Mechanic/technician school

I want to able to work on my own vehicles and I’m wondering what’s the best school/program to attend? I’m using the Army to pay for the school, so which one? Thanks

 

Being close to Charlotte (NASCAR capital) I have heard really good things about Universal Technical Institute here in Charlotte but believe they have more campuses around the country. I think the one here in Charlotte is based all around NASCAR.

 

TA or Gi Bill? Post 911? Which state are you in? School for a career or just your hobby? Toyota has a community college option where you go to school part time and work for the dealer ship part time.

 

Im thinking TA, I haven't touched my gi bill yet, to me that is one of my kid's college already paid for. Interesting to know about the toyota community college option, thats something I would want to do. I am in CA, sadly fort irwin, I am in school already for a bachelors in homeland security but want to learn how to fix cars as a hobby and be certified as good as the techs or better.

 

The Toyota tech program is in Farmington (think New Mexico) and it's a 5 year program tbh. Look local at the trade schools around you if it's just a hobby. I went to the cc in my home town and learned a shit ton then just started diving in to projects.

Im thinking its more of a hobby and will be an actual job if my degree doesn't get me anything after the Army which I doubt (I hope), its good to have options if hard times ever come. If I can't find a job in homeland security, or logistics using my army background then a mechanic/technician will be the way to make ends meet.

 

That may be a bit tough to do on TA. Most dealer sponsored programs hire you as a student and send you to the CC for school then when your done with school and the ojt portion you become a technician for that dealership. I work with a few techs that went to different schools and now are doing something completely different I can ask them what school they did. I know the ford tech was a local Cc program but we have a few others also.
