I have sent dozens of shirts to people helping in the recovery... insane.
