Hey everyone so my 2011 sequoia was running great no concerns then about a month ago it started stuttering and running like shit. I had it towed into the shop and they eventually found a valve spring had failed. I coughed up the $ and paid for the repair along with a new water pump, timing chain kit, valve cover etc. It came back running great but it died again just under 1000 miles later. The shop called me and said the smaller timing chain in the kit failed.

anyone have any insights into if this would have potentially caused more damage? Being so close to the last issue it had to have been either a defective part or mechanic error? If anyone has any thoughts on this I’d appreciate it. Truck has 200k on it and I’d thought I’d be driving this for a long time but I’m second guessing that now.

Did they not use a Toyota part as the replacement chain? Toyotas and aftermarket replacement parts never play well together. Always use OEM parts in critical applications.

I also dont get the warm and fuzzy feeling for the anti-freeze used or the silicone used. Toyotas silicone is the shit and not expensive, neither is the coolant. Why a mechanic would save a buck is be on me, on such an important part. I could understand a water pump or PS pump, something easy to replace, but internal engine parts, hell no.

Holy crap, $68 for 1 tube of silicone.

A reputable shop should take care of this for you.

A reputable shop wouldn’t have used the parts they did or charge you what they did for them. “Must be the smaller chain in the kit” is a huge red flag. Why would they install it if it didn’t match OEM grade equipment????
