No issues... So far! Stillen Cold Air Intake Mass Air Flow Sensor

Everything cleared after I took it out for a drive!

Pretty much went steady for 50, entered on-ramp and rev’d up to about 5k RPM, then held 75mph for about 5 sec.

Everything is smooth now, but I’m probably going to replace the bolts holding the box in place and anti-seize the nuts.

@pvn.beluga Are you running the pedal monster like @Tundra234 is?

@Tundra234 Aside from high performance modes, does the pedal monster have some sort of economy mode that helps with mpg? I haven't done full research on it but I did see that there are modes that you can switch to and from.

 

Eco modes on throttle controllers basically just retard the throttle response.

You're adding a Stillen and doing other things to make the truck more responsive and fun to drive. Accept you are going to lose a little mpg but love driving the truck just sooo much more.

 

Nah, no pedal monster. I just have tow/haul mode on.

On ramp shift points are notably different. Shifting is a lot smoother too. Acceleration is quick, and there doesn’t seem to be a lag with A/C on when I’m hitting the throttle.

I can actually feel more of the pull once I step on it.

Sound is amazing, and IAT is hovering between 2-5 degree from Ambient temps. There’s definitely an improvement there.

Overall though, I’d say this is a solid upgrade to the stage 2. That secondary air ram up in the front, I feel is a game changer. I know most talk about the SABM, but this pulls from the front opposed from the side as the stock.

Glad I was able to keep the TRD intake accelerator though too!!!

Yeah I definitely love the increased performance of the smaller mods (compared to the S/C mod) but I was wondering if those controllers do have a simple way to go eco mode on the fly.

So @Squatting Pigeon kinda had the best example of this for me. He ran his in a sport mode most of the time but when it came to picking up his kid from school, and being stuck in the pick up line, he would drop it to eco so as he inched forward the truck just gently moved forward. Once he got his kid, back to sport mode and away he went!

I got a throttle controller cause I was tired of the truck feeling slow off the line, I now feel my pedal is more connected to how it responds. But, they have tons of mods and you can adjust on the fly (with most throttle controls) but it is recommended to only change modes while stopped or parked.

Question about Tow Haul: I know it gives you that extra boost but that's more of a change to the transmission, right? I recall reading a comment that a member on here drives all the time in Tow Haul but I would imagine it's gotta put some sort of strain on the trans running it all the time, right?

 

Negative- also don’t do the pedal commander get a tune from OTT. Optimizes all these mods, pedal feel, shift points etc

 

I was thinking of the Pedal Monster which seems to be the best choice for most here.

Is OTT "Overland Tailer Tuning"? Never heard of them. I do see there's a retailer about 40min from me. I think if I were to S/C the Tundra I would want a good tune then but for now, maybe just looking at a quick n easy throttle controller.
Definitely something I'll look into for my Taco though, but I'm in the process of an engine rebuild on that so that'll have to wait.

 

Yes, even in NA form the tune is absolutely worth it. Lots running it.

 

For us Californians, a non-CARB approved tune will not allow us to pass a smog check.

 

Yeah, it really sucks. I'm in So Cal but got real lucky with finding a brand new kit just one city over. So I'm going to have to remove it and install the stock box when it comes to smog checks.

Truck sounds much more aggressive now with the Stillen. So many more smiles per gallon!

 

Picked up the accelerator from the Amazon locker this morning.

Used anti-seize on the cover bolts. Went on without even a squeal.

Going to replace both those bolts holding the box down. Costed a pretty penny, but it needed to be special ordered.

 

They can’t tell it’s been tuned. I just had mine tuned a couple months ago. It will pass smog.

 

Finally going to install mine this evening.

 

Make sure you put anti-seize on those bolts…

 

Is your box nice and tight or does it have a little movement at the intake tube that runs to the throttle body?

 

Little movement, once you tighten the cone filter, seems minimal movement.

 

Ok. I do still have to mess with that back bolt. I have it temp installed without the metal sleeve because I couldn't get the thing to line up. Those bolts suck! If you look you can see where those bolts go though into the wheel well. I'm wondering if I can get longer bolts that are fully threaded without a shank and go in from the wheel well and put a nut and washer on the inside.

 

Takes a little time, but what I did was put a zip tie through to figure out where the placement was and sort of just followed the bolt with the zip tie. You actually have to push the box down while you try to get the first 2-3 lines of threads.

I actually am going to take those bolts out again and replace with brand new ones and anti-seize them.

 

Yeah it was definitely a pain in the butt especially since the box teters with the rubber grommets on it.

NA truck and the OTT tune was a massive gamechanger. Made the truck feel so much smoother. Put about 20k miles on since the tune and no issues and still worth the coin.

 

Bringing this one back up since you fools conned me into buying one, it's ordered and should be here soon.

Now, specifically @Tundra234 and others who have the TRD air accelerator, where did you guys land on the install, cut the intake vs the accelerator (which is what I'd prefer, vs a $400 brand new intake) and so on.

Also, 'sealing' that intake port to the fender, preventing hot under hood air to get in, does the accelerator take care of this 100%? Or do I need to add some foam or something?

Lastly, I saw on here someone used some gold tape that looks like it's for lowering thermals, any feedback on that one?
