Gotta remember how dealerships work... Everyone thinks that because it's a difficult, complex job they are going to throw it to their best guy who's been around forever.

BUT, that best guy master tech who has been around forever is the guy who gets all the gravy work. He bitches and moans the most when his rack is tied up with jobs like these. He's flat rate, so he's not making money one something like this usually and most assuredly isn't making any if it's clocked as warranty.

Most likely this job went to one of the low/mid level flat rate guys who, again, have no incentive to take their time. All they have to hope for is to get it done and it not come back.

Or it did get sent to the senior guy who then handed it to apprentice he's training who has never done this job before, is fresh out of school and is having to be walked through each step. If is mentor doesn't check the work thoroughly, this is what you get.

Mine had issues after the cam tower job too. I recommend to everyone who makes a big deal of it to just leave it the hell alone and run thicker oil. It’s just asking for trouble and making the issue out to be a bigger deal than it is over a little oil seepage.

I should have let it leak. I’m just waiting to hear back if warranty will cover the new motor. If not I’m going to have to sue the original dealership who ruined it. Such a headache.

Uh yea, I'd totally let my cam tower seep and just clean it up periodically with parts cleaner to avoid that mess.

Dealerships are full of bad techs with some good ones sprinkled in. You really don't have a lot of control on what you are going to end up with.

My 2019 starts to sweat lightly in the corners. Not gonna do anything. Dealer crooks don't touch my vehicles. I can do it myself, but that's too much job for such a minor issue.

Update. Motor is toast due to the mechanic who did the cam tower re seal leaving a camshaft / crankshaft seal tool kit ring inside my engine. They are installing a new motor…

That sucks. Hopefully a replacement engine will be chugging around happily for hundred thousands miles.

I had no issues after getting mine fixed.
It wasn't seeping, it was dripping in the driveway.
Since I plan to keep the truck for another 10 years I had no hesitation about getting it repaired.

They pulled the cat shields and found this.

    Glad they found a cause!

Will be interesting to see what they do since Toyota doesn’t sell long blocks, they will get a short block then have to put the rest together.

They have several companies they source long blocks from that deal direct to dealerships. My understanding is they have to find a motor with like or less miles.

Brutal. I am once again reminded that while many mechanics have more experience than me with Tundras, no one cares about my particular truck as much as I do. This is why I’ve never been back to a dealer for anything. (Well, I also haven’t needed to go back for anything.)

If my 3UR starts to weep at the cam towers, I will leave it alone. I’m running 5W30 at this point anyway.

Lacking experience does not mean you'll make it worse than an experienced mechanic will do. It means you'll spend more time. You have great chances for making it even better than an experienced mechanic will do, because, as you said, only you care sufficiently enough about your truck.

Update: The new motor is ordered. They found a replacement motor with 69,000 miles. Previous motor was at 96,000 miles. Has anyone experienced this before, should i expect them to provide a warranty on the new motor? Any tips for approaching this fuck up with Toyota would be extremely helpful.

If they are a reputable shop, doesn't mean a dealer is reputable, you should get a least 12 months, but I would think your going to get 90 days from the sound of the competence at that place. I would talk to the service manager or dealer principle. Junk yards only give you a few months and that's probably what they will extend to you.

My concern is what was the condition of the vehicle it came out of. Roll overs are not good on engines. Even being rear ended can have issues moving forward. Good luck. I really hope it goes in and you get trouble free miles out of it until it serves your purpose.

Ive asked them to since the entire reason this went south is because they left a tool in my engine on the previous cam tower repair. As far as i see it that's something they should also be covering.
