Which is exactly what’s happening with my dad. He’s slightly loosing some weight, but 100% of the weight he’s loosing is all muscle…and he’s replacing all that muscle with body fat. He has been talking about going to the gym and loosing weight for the past 20~30years. Whenever he brings it up to me, i’ve been in total agreement. I’ve also had multiple friends tell me that they should get into shape. Meh….do what you want, is my thought (that i don’t say out loud). It’s your body and your life. It doesn’t take care of itself. It requires maintenance just like anything else in this world. Nature’s reward for building muscle on our bodies is that the muscles will burn calories when at rest. While on the other hand, our bodies are penalized for building fat, and fat doesn’t burn any calories. Both scenarios WILL always play out with everyone. We just have to choose which route to take.

Breaking bad habits can be the most challenging ever. But we only get one body and one shot at life. It doesn’t mean anyone has to be a “gym bro”, but the human body wasn’t designed to be sedate. And this goes for 99.9% of the population. I totally understand that there are some people out there who have underlying health issues (thyroid for one) that can cause uncontrollable weight gain. But for the rest of us, well it’s just buckling down and dedicating to making ourselves healthy.

We invest lots of our time into _____, instead invest some of that time into our own health!


Oh, and one last bonus. If you loose fat, your pen fifteen will look bigger!

It’s way too easy to feel like talking about what you’re going to do actually accomplishes something.

I am intentionally being far quieter about my goals. I don’t want that dopamine hit of people nodding and saying, “ahh, that’s good/cool/smart.” It works against you. Feels like progress when it’s not. Keeps you from actually going and doing it.

I would tell him, gently and respectfully, I think he needs to stop talking about it. It’s working against him.

My BIL has been on it for a while.
