Yeah, its pretty much a design flaw in my opinion. I've spoken to RSI about the problem multiples times and they pretty much don't care.

I ended up putting some Gorilla duct tape the D rubber which at least prevents the D rubber from being torn apart more than it already is.

Do you have any pics of how you taped it? I started with gun lube…clearly wasn’t the solution, though it did help for the day. Thought about taping, but wasn’t sure how to do it without the tape rapidly coming off and getting sticky on the tailgate.

That's what I thought at first, I tried the both ends of the adjustment on the lock feet but both did the same. I think I just have some defective locks, I'll be driving down the road and when I go over road drainage diagonally I hear them pop open, it got to the point where I had to remove the lifters so the door would just swing open while driving. I decided to jiggle them from the inside to simulate what body movement would do while driving and I was able to recreate the issue.

    https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/1bgr...4.34.mp4?rlkey=axny7iivo609frvtokvf6vcrl&dl=0

I reached out to RSI support. They had me take picture and a video and they said they're sending me new locks. We'll see if that fixes the issue.

As for the tailgate, yep I have the same issue. I finally got tired of having to put a piece a cardboard between the tailgate and the D rubber every time I had to close the tailgate and trimmed the D rubber down. I don't camp inside the bed so loosing a little bit of seal wasn't a big deal for me. (not that it matters, the I can clearly see the bed contents between the tailgate and the body gap)

I've had my smartcap since end of January and the two latches on the passenger side have started doing it, been adjusting them per their instructions and if anything it has just gotten worse. At this point Ican make them pop open my slamming my palm on the door by the latch.

Waiting on their response but hopefully they'll send me some replacements. To me it seems like there isn't enough engagement at the "sear". My good latches has significant wear on the red coating on the interior latch while the bad ones look brand new there.

Currently I have that door zip tied shut.

Has RSI addressed this yet? I'm considering going with the EVO Sport but want to ensure the doors stay shut!

I jut got the new latches this weekend and installed them. Time will tell. I had the cap for a few months before I started having problems.

@Mike's Custom Toys - do you have a recommendation for cheap universal crossbars that work on a Smartcap Evo Sport (for a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500)?

I'm torn between holding out for the new and improved latches and replacing the ones I currently have (no keys and their 'frozen')..
Also, does anyone know if there's a solution for making the cap a bit longer? The RSI SmartCap isn't very smart looking because it's shorter than the box on my Crewmax.
Someone should make a filler strip of about 1.5" that would make the cap line up with the Tundra box..

Anyone remove plastic bed rails and replace with foam weather stripping all around bottom of smart cap for a better seal? Do you think it would work/be an improvement? Also don’t like the wavy plastic bed rails? Such a pain to get on and off, want to get it right the first time.

I picked this used one up in Minnesota. Needs new latches and a brake light, but not bad for under $1000.
I wish someone would fabricate a filler strip that you could not in between the front panel and the main panel so I could extend the cab 1"-1.5" to make it the same length as the box. It wouldn't take much effort, but it needs to be engineered. Hello SmartCap??

I just purchased the smartcap EVO an and I really like the look and function. I am having the issues with the tailgate being to tight and also the wavy plastic bed rails. I reached out to RSi and waiting to see what they say.

The wavy rails are from the pattern on the underside of the rail caps. I shaved them all off with a multitool to make the underside flat except for the round alignment tabs. Then I put butyl tape on the underside of the cap so it’s sits much flatter on the metal. We’ll see how it holds up.

I have the same issue with the tailgate being difficult to close. Going to do a search to see what others have done.

    Found this:
    https://www.na.rsismartcap.com/uploads/SmartCap-Troubleshooting-Guide.pdf

I torqued everything to specs but I guess I’ll try to loosen the last clamp a little bit.

I spoke to someone at rsi they are sending a new d rubber and an additional spacer with hopes that the tailgate closes better. The bad thing is I have to remove the cap which I am not sure I am willing to do again. May look for some weather stripping even if I get a little water. Besides these issue I really like the cap and how it looks on the tundra.

If your d-rubber isn’t damaged, you could put a jack in the bed and jack the cap up w a 2x4 a few inches to add the spacer. I used a jack today to raise each side of the cap to make some adjustments. That way you don’t have to take the cap all the way off. I put the rubber pad from the clamps on the end of the 2x4 to keep it from scratching the cap.

Hello Skeeter! Hope all is well. Question can you provide additional info as to what clips you off to make the bed cap less wavy? Any photos would be great. I would appreciate any info you can provide so I can do it when I replace the d-rubber. Thanks

    Hi Mamba,

I used the clamps that go with the bed rails but what I did to prevent the waviness was before I put the cap on, I took off the rail caps and shaved down all the high points from the underside except the two round pieces that align the rail cap on the rail. It’s almost like a grid. Made it’s as flat as I could for the most part. Got rid of all the tabs and the “grid” except for the round alignment tabs. Then, I used butyl tape all along the underside of the plastic rail caps to try to help them lay flatter and keep water out. It hasn’t been that long so I don’t know how it will hold up in the long term but happy so far.

    same issue but
RSI is not sending me new locks and giving me the run around. I also have cap zip tied shut. Any tips to work with them? I’ve sent 4 videos so far and the response has been disappointing. Did the replacement locks work? Any issues with the replacements yet? Mine also worked for a few months before popping open on the freeway and not closing.

The Replacement locks seem to be working better. They have only been out a couple months only time will tell. Some of the first ones made have gone over two years without failing so it looks to be just a bad batch.

So far my replacement latches have been working well. I just sent them a couple videos of the latches popping open if I tapped my fist next to them and a video of me with the removed latch in hand and smacking it, making it open.

    I emailed
    support.na@smartcap.com

I hope they get you sorted out.

I have a lead on used RSI EVO Sport that was bought new in 2021. Asking 3500 has crossbars included. I’m wondering if i should jump on this or wait. The lock and tailgate issues have me concerned. Thoughts?

I have a new smartcap adventure on my tundra. I love it. What I do is when I open the tailgate on the truck I use the internal latch openers to open the rear window and then close the tailgate first and then the window. It takes the stress off the seals.

This forum has been dormant for a while it looks like. However, does anyone know what happened to the Smartcap dual lock new style latches? when i order my cap from offroad alliance i also ordered the new style latches. Prior to shipping, a rep from offroad alliance called and said that smartcap called for an immediate recall of all of their latches and they had no idea when they would return. I reached out to smartcap and they had no information either. Does anyone know what happened or if they plan on re-releasing them?

The replacement dual opening latches are going through a redesign with no real ETA on their release.
