2008 Toyota Tundra V8 with check engine light.

I have a 2008 Toyota Tundra V8 with 191k miles on it. Check engine light popped on the other day, had it read at a parts store. This is what it said on the paper they handed to me. Is this a big deal to get fixed? I’ve been told it’s not a huge deal? But it sure looks like a big deal to me. (not a car guy) Plz help!

Is this a major issue to get fixed? I’ve heard conflicting reports on how serious it is. And okay thank you!

Sometimes you can clean the pumps, sometimes you can simply replace the faulty component. You can repair it reasonably, or do the bypass kit.

Bear in mind, I’m no mechanic, just passing on what I’ve read over the last 3-4 years on this forum. It is major enough that it will run you $2k+ at the dealer. If you search around the forums you’ll find that the air injection system doesn’t do much after the first 30-60 seconds after startup. Hewitt Tech has a system to bypass the air flow injection system. If you’re not mechanically inclined (I’m not) you may have to find someone to install it, but at the end of the day it’ll still run you less than a whole new system.

Would I ruin the engine if I kept driving it?

That I don’t know. My sequoia (used) came with the Hewitt bypass already installed so I didn’t have to mess with it. I do know that it’s a very popular solution on these forums.

From what I gather, it mainly regulates emissions on cold starts? Where I live, we have no emissions test for registration, and not overly concerned about it if it don’t hurt the engine. Just annoying I can’t remove the engine light on the dash.

It will not ruin your engine but the truck will run in limp mode when it sets the code. That is annoying.

My 2008 did this very thing about two months ago. I just installed the bypass kit.

What do you mean “limp mode” ? So far it seems to be driving fine and starting fine etc.

Mine would be slow to accelerate when I was trying to go above about 45mph. Kinda like it was being held back. Felt like pulling a trailer. Once I cleared the codes and the check engine light was off, it drove fine.

But let me circle back. Are you getting lights other than the check engine light? I had a P2440 (valve stuck open). In addition to the check engine light it would get a flashing 4Lo and VSC OFF.

Mine says it’s stuck closed, and I’m only getting check engine light. So far I don’t notice a limp mode. I read if it’s stuck open it can cause limp. So no idea if it’s different if it’s stuck closed like mine. I just ordered a code reader so I can hopefully clear the code. A buddy of mine did it a few months ago when it popped up 1st

If you don't have to do emissions testing and it doesn't go into limp I would be tempted to just drive it. I have a Veepeak Bluetooth plug in tool that I use with the Car Scanner app on my IPhone that I would use to reset the code. Most days, it would only act up in the morning. After I reset it, it would be good the rest of the day. I think mine was sticking more than stuck.

Yeah, there is no emission testing where I live to renew registration. So I’m thinking I might just reset it (if it don’t go into limp mode) if it does…then idk what to do.. I only use the truck as a work truck. So I try not to drive it a ton.
