Mine is a February 22 build date, took it home March 12th, currently sitting at 46k. I did once get check engine reduce power on a road trip with could other codes. Pulled over, shut truck off, restarted 10 minutes later and no problems since. One dealer said it might have had a hiccup when it was running through safety checks or whatever, like maybe dirt or something got in the way of a sensor. So if the truck senses something out of the ordinary that it can't figure out that's apparently the go too code it throws. They couldn't see the code in there when I took it in, just that it was on the screen still.

 

My 2023 just had the turbo fail. Engine warning light came on indicating reduced engine power. This truck has been a piece of shit since the day I picked it up. Extreme cab/wind noise with no fix after three door/cab seal replacements and denial by Toyota that there is an issue. Locked up emergency brake, and now my turbo has failed at 8400km. Toyota is only willing to replace the driver's side turbo, so it will probably be back in again when the passenger side goes. I have zero confidence/trust in this truck and am very reluctant to have my vacation ruined by having it break down when I am half way across Canada this summer. In hindsight, I should have bought a low mileage 2021. I have a 2010 with the small V8 in it and it has been an outstanding vehicle. 439,000km on it now and it's more reliable than the 2023 POS. This thread is by no means a comprehensive list of the number of defective turbos out there. Consider it the mere tip of the iceberg. The dealership in Lindsay Ontario is a small town (pop 20,000) dealership and their service dept has already replaced more than 20 turbos, many of them on 2023 Tundras. I've now approached the owners of nine Tundras in local parking lots and asked them about their trucks. Three out of the nine said they have had at least one turbo replaced. The one guy with a 2023 had BOTH replaced, then the passenger side went for a second time within 600km. The icing on the cake is that they've had the cab off the truck and now it has squeaking noise issues . I wish Toyota would refund me for the $65K I spent but I doubt that will ever happen. Feels like I'm riding a timebomb and it will be the standard "Toyota PFO" when it fails again out of warranty. Speaking of which, how long are these turbos covered by the warranty?

1)01/23 build date. It's an extracab SR5 4x4
2) Feb. 19, 2023 in service date
3)8411km on odometer when it first failed. Reset by Toyota then failed again within 40km
4) Turbo defective, driver's side. They are ordering parts now to replace it.

Wow, 9 pages, few failures but so much angst!

 

So sorry to be exhibiting such angst! Two more weeks of my truck sitting in the driveway and the new turbo part is not even at the dealership yet. No arrival date for the part. Have been told it should be three full days once it arrives. Now I have a $65,000 brick sitting in my driveway and my wife has has had to cancel a horse event (can't pull a horse trailer) and lose $195 on her entry fees, I've missed spring crappie season because I have no truck to pull my boat, and I am going to have to cancel a spring fishing trip in northern Ontario. I have a barn foundation that is half built but I can't go to the mill to get more lumber to work on it because my truck is a piece of shit. I'm not 100% sure but this might be causing me some of my angst.
In the past two weeks since my dealership diagnostic trip, I've approached another 19 Tundra owners locally - 4 out of 19 have had the turbo replaced in their 2022 or 2023 trucks. Three were 2024 build date. One had an engine error code that he said got "reset" and the dealer said not to worry. 4/19 is a very high percentage. I tried calling Toyota Canada to ask how many failures there have had and they basically told me to "PFO". Just lovely! This truck will be gone if it fails again. It really sucks that we don't have the same Lemon Law that exists in the US. It would be towed out of here today!

 

12/20/21 2022 crew cab 4x4 limited, turbo failure at 33500 miles. Lost power on highway, stalled had to wait to turn on again. Moved to the side worked. Dealership said nothing wrong no codes. Next day coming from work stalled again pulled off and turned on same procedure but this time it was discouraging. Clanking loss of power and shaking

 

I have a ‘07 Tundra 2WD TRD OR pickup that has mostly been rock solid. I made the mistake of having my transmission flushed at the 100k service and within a few days the tranny started slipping. To cut to the chase: Toyota split the cost of the new tranny with me so my share was $2700. I expect someone on here who works at Toyota to come back and tell me that I got screwed, but it’s water under the bridge now.

