Riddle me this. My father in law has a 2012 RAV4 like us. We both bought ours new. His burns oil bad and ours doesn't burn any. He's always done like 10k+ oil changes with some fancy oil. We've always done 3-5k.

Yes. Older RAV4s had issues with defective piston rings. You got lucky, your father did not.

 

Emptylord recently said that was more common on the previous Gen than ours with the 2.5L. But I'll take luck any day. I'm not a believer in the 10k mile oil change.

 

You can be the good son and change out his piston rings for him. There should be a TSB for it.

my thought process is this. When the oil company says "can last up to 10k"

I THINK that means at 10k that oil is donezo. It doesn't have the ability to Lubricate the way it did when new. It's basically at it's breaking point.

Changing the oil BEFORE 10k guarantees your oil is at its max efficiency throughout the life of the engine. It also gives you some wiggle room if your unable to change the oil immediately at 5k

Congrats! Man you're in for a treat. Don't expect to remember the next 2-3 years much. It's not as bad if you can survive for days on end with less than 4-5 hours sleep a day.

Only unsolicited advice I'll give:

First, Moms on Call books, and here's why, it's basically the "FSM for babies, Dummy edition". We had such a killer experience with it, we've bought the 0-6 month book for all of our friends when they had their 1st. You don't have to read it end to end. Just use the schedules and room setup advice, the do/don't info. But seriously, worth the whole read. It's also good for those "oh fuck, what do I do when ...?!" moments, good reference info. The only friends who didn't get good use are the ones who waited until 2-3 months in to read it. Everyone who read 1-2 months before arrival benefitted the most.

Second, be prepared to 'team the fuck up' or 'get the fuck out of the way'. You can both retain your sleep and sanity with a Medela pump if you team up. You're feeding every 3-4 hours. That means if one of you puts the kid down after a bottle at 10am, and the other agrees to take the 1am feeding when the baby wakes up, you both can wiggle in a solid 5-6hrs of sleep. Game changer. Shit gets ugly in 48-72 hours of maybe getting 2-2.5hrs sleep at a time. It may work for infants. It doesn't fly with adults. Oh, and change the fucking diapers, dude.

Third, keep eyes peeled for signs of PPD (post-partum depression). It's real. It happens to men and women. My wife didn't have it with either kid. I got diagnose with it on #2, and I didn't even know Dads could get that shit, I thought it was a momma-only thing. Literally, the only way I can describe it to you is, any time he would cry, I had to control the urge to throw the kid out a window. But that's the sign: Irrational behavior, intense mood swings, no motivation, etc. My buddy's wife is still struggling with it now, refuses to accept it's what's up (she shows several flags) and their son is 7-8mos now.

Hopefully none of this scares the hell outta you. Wishing you guys an easy pregnancy, and the healthiest baby possible. It's a wild ride.

 

Synthetic oils today do not breakdown the way the old dino oils do. Synthetic oil itself is made of all similar size molecules, which you can think of as the ball bearings of the fluid compared to dino oil that has a variety of molecule sizes, so it's a better lubricant. Synthetic continues to be effective as a lubricant for much longer. They don't create the varnishing inside your motor like dino does. But they get dirty. Contaminants from the air intake system and products of combustion will discolor and contaminate the oil. If you run in clean conditions on a well tuned engine and do mostly highway cruising, oil could last you 12-15k miles. Most of us are a mix of driving with low dirt conditions and could easily go 10k miles between changes. I've been doing 10k synthetic oil changes on all of my vehicles for over 20 years. Zero engine failures across all brands owned, Ford, GM, Toyota, Jeep, BMW. Most have seen 170k plus miles in our fleet. The BMW went 455k miles before I sold it to a friend, still ran great and never had any engine work done to it. The FGT sits at 272k with no problems. Obviously 5k oil changes allows for less contaminants to build up and is a good strategy, but for most the oil is good for much longer. Benefit of 10k oil changes is obviously less money spent, less time spent, and less contaminated oil being sent back to wherever oil goes when it's "recycled" at the LAPS.

Luckily the wifey has had a very easy pregnancy so far so praying that continues.

 

But if cheap oil has less ability to lubricate when new, the end result is not the same. The feedback loop on oil habits is awful slow.
I run Amzoil signature series full synthetic oil at 10,000 mile intervals. The oil is rated at 25K miles. I use an oversized spin on filter, a Frantz bypass filter that cleans down to one micron and 2 gallons of oil every change. When I drain it at 10,000 miles, it looks as clean as most oils do when you put them in. My truck has 272K miles. It's usually a half quart low when it's time to change.
I drive mostly highway miles.
Less oil changes is less work for me and easy to keep track of. I change at 250K miles, 260K miles, 270K miles etc.
I'm not trying to "save money on oil" as some people do, I'm trying to save money on overhauls.

Alright maybe it really is just done lol. It's newer than both of the ones I have in my vehicles, sounds like you may just have a dud but with no warranty left I don't know what you'd even be able to do with it anyway.

Oh, and sleep when you can, trust me, you aren't gonna sleep good for a while, especially if your wife is on a different schedule than you

Congrats, @khooiii. We just had our sixth a couple of weeks ago and it's stupidly awesome getting to be a parent. Seconding everything everyone says above; it ain't all rainbows, and none of us has any idea what we're actually doing, but we've been doing this for thousands of years as a species and others will happily tell you what worked for them. At least listen to them. Happy y'all are having a little Tundra instead of a Tundro--little girls for a first baby are the best. Boys are great, but let's be honest, we are kind of retarded until we're like 30, so having a girl first really helps if you have other kids later ("do what she's doing" works way better than "don't be like your brother").

 

I'll second that. Girls are easy till they're teenagers. Boys are hard until they're adults.
