Car Care Nut head gasket warning

Many people on YT could say what they need to say in 5-10 min. but that's not the point of monetization of videos.

It's crazy that I never heard a single bad thing about CCN until he makes a video with a warning about the V8 and everyone loses their minds.

Just like anything else or any other video, still follow your maintenance schedule and drive your truck.

Actually he is disingenuous with a few videos I have seen of him. When the 3rd gen came out he made a video. Once again he proved to be one of those that wants to make money and also not piss in his Cheerios. Instead of coming out and saying what he really felt, he danced around the concerns of why would Toyota take that route. He didn't want to come straight out and say it's a bad design because once again, money.
It's not about losing your mind, let's face it, if you know engines then you know about maintenance and you take what he says with a grain of salt. But to come out and make a video like this V8 one or like the 3rd gen one, is disingenuous and shows what he really cares about.

 

CCN lost some credibility in my eyes when he said that the idea to bring back the UR V8s was a mistake from longevity prospective, and to instead bring back a “proper V8”? Buy a new v6 much? What other “proper V8” has the proven longevity of the 3UR while still having a desirable amount of power in a modern half ton? If he is alluding to bringing back the 2UZ, let’s be honest and say most modern half ton owners are thirstier for power than what a 282hp 4.7 can provide. It’s pretty clear the 3UR is one of the better gas truck V8s the industry has ever seen, but apparently we aren’t supposed to believe our lying eyes because CCN allegedly had to do head gaskets on a couple of them.

 

Seriously in here. CCN isn’t Jesus. He’s just some mechanic that made a name on YouTube and is now monetizing it. I’m sure he’s a fine mechanic. But this head gasket video is just as ludicrous as the oil change video he made on that Camry. Use some discernment guys.

 

Yeah, watched that video, scared me, I've got the truck booked in for a coolant flush right away here at about 72000 miles. For the cost of the service, its not worth rolling the dice.

 

Has nothing to do with the coolant. CCN is a technician, not engineer nor scientist. Take his interpretation of his observations with a grain of salt. I don't say a technician can't do a proper reasoning, but the guy in this exact video is not the case.

 

He’s probably hoping you’ll book with him. I’m sure his business is profiting from his quasi-fear mongering. Preventative maintenance is always a good idea. Many people wait for something to break and then fix it. I’ve been pretty good at keeping up with the maintenance on my vehicles across the board, and have never had a major component failure of any kind. The AC condenser in my wife’s jeep is the most expensive repair I’ve ever had to pay for at $1100. No motor failures, no trans or gear failures. No alternator or water pump failures. Part luck I’m sure, but definitely a by-product of preventative maintenance. He’s not wrong, but showing a blown head gasket on a 3UR and telling everyone it’s coming for them is pretty extreme.

 

We keep our vehicles for a long time, I figure for the cost of the service, its worth saving headaches down the road. I've never had anything with an all aluminum engine and I know that coolant can really fu...errr, screw up aluminum.

Of course the V8 has problems now, he just bought a TT V6 lol

 

He didn't have to wait for 200,000 miles for many reported problems for the TT-V6.

I'm a little concern I have been shopping for another truck or suv. Leading towards a Tundra or LX570. Owning two non-vvti 2uzfe with 240k and 275K with no engine or trans issues with regular and preventive maintenance. I'm curious who are actually HG issues? Is it a high mileage issue or lack of maintenance?

Nope, I don't need to service it with them; I basically need to ensure I change the oil. LOL

It actually says "Unlimited time/unlimited miles" on the paperwork.

Here we are again talking about fluid change intervals causing a problem.
GM "long life" coolant ate engines for years and as far as I know it still is.
10,000 mile OCIs are causing stuck rings in some vehicles.
Tranny fluid is a hot topic around here.

Everybody wants to buy a car that they NEVER have to do anything to. So the OEMs are playing ball and telling them that they almost NEVER have to change fluids. For most owners it is fine because by the time the engine/car gets to 150,000 miles they are sick of it, it is beat to crap and they have the bug to have new and better.
That does not mean that it is good for the engine/car long term.

Way back in the day there was a couple of rules that you followed if you wanted your car to last forever (back in the day this was to make it go north of 100,000 miles):

1. Change the oil every 3,000 miles - I think that with modern EFI 5,000 may be more appropriate.
2. Chang the trans fluid every 30,000 miles - I think that this is still valid. Maybe more so with the additional gears etc.
3. Never tow in overdrive - Still true IMO
4. Install a transmission cooler if you plan to tow - No comment
5. Change your axle fluid every 30,000 miles - still valid
6. Change your spark plugs every 30,000 miles - Spark plugs have improved but now we leave them in so long that they get stuck (Ford.....)
7. Take your car on at least one 20 plus mile drive every week - This gets all the fluids hot enough to keep the water out. Still valid.

Unless physics have changed, we should probably still operate this way Unless you want to talk failures before 200,000 miles.

 

More maintenance won't hurt anything other than your wallet short term. May save the wallet long term. But yes, much has changed from the old days, and much hasn't. Engines are different. The fluids we use today are different. What's also different is CAFE and how manufacturers address their responsibility. So some of the recommendations don't make sense anymore. Like 0w oil in a turbo application, and recommending it only be changed every 10k miles. Ludicrous. I own no turbos, I don't live in dirty dusty conditions and keep my vehicles well maintained. I've been doing 10k mile synthetic oil changes on all of my vehicles for the last 20 years with zero engine failures. Most have been over 170k miles. My BMW 525 made it to 455k miles before I sold it to a friend and never had an engine issue. My FGT is at 272k miles with zero issues as well.

 

I totally agree that in some cases 10,000 mile OCIs can be just fine. Maybe in most.
I am talking in generalities. If everyone ran by these rules would we be OK......

 

I don't get the whole 10k mile oil change thing at all, especially in all of these newfangled, high stress, turbo, direct injection engines running this 0W skim milk oil. For me, 5K is all I will go, I don't care what the manufacturer says, unless they say lower.

 

Please reference any modern car running the proper synthetic oil and filter 10k oil change analysis.

I’ve been following the threads here and ih8mud. I have a 2017 Tundra with 163,000 miles, a 2008 LX570 with 375,000 miles, and just sold a 2008 Sequoia with 300,000 miles. Now I may need a new head gasket on all of them tomorrow, but for what it’s worth I believe this is one of the best engines made.

 

Wow - and you guys are talking miles not kilometers. Did you do the transmission drain and fills ?
I know that the CCN guy says if you have gone long without changing the transmission fluid don't do it, because the "debris" that has narrowed passages (a very bad thing with the new Tundra) ..is actually a good thing, helps with worn out transmission clutches.

My son's work Sierra 160k Kilometers, was working ok. He took it in for service "a go over" - he said he thinks they changed the tranny fluid.
Transmission took a crapper last week. $5000 later.

 

That's bullshit. Unless it's an 80s transmission. Since early 00s all car/light truck transmissions are "controlled slip", means they consume ATF friction additives. When ATF becomes dull, transmission consumes frictions.

What may have killed it is a drastic change of fluid properties, without resetting valve body's adaptations.