Originally I was looking for a used 4WD Tacoma (and I was in a bit of a bind and needed a vehicle quickly), but the only pickup of interest was this 2WD Tundra which was the managers vehicle. I did get a good deal on it but have been looking for a 4WD since about ‘09 when rumors were eluding to a diesel option coming. When that didn’t happen I just continued to wait until the next gen Tundra came out. Damn if it didn’t take a minute for THAT to happen! So for a number of reasons unrelated to the reliability issues of the 3rd gen Tundra, I have had to wait before pulling the trigger on buying. Sticker shock has been a big issue as well as deciding on what I wanted. With few trucks on the lots and ADM, I was not about to pay a premium … and certainly not on a truck where turbos were failing and other recall issues being reported. I just decided to wait. Now that Toyota has come out with the Platinum w/ the TRD OR packed, I finally had the truck I wanted. However, over the course of the last 6 months, I’ve learned more about the various complaints people have about wind noise, cheap interior components, poor figment, etc. as well as the blown engine issues, I’m once again “on hold.”

Maybe finding a ‘21 Tundra is the best plan. I’ve even been looking at the GX550 as an alternative but they are running the same engine. I’m tired of waiting but I keep coming back to the old adage that “it’s better to want what you don’t have than to have what you don’t want.”

Come on Toyota! Get it together already!!!

 

You're on the right path, just wait for now until all of the bugs get worked out. It's been 3 years now and few issues still remain.

 

I’ve had a 2024 for over 3 months now and have yet to experience any of the issues people discuss. I know it’s still a new truck, but wind noise isn’t an issue (it’s a truck and don’t expect it to be quiet), interior feels fine for me and on par or slightly better than my 2021 Tacoma, and fitment is just fine. Again it’s a truck and I am aware of how expensive they are but I guess I just don’t have as high of standards as some. Or I just don’t care enough cause it does what I need it to do. No doubt there have been engine issues, but there are plenty of tundras on the road now that are operating with no issues and there are quite a few 2022s with over 100k miles already. Never hurts to wait a few more years to hopefully have every compliant worked out, but no doubt even when these issues get solved people will continue to complain about other things. If you want peace of mind don’t read anything on the forum and just drive. If stuff happens get it fixed and continue driving!

 

You're forgiving.
As long as people have this attitude Toyota and others will foist subpar offerings on the truck consumer.
Call me (and many others) far more demanding for the $60k plus outlay. Toyota buyers spending close to $75k with taxes, plates...plus thousands for add-ons for a Tundra and subsequently justifying ridiculous issues with 'hey, it's a truck', only in America.

 

To each its own, but I’m just saying Toyota hasn’t left me stranded yet and I have faith in my new truck until it gives me a reason not to. At the end of the day it is still just a truck and I use it often for truck stuff and road trips. I by no means expect others have the same mentality that I do and that is fine. But I do understand that trucks are not aerodynamic so they will have wind noise, my Tacoma has wind noise as well. My interior seems completely fine, seats are comfy, nothing is rattling or broken, and there is a ton of space in the cab. As well at fitment of panels is not an issue on my truck. I’m not convincing anyone on how to spend their money and if they want to wait to buy a truck then that is just fine. I just want people to know that not all 3rd gens are bad and people like to repost anything that is going wrong to make it seem like every truck is just a ticking time bomb. Which is certainly not the case. But at the end of the day, I don’t see how having a mindset on it being a truck because that is what it is and meant to be used as such is a ridiculous way of thinking.

 

You're not driving a 'brick'; you're driving a clay-sculpted, wind-tunnel-tested vehicle that shouldn't have 'wind noise' to the degree these do. For Toyota to over-engineer an auto-deploying lower airdam on these trucks and then have something as simple as the window seals howling is a joke.

