Interestingly long conversation on coolant change, but I tend to worry more about its ability to not freeze. One bad winter and you could be screwed far worse. I change mine every couple of winters, I've seen the floating balls do silly things with coolant that was only a year or two old. Freeze plugs are not a reliable/viable excuse. I suppose if you live in southern FL or CA you could get away with ignoring it.
No matter how you slice it though it's not worth the trouble of neglecting it just to save a few bucks over years worth of time.

For Volts - DC setting - direct volt on multimeter.
Black tip always goes to ground point and Red on what you are testing unless, like in this instrance I assume we are just making a closed circuit connection. So it doesn't matter.

I now suspect Toyota paid him to avoid bashing the gen3 motor. Replaced 3 head gaskets on gen 2 - > skies are falling. Gen 3 two model years recalled for engine replacement -> nothing to see here, please disperse.

I did as the video suggested and got wavering voltages. Can't reach the coolant in the overflow tank so had to pop the cap. I'll change it at 5 years and should have about 50,000 on the truck.

That usually means a bad ground. can you reach the negative terminal on the battery for ground?
Mine reads .06 on the 4Runner. Its design allows me to reach the overflow coolant.

That video is just the chefs kiss isn’t it?

“Hey gen 2 owners, your motors are bad”

“Hey everybody, here is my beautiful gen 3. Wouldn’t you believe it, still runs like a top after a whopping 1,000 miles, har har har! If the engine ever needs to be replaced, I can just do it myself, so that nullifies the normal concerns of everything else around the engine getting damaged, har har har!”

Don't be jealous that they get a new head gasket from Toyota for free by 40k miles.

    FWIW.

My local Toyota dealer serviced writer told me he has never seen a Tundra 5.7 w a blown HG. But they have seen a bunch of cam tower leaks. I don't use Seafoam for that possible reason.

Mine was bought in 2023, exactly 2 years ago, Feb 2023. I am the 4th owner. Miles at 135k at that time. Was a CPO around 2017. Mostly local dealer serviced, w records. Mine is a 2012 DC 5.7 4x4. Gets off road use a lot. Pine Barrens. No accidents, no rust.

Around 2021 the 3rd owner replaced water pump, t-stat and radiator and rad cap. Dealer repair.

My timing chain tensioner went out after 1st month of purchase. But I believe my local Chevy dealer knew and therefore took $5k off price in 2023. I had it done by my mechanic, for $3900 which also fixed timing cover and valve cover seepage and inlet hose to timing cover leak all fixed, "for free" as result, including belt tensioner w/ seized bolt, using 'oem' parts. I have NO cam tower or valley plate leaks. Was pressure tested around 2023 and a few months ago again around Oct 2024. NO leaks.

Did full coolant flush at dealer, right before all this latest CCN HG video stuff. Because it was 'the right thing to do.'

Coolant level is stable in coolant reservoir since I'm paranoid now. But no hanky panky from the HG or anything else for now. Current mileage is 152k. Feb 2025.

My buddy bought a 2007 used around 2010 with approx 84k miles. Drove it to 500k miles at around 2021. He was on worker's comp for over 10 years LOL.. He drove all up and down the east coast. No major issues. He had a new water pump around 180k miles(?) BUT never changed the coolant otherwise. And never changed his trans fluid. Changed his oil around 10k miles since he put roughly 34k miles per year. So oil changes based on time rather than mileage. Died at 500k miles due to bad engine computer. Rodents? Lightning strike? Not sure. Traded it in and still got $5000 back in 2022.

    https://youtu.be/EDU5CNpCXUE 10:50 in the video.

It seems Car Care Nut posted a new video addressing this. Mentions that the issue he only sees on 07-13, and never seen 14-21. Additionally mentions there were some part changes in the 2014 year for the 3UR.
