Every flight I've been on said the seat cushion was the flotation device. Never mentioned a life vest.

It's been a while since I've flown over open ocean. Our local airport does take off over the Chesapeake Bay.

When I was going to Hawaii and the UK a lot I don't remember life vests, but then I would always knock back a few airport bloody marys and fall asleep before take off.

Don't put off getting imaging and proper care. And be damn aggressive about getting proper diagnosis. My friend is in the hospital again, with a second surgery because he's crippled with pain and it's all because the piece of shit VA blew him off for a decade. The discs they went in to trim had hardened and couldn't be cut. Poor care may cost him so much more than just impacting a hunting or fishing trip. Push them to get you proper care, because too late is simply too late.