It's becoming obvious that gen 3 owners are split into two camps regarding issues: those candid and disgusted, and those who justify everything.
These problems will eventually be rectified and gen 3 trucks will be road-worthy and finessed to Toyota standards, but it's going to continue to take more time. When that happens we'll own one.

 

My thought process is like 90% of other Americans who expect excellence for our money spent, these outrageously-priced trucks should not have wind noise. If you want to settle for crap, go for it.
The Tundra has wind noise due to bullshit weatherstrip/seal design coupled with poor assembly/manufacturing, something that should be below Toyota and it's $50-80k offering. "Brick' nonsense notwithstanding.
The 2020 Tundra I"m driving (the truck that replaced my rejected '22 build) has no wind noise.
Per your comments, neither does my wife's '18 Lexus SUV.

Glad your truck isn't plagued by the issue, although I think you'd defend it anyway if it did. Hope springs eternal for others.

I just had the reduced engine power message show up and the dealer found "turbo boost sensor A. vacuum pressure reading with vacuum applied is out of code" and was told by Toyota to replace the turbo

This is my first Sequoia after two 4 Runners(never needing anything but maintenance and tires). My husband has had Tundras in the past and currently has a 23 SR5 with about 20,000 miles and running perfectly. My Sequoia is running great now.

Still Toyota all the way!

I think this page and spreadsheet need some updating. I just experienced a turbo failure and now that I'm looking around others are too.

After posting on FB I heard from someone with a '22 that had one turbo fail at 25k and his second at 27k. Another user posted about his '22 model losing the turbos at 53k

I'm not trying to incite an angry mob but think it's important that people know. When you look at the spreadsheet it looks like the issue was cleared up long ago and you were fine if you made it past 600 miles.

Sad to post that another has joined this club for wastegate failures....

1.) Mfg date: 2022
2.) Last in shop for rear brakes and regular maintenance a week prior to wastegate failure (Aug 2024)
3.) Failure: @108,000 km's (August 2024).
4.) Details: Dash displayed a Check Engine Light, and "Check Engine - Reduced Power". Turbo B Wastegate Actuator stuck closed. Internal failure of turbo wastegate assembly on driver's side. Error code: P25B673. No previous issues/concerns prior to this event.

I am currently awaiting details on whether the ongoing recall will address/include the turbocharger/wastegate issues and be replaced with the recall (fingers crossed).

But, as it stands, the cost to repair a single turbocharger is just over $11,000 Canadian, given that the truck is beyond the warranty mileage. This expense is quite steep and unrealistic for an average family (and knowing that there is another turbo that could also have an issue at any point).

I am deeply disappointed not only with the turbocharger failures but also with the fact that these issues are occurring even at relatively higher mileage. The situation is frustrating and concerning, as it impacts both the vehicle’s performance and my confidence in its reliability.

UPDATE: Turbo has been replaced and truck is running again. Truck was out of commission for a total of 21-days.

After some initial discussions and uncertainty, we submitted a claim to Toyota Canada. They responded after 2-days and said they’d replaced the turbo and cover the entire cost. Toyota also covered the cost of a rental (up to $65/day) and only after the truck was out of commission and in their lot x10 days. We were responsible to cover the insurance on the rental ($32/day).

Note for others: the rental $65 per diem got us a VW Tiguan and not a truck.

Honestly, I’m quite impressed with Toyota’s overall customer service. It isn’t a good situation but it seems like Toyota is trying to do everything in their power to make it right.

 

The new engines for the recall ARE coming complete with turbos. The Alabama motor plant started shipping motors destined for dealers a couple of weeks ago. Employees at the plant confirmed this info on FB, so I think it can be trusted.

Given that your truck is out of warranty I would fight like hell to have the engine replaced under the recall and NOT pay for a turbo out of pocket. I would think the dealer would agree to this. The big unknown is how long it will take to get an engine out to them. I would hope that they would prioritize the already blown engines (and turbos) that are sitting at dealers.

