Hawk pad problems

So I put hawk LTS pads and cryo slotted rotors on the truck about 3 months ago. Huge difference in stopping power and I was real happy with them. A few weeks ago I noticed a constant squeal coming from the front pads that began getting worse. Took the pads off and found a lip on all of the pads that was not contacting the rotors. Has anyone else had this issue? Did I miss something with the install?
I would think the squeal is from this lip rubbing on the side of the rotors.

 

I had a slight lip to my EBC yellow stuff as well. You could possibly try bedding it again?

 

I ran hwk LTS but always kept factory rotors. Felt like they bit harder but didn't wear as good and they definitely made a bigger mess on my wheels than OEM Toyota. I always got 85k off my factory set up so went back to it. One thing I noticed the hawks always squeal on cold start out of driveway but then stopped squealing when warmed up. Could be due to the excessive brake dust they give off. If they're constantly squealing then it could be that lip.

 

Yeah I thought about that. I replaced with OEM for now and so far so good-although definitely a downgrade in stopping. Maybe for the next brake job I’ll give them another go.

 

Honestly hawks for me were good at first but as I said I think the stopping might not have been that great after 50k miles. I do the brake jobs myself and am too busy to pull something off over performance unless it's severe. I ran em until they were super low and just went back to the original Toyota product not aftermarket OEM. The original Toyota always lasts me 85-90k miles

 

Yeah it’s non stop. But you’re right it could be the combo of the pads and the aftermarket rotors. Perhaps they are not completely compatible. That brake dust was a bit annoying as well but I was willing to deal with that for better stopping. I emailed hawk just to see their thoughts.

 

My original rotors warped after 25k miles hence the switch to aftermarket rotors and pads. Figured that new pads would improve things overall.

 

Not sure if Hawk LTS are track pads, but Yellow Stuff are the entry level track pads and ultimately, race pads will squeal as they’re meant to perform in high heat environments.

 

I can't stand the amount of dust the Hawk LTS throw off. Enough to make me want to ditch them for a ceramic pad instead.

 

Did you bed your brake pads when you first purchased the vehicle? The rotors aren’t technically warped, but it’s due to the breakdown or vaporization of brake pad materials that end up sticking onto the rotor. That’s what causes steering vibration when braking and mimics the warped rotor feel.

 

So just if anyone has this issue in the future. Hawk finally got back to me and he said he had never heard of an issue like this with cryo rotors and the hawk pads. He said it could have been that the tolerances were just not compatible on the pads so they are going to send me a new set. I’m going to wait until my current pads wear out to swap them but at least they sent a new set.

 

That is pretty nice of them to send another set. Having that lip is pretty common with aftermarket pads/rotors of any brand or vehicle, I used to see it all the time in the shop. Loose tolerances are all I would chalk it up to. My Hawk LTS pads are pretty quiet and dust free compared to some of their other offerings like the HPS and HP+ models. I am pleased with them as the increased stopping ability is worth it.

 

Have the "lip" on my EBC pads. No squeal, stops fine, plenty of dust..

Sometime ago, I tried the same setup on my f150 and had the same problem. Contacted Hawk they said same thing to, never hear of this but offered to swap. I pulled them off and dropped in trash and put oem rotors and akebono pads on and all was well again. I just slapped a set of oem toyota pads on front of Tundra (more expensive version from Japan) and left the rotors alone, working great too. I stopped playing around with all the aftermarket stuff that is "better than oem" after that. My luck just seemed to never work out.

Yeah I don’t mind the extra dust compared to OEM. I miss the stopping power to be honest so I think I’ll end up doing what coloradotj said and bevel the pads on that edge next time around.

Pad size is same (D1303). Formulation likely changed to comply with lower metal requirements in the friction material.

Most of these the above that I have seen and/or installed have been made in the USA by Advics. The OE pads generally have the best fit and least noise and dust.
