Ah. That's understandable. It is a risk, but there are many things you can do to mitigate them to an extent.

My vote is to skip it then. She'll be a wreck every time you go out and that's not worth it.

My wife gave me the green light for a bike 20 years ago and after about 10 minutes of thought I knew that was the wrong decision. If you cannot back off of a heavy workout when your arm/knee is telling you to stop…you going to listen to that same voice when on a donorcycle?

I know we all have opinions about your first bike. Get a 650. 500 or anything smaller won't be enough for you once you get comfortable. It's like buying a weed whacker when you need a riding lawn mower. Just my .02 cents. Take a motorcycle safety course to decrease the learning curve. Look ahead in all traffic situations. WAY AHEAD. Don't ride in the center of the lane, oil stays there and it's slick, especially when it's wet. Ride on the inside of the lane you're in to stay more visible. Right lane, ride on the left side next to the center line. Left lane, ride on the right side center line. At stop lights keep it in gear and your eyes on the mirrors behind you. Set yourself up with an exit strategy if someone comes in too hot. So don't stop in the middle of the lane. Always on one side of it, right or left. It's amazing how many motorcycle accidents happen because cars just run them over at stop signs and stoplights. To echo @GODZILLA, don't skimp on a helmet. Go down to https://performancecycle.com/ and try a bunch on. Talk to the sales team there. Great people work there with lots of advice and experience. Get a helmet that fits comfortably, and isn't heavy. Imagine what it feels like with a 65 mph wind on it. Helmets with a big visor are dirt oriented so only get one if you plan on getting a dirt oriented bike. So much more info to give but that's all for now...

Is the thrill really worth it? Are you buying a $4-5MM umbrella policy? Why would you put your wife and kids through the anxiety? How will your daughter pay for medical school? Playing the long game is always better than short term thrills.

Strangely, there's some solid logic in this post, and I concur :notsure:

For me, I know my limits, and I'd kill myself on one of these things. Not saying you're the same, but you do have a bit of an addictive/compulsive personality (otherwise you wouldn't have achieved some of the shit you've done)...

When 'they' say to sleep on it; this may be one to sleep on for a few months and see how it comes out in the :washing:

As an alternative, maybe consider other adrenaline based options...

You could buy a plaid; you could spend the equivalent doing numerous airplane jumps ever over the next few years; you could take a vacation to someplace that you'd considered if you had FU money, etc....

    Just a thought...

Whatever this forum told me to do
    I'll second this.

I'm old enough to know that yes, I'm safe, but 100% of the other car driving fools are not.
    EVERYONE is on their phone.

and, I'm responsible for too many people to risk disability injury.

sidebar - my in-law is a Brainiac metallurgist. he rode a harley. he was ultra safe. was riding to a friends house for a cruise. turned onto his street and hit some unseen gravel on the road. Broke his hip. he was going less then 10mph. no traffic. he no longer rides.

and a MS Plaid has A/C.

Seriously, if you are wanting to get a bike and it'll be joyrides/commuter stuff, I cannot recommend the CB500 series of bikes enough. They are stupid easy to work on, long intervals, a decade of established reliability, and though they can hit 100 MPH they encourage you to stay around the speed limit, and you have 4 styles to choose from. They are very beginner friendly and priced well.

On the note of price, brace yourself for the fees and such. Look at MSRP and plan on at least an extra grand in price. If you legitimately would consider the CB500X I would offer you the same family/friend price I told my Niece's husband he could buy mine for. Not posting it publicly as I plan to list it soon and but PM if you'd consider it. Zero pressure and you need to get the right bike for you, and if the 500X isn't it, don't buy it!

Those of you in here with facial hair, how attached are you to your facial hair? Reason I ask is my workplace recently introduced a rule that makes us either shave or wear a beard-net. I took the shaving route and expected many others to do so as well but surprisingly most people elected to just wear a beard-net every day.