 

Kind of a long story, but I thought it was worth sharing and hopefully could help some other tundra owners out in the future. I have a 22 SR5 OR with a 12/21 build date. I purchased the truck January 13 of 22. At 28,000 miles the truck went to the dealer with a check engine light turbo B wastegate stuck closed. The technician said they had a permanent sometimes temporary fix. I opted that route. They advised me that if the check engine light came in again they would need to replace the turbo. Six months later the check engine light came on with 35,000 miles. I took it back to the dealer. They said a turbo needed replaced so I dropped the truck off June 15. Went back July 10 to pick up the truck and low and behold they replaced the wrong turbo. So they said they needed to take the cab off and replace the other turbo. While this was happening I opened up a case with Toyota and I also filed a lemon law claim through Toyota. As of today both turbos were replaced. The truck is in my possession. Toyota offered me two options as far as Pennsylvania lemon law goes. They would purchase my truck for what I paid for it plus total interest of my entire loan or they would replace the truck. I opted for the replacement. They are replacing it with a not yet built 25. I just received an email today of a 10/7 estimated build date and possibly in the new truck by Christmas. Same exact truck and it will essentially be a key swap. I take my truck and hand them two sets of keys. They give me a brand new 25 exact same truck. Everything else stays the same as far as terms and conditions . Hopefully this helps everyone. As of right now my truck to date has spent more than three months at the dealership.

 

23 SR5 Non hybrid @25k kms . Right side waste gate stuck . Freed up for now but they will be replacing turbo .

Left bank turbo. Really hoping this is the only thing I’ll deal with… turbo assembly replaced. Total turn around time about 1.5 weeks so not bad by any means. Thanks to the tech for getting it back!

 

So December 14 update I received my 2025 exact same truck through my Toyota lemon law claim all we did was swap keys they gave me a brand new 25 same exact build as I had in 22 I have attached the two window stickers. I paid MSRP in 2022 and this is what I got in return no money exchanged hands. Toyota referred to it as a collateral swap.

 

Sweet! Toyota really stepped up to the plate.

 

Based on symptoms, I believe mine just failed yesterday (20 Dec 2024). 2022 Tundra SR5 double cab w/ 6.5' bed, manufactured in Texas, 6/22. I'm having it hauled to a dealership in Allentown, PA, on Monday, 23 Dec. More to follow as I get feedback from their service rep. Unfortunately, I bought it in Clarksville, TN, drove to Pennsylvania for the holidays (with no issues), and had planned to drive it back on 8 Jan. I might have to make other travel arrangements now.

UPDATE: Turns out, it wasn't an issue with a turbo. Within two hours of delivery, Bennett Toyota in Allentown, PA, dropped the oil pan on my 2022 Tundra and let me know it was "full of metal". The dealership contacted Toyota Corporate and provided me with a loaner vehicle (2025 Camry --I will never buy one) while my truck was in for repairs. On 2 Feb Toyota opened the recall and Bennett ordered a new engine. They finished the install on Valentines Day and I picked up the truck on 25 Feb. I would have picked it up sooner, but weather in Tennessee prevented travel. I couldn't be happier with the treatment and service I received from Bennett Toyota. A breakdown like this on a new truck (just 34,000 miles on it) can test brand loyalty. Bennett restored my faith in Toyota!

 

Pass side was replaced !

Today at 30955kms the Drivers side turbo has also failed . Same issue , stuck wastegate !


I’m nervously happy to report no issues with the 24 . Which is now at 13800kms


Edit : Picked up the truck today . I asked the parts manager if the new turbos are the same part number as the ones that failed . He said “NO” they have a superseded number now so all replacements are different turbos . Hopefully that’s a good thing ! He made a joke and said “ I hope they have it fixed now or we are going to start installing the turbos with Wing nuts “ LOL
