I've been able to avoid surgery so far, and I hope to continue the trend. Everyone has different pain tolerance levels, but everyone I know who has had surgery always says it sucks. Degree of suck varies from person to person, but it's always suck or one kind or another. Focus the pain on something constructive if you can. It'll help if there's an outlet so you don't pop your cork if one of the dogs/kids/wife bumps the arm or something... another thing that always seems to happen after surgeries.

Funny thing, I broke my dominant (right) wrist in college and started using my computer mouse and doing a number of daily tasks with my left hand. I never went back to a right handed mouse, and find it convenient to this day to have some higher dexterity in my non dominant hand. Who knows, might be a silver lining to your ordeal!

Speaking of injuries and amputations, I came close to cutting off my index finger when I foolishly was cutting toward myself with a box cutter when it slipped cutting 3/4 through my finger. I knew I was in big trouble when I instantly got dizzy and nauseous and couldn't move my finger. Ended up needing surgery for a severed tendon and now only have about 70% total movement after all these years. Tilly's tip of the night, never ever cut toward yourself with anything sharp.

 

that's when you use the other hand for something else...

 

I smooshed my foot when racing dirtbikes a few years back. I got to keep the plates and screws that were in my foot. I had them in for 8 painful months. Apparently my body didn’t like the stainless steel, so the surgeon removed all the hardware. And it literally was a grab bag of hardware of random lengths and diameters. I’m thinking that the hospital sends an orderly down to the local hardware store with a dustpan and a broom to gather up random screws off the floor. Me being a remodel carpenter, i would have totally fired myself if i had ever installed screws like that into any of my finish work projects. Man, that was sure a painful 1.5 years that i wouldn’t wish on anyone.


I labeled both my feet before pre-op so that there would be zero chance of a mistaken identity between the two.

 

Every piece of titanium in my daughter's back (L4-S1 fusion with pelvic anchors) from her accident this past Christmas has a serial number listed on the surgery details we got post-op. between the screws, the rods, the anchor points, set screws, and other elements there's over 50 individual numbered pieces in her lower back.

 

When I had knee surgery the surgeon had me indicate which knee and then autographed it to make certain we were all on the right page (knee).

 

Damn. How's she doing?

 

That was a horrible accident. I hope she continues her recovery well.
