I have a 2012 tundra, it is only clicking once when I turn the key, sometime it will make a whining as if it’s trying to start. I checked the battery 12.6 volts. truck has a brand new starter and battery
I’m getting 12.6 volts to the starter and alternator as well
When I turn the key the power drops to 6 volts everywhere even directly on the battery terminals.

i need some help trying to figure this out. I have been reading other post but haven’t seen any like what i have going on.

Sounds like one of the new parts is defective - hopefully the battery. Try a different battery and see if you get the same results.

Battery V will droop when using (or trying to use) the starter, but 6V seems too low. Can you use some good (thick wire) jumper cables connected to another vehicle that is running and see if the engine turns over? That will help you know if your new battery is defective. Batteries can appear good with a 12.6 voltage, but if they have a high internal impedance/resistance they will drop a ton of V under load.

Tried a a known good battery out of my father 2017 tundra and getting the same thing, the starter was bench tested and is an oem Toyota one. Also tired jumping it off with the other tundra.

Try barring the engine over by hand. You’ll probably have to remove the tin splash shield for enough room / access to the crank pulley.

Just because the starter bench tested okay doesn’t mean it functions properly under the load of turning the engine.

Resistance is normal especially with spark plugs in.

Sounds like the battery is either bad or something in the circuit is grounding out

Could be from the extremely low voltage

Not unusual to get random error codes when the system sees 6 volts. The computer can’t boot up and acquire the sensor signals due to low voltage.

I went to try and spin the crank over again, it’s I guess originally I broke the nut or bolt lose. It’s seized up. Is the truck toast? Or can it be rebuilt?

There is obviously more to the story here - engine doesn’t seize due to starter swap.

Dangit. I was really hoping that wasn’t the case when I suggested barring the engine over.

Now to determine why it’s seized. Might as well pop the serpentine belt off to make sure it’s not just a seized accessory, but you should be able to slip the belt barring the engine.

Oil level OK? Pull the filter and look for metal in it…

Truck threw a check engine light for misfire cylinder 6, I have oil in the spark plug wells, (need to do valve cover gaskets haven’t gotten around to it) clearing the CEL and restarting truck makes it run right. This time it didn’t restart that’s why I thought my starter went out… now I’m going down the rabbit hole trying to figure out what’s going on…. Also the old starter was bad… had that bench tested too

Oil level is right where it should be, will be done working on it for now, will try and get more done to it on Tuesday.

There was a fellow last year who changed out his starter and somehow the Bendix bound up on the ring gear of his flex plate. You may want to pull the starter and see if you can turn over at the front pulley bolt.

Before you go tearing everything apart check for chewed up wires from a squirrel or rodent
