I’m getting either one as a toy when the tundra is paid off, the tundra will still be an off-road build but also a tower for one of these two. Which one and why? Weight, ground clearance, crawl control worth it?, brake over angle, approach and departure, both have locking diffs(off-road and pro models...better than the tundra there) mkay....which one?

You may find yourself in a world of hurt with a 2016+ Tacoma. Check around on Tacomaworld.

Build you an Offroad rig. Cheaper than either one of those and a shit ton more capable.

Get the 4Runner before they put that terrible 3.5 liter minivan engine in it.

With the addition of the 4Runner you have everything that taco has, but better.
It’s a great problem to have!

4 runner for the win. Totally. Any generation except the 2nd. Had valve cover issues with that 3.0

4runner is likely more reliable and you already have a truck

It wasn't given as a choice, but an older landcruiser would be my 1st choice for a 2nd truck / SUV. They are so capable in every way and just beautiful IMO. But I digress...

If it's a toy I'd get a 08 tacoma. It was a good year and before some safety and electric "upgrades" plus it had the strong, bullet proof 4.0. I'd steer clear of any 3rd gen taco, stick with 2nd gen.

If you want a SUV / toy that can tow I would hands down try find a 4th gen V8 4runner, 09 was the last year. I think it was a 4.7? Had great torque and gas mileage was similar or maybe even better than the V6 version. Plus they just look bad ass.

4Runner and stop building the Tundra, just use it to tow. Put the offraod $$$ towards building the Runner.

Yea, I had a 2011 double cab, it was good but had no balls, reliable but no powa. Ive been following on tacoma world, huge recall on diff problems and the trans issues are like every other make and model, some had it some don't, some love it some have problems, its a risk either way.
Good point, I might get a 4runner then, it makes sense, a pro 4runner would be nice or an off road model and build it to my liking

cool!, that would be nice, id want one to be able to drive on the road in case I have problems with the tower tundra you know what Im sayin?!

hmmm interesting, good to know, thanks

yea, it sounds like from youtube videos and forums that the 4runner is like the taco which is no ballsy gas pedal feeling like the tundra but can't really compare power between a V8 and V6, not fair I guess but Im starting to love the 4runner more

good to know, thanks, either one is better and more maneuverable than the tundra but 4runner is looking more like the obvious choice
yep, 4runner is sounding like the kid in the wagon while the tundra is pulling
Thanks man, great points, you know if toyota didn't stop production on the fj cruiser I would totally buy that, the new ftx4 concept whatever new "fj" toyota is making looks like a mall crawler not even built for off the pavement adventures. I'll take your advice on the older model 4runners, thanks

    yep, noted, thanks manyng

Yea Im gonna stop building the tundra soon as I get my mid-travel kit done, so far got kings all around. Need TC UCA's, maybe deavers and call it quits till i get the toy then build it, thanks.

3rd gen 4runners are fairly inexpensive to buy and maintain. I bought my 99 for 3 grand, and besides needing some scheduled maintenance, and a few little other things, it runs like a top. Ac blows cold, heat works. Interior is even still in pretty good condition.

FYI, most parts stuff, the 4runner likes OEM. ESPECIALLY lower ball joints. If I were you I'd look for a 99-00 3rd gen. Avoid the 01-02......theres something to do with the master cylinder in the brake system that when it goes totally bad, is like 3k to replace. 96-98 doesnt have the center cup holders, but its fairly easy to do the center console swap.

4th Gen's ride nicer, have a larger gas tank, and have the available v8, but are more expensive, and can have the same 4x4 issues as the 1st gen tundra with the transfer case. There's very few power mod's for the v8 (or at least there was when I had mine).

The more I research and watch videos of land cruisers, the more I want one now. I’m leaning more towards that than the 4Runner or taco, thanks for the suggestion.

I suppose I missed the part where the 2gr was a bad motor? Care to elaborate as to why?

As a toy, I wouldn't recommend something off the lot. Just my opinion. The older tacos, 4Runners, and land cruisers are all good options. Out of the box, I think the third gen runners or the same era taco are the best bang for your buck with the Possible factory e locker, 3.4 motor, and cheaper then land cruisers. But if you could afford an fzj80, you COULD have FACTORY front and rear elockers, solid axel up front, the fz fe motor (4.2 strait 6, aka torquy af)

    Depends what you want though.

Depends on how you plan on using this for offroad. Going fast? Going trail crawling/camping?

For camping/crawling, go with the 4 runner, you can pick up an older one, build it how you like it and not worry about it getting abused on the trail.

If you're going for speed, get the Taco, but a pre-2016 model.

The Toyota 3.0L motor had issues. Broken valves, bad head gaskets. Just known as a bad motor.

No that's the 3vz (the 3.4 was the 5vz) the 2gr is the "van motor" that they are bagging on though the redesigned to it when the put it in the 3rd gen tacos made of a 2gr-fks as compared to the 2gr-fe in the sienna, highlander, older rav4s, Avalons, venzas, and camrys.

The fks is now being put in the 18+ of those models listed so TECHNICALLY, the truck motor is being put in the vans, not the other way around.

And the 2gr fe is a bmf in my opinion.

You are not mistaken there. Toyota rushed the development of it due to Nissan releasing their v6 pickups. That's why they even turboed some truck 4cyl motors, to try and boost torque and hp rat wings to compete till the v6 was in full production.

Also, it's not the Toyota 3.0 that is an issue, the 3.0 in the 2nd gen 4Runners sucks (3vz) but the 3.0 in the mid 90s camrys wasn't bad (1mz) and the 3.0 in the mark 4 supras was pretty damn good (2jz)

Though I suppose the mark 3 3.0 Supra motor sucked dick stock as well though (7m)

Yea Im with on I won't get something brand new, if I can find a good deal on a used land cruiser I'm takin it or a 4runner, thanks.
Sofa King cool and badass, I was thinking a good long travel build cuz I currently love going fast in the desert with my tundra(kings front and rear). Isn't long travel a good all around build for any type of offroading, I might be mistaken but won't more wheel travel perform better rock crawling too depending on how high the lift is although I've seen LT builds with no more than maybe a 4" lift. With a good used land cruiser or 4runner I can make it LT and make sure it has good skid plates and sliders.

With a LT build, height isn't the goal, it's a byproduct. Yeah you get more ground clearance, which is nice on occasion, but you get a higher center of gravity which equals less corner speed. But if you're not gonna be racing, that wont be an issue. The main thing is if you plan on going fast in the desert, install a proper rollcage.

Take a look here at what the going price is of some already built prerunners: https://classifieds.race-dezert.com/

Yea, it would be nice to change the scenery a bit and see a highlander offloading and getting some speed

Im not worried about cornering fast hell its a truck but I would love to have a LT toy. holy fawk balls, thanks for that site, I think I'm gonna be on there all day drooling at the already built off road vehicles I like, thanks a bunch
