Our state inspection is pretty relaxed, obd2 just get the plug in and gas cap test, no mirrors under the skirt, no tailpipe probes. If I could get my test pipes to somehow pass O2 thresholds, I’d probably leave them on for testing and just hope they don’t get “nosy”

I had 5% on my work van and did over 3k miles a month in it, I got pulled over at least 4 times for tint and always got a warning, hahah I always blamed it on my boss not getting it fixed, I would try and employ the roll down window tactic often, not sure if it helped or not

If i were gonna have magnets (or stickers) made for a fake buisness, what should it be? Nobody seems to like my original idea.

Did you ever get your truck tuned?
They can remove the rear O2 sensors from the ECU now when you tune em. Not sure if it would trigger a fail for "not ready" or what. But it makes the CEL go away.

I asked quantum to remove it from my 03 ECU that I'm still waiting on. In the meantime I scored a used URD o2 simulator plug n play. I'll see if I pass inspection with the new ECU on January and report back. If I fail, I'll swap in the OEM ECU and plug back in the O2 sim for the re-test.

I've had illegal window tint on all but one vehicle I've ever owned going back 20 years now. Typically 5-15%. I've only been stopped once and got a warning. They don't seem to care about tint here.

15% is the sweet spot. Just dark enough to give you privacy without being so dark it's hard to see at night.

Before I lived in a southern-most state I lived in a northern-most state. In the town I lived in in said northern-most state the police liked to pull over cars with tint on the windows & they'd give you two choices -'take this razor & remove it here & now', or choice two was impound the car - here & now.
So when I moved to southern-most state I was a little sensitive. When I got the windows tinted I answered "the darkest tint that is 50 state legal" as I had just arrived at the 6th state of residence since I'd begun driving slightly over a decade prior.

The Lumar tint was great. The shop not so much. I got lightly rear-ended on the way home. So I went back & had him cut out the tint he did between the 3rd brake light & the window - making the CHMSL more visible. Two years later I moved to another northern state where those windows were illegal & they had annual safety inspections. That's when I began my arrive for inspections with the windows all the way down. Worked for me over many years. That's the car I sold to the friend in a neighboring state, who had to switch the glass. IMO easier to swap the glass, lube the tracks & window regulators, then it is to remove the tint.

I heard a new term the other day at our local bar from a Gen Z: Unicorn - I told her I just wanted to be a stay-at-home Dad type who cooked cleaned and worked on the family vehicles. She said I would be a unicorn then.

    That sounded pretty good.

    "Mr. Bee's Unicorn Services"

Your online name lends itself well to a "hobby farm" beekeeper type. "Mr. Bee's Bees" I also like "The Bee's Knees"

How about be a sperm donor? "Mr Bees Donations - Where the Customer Always Comes First."

So many options, the world is your oyster man!

I gotta ask…is it ever worth it to do your own window tint and not get bubbling or should you always take it to a professional?

Not worth it for me. Having it done professionally was never that expensive for me. Not sure what they charge these days though. It's been 7 years since I paid for it.

I went to a local guy who’s been in business for 25 years. He offers lifetime warranty and it was $100 for the two front windows to match the rear stock glass. I went in at 2:45 and was driving out at 3:14. Zero bubbles and it looks great.

Anyone know if ceramic tint can stand up to the texas sun? Everything i've got has developed tint bubbles since moving out here.

i'd still really prefer some of that blueish metallic tint like lexus used, but not if its gonna bubble if my truck gets left in the sun for a bit.

It does and it’s worth the money. Last truck and current truck have it vs the regular tint and you can feel the difference. Mind you our cabs aren’t well insulated so it still gets hot if it’s parked out in the sun.

Quality tint and quality install doesn’t usually bubble.
I got 3m on the 4r and the shop does lifetime warranty on that product, it started to peel where the window goes into the channel at the top after 7 years, they replaced both fronts

also a thread popped up in my 4r group about the blueish tint, one installer said even the good stuff will bubble and peel after a while; it’s mainly a show car kinda application. He was talking about how later model Toyotas have privacy glass, that isn’t even a tint, embedded in the glass so even using that stuff would look strange from the front to the rear windows(non smoked fronts vs smoked rears) but I wouldn’t doubt if the Lexus blueish is embedded in the glass just like the smoked “privacy” glass

Bubbling is indicative of either (a) adhesive failure or (b) improper install.

Ceramic is doable. See advice from last time you brought this up: https://www.tundras.com/threads/1st-gen-lunch-table-general-discussion.60450/page-1712#post-3313140

That advice still stands. Find someone that specifically installs Llumar. It's the best you can get and I literally never saw a job come back for anything, peeling corners, bubbles, nothing. And it lasted in the FL heat for an eternity. Some of that was our install wizards (I was not one), but Llumar is A+.

this tint lasted 10+ years in pasadena with partial shade. Back windows are fine, but both fronts failed.

    sexy & i know it.

the titan, sequoia, and jeep made bubbles.
    IMG_8117.jpg

i'll probably do llumar ceramic i've been to one of those pro liscensed shops before in south houston. But i want metallic mirror on the cap for sure. Privacy style.

yea, no good excuse why i'm dragging my feet on this, but every now & then polo will scratch at the inside of the window if i have to leave him in the truck & get just out of sight (like under the truck or behind another car. He does great if he can watch me go into a store, or see me (pumping gas or messing around in the cap) but he wants to help if i'm helping, and sometimes the floor is lava.

Man, this knock sensor and/or sensor wiring has gotta go. Seems like it’s acting up more now it’s cold in the morning. Once again, P0328 popped before I could even make it out of the neighborhood. It only pops when engine is cold, and it’s cooler out. 79,157 miles (for my ref)

I went to tint my ride in Kemah. Dude has 25 yrs of experience and almost all 5 star reviews. He had me in and out in 30 minutes for the two front windows and it was $100.

Sounds like the owner of the audio/tint shop I worked at. That dude could whip through an entire sedan in 30-45 minutes with all 4 doors, rear window, and a tint strip. Tinted to the edge on all windows, perfect, seamless fit.

I could never do that. I had trouble doing the 44x54 window in my half bath downstairs. It was nuts.

More Waltrip grille work today. Still haven't wetsanded and polished. Still debating whether I want the effort, when the paint already looks great.

So instead, I replaced the 5mm foams on the rear for the mesh. Then test-fitted the mesh, and the support bracket. I still need to plop on the 8mm foams around the edge where the grille meets the hood, just to get it back to from-factory spec. Overall, pretty happy with how this is turning out. Glad I had the time to spend on it, and took the time and patience to do it. Red TRD logo for the bottom driver side corner is on-order with one of the local dealers that would let me purchase online. World Toyota, for whatever reason, still has their Toyota online portal effed up, and they won't let you select store pickup, or put in an address. I told them about this with the last part I ordered, but they just blew it off? So weird. Like, you're missing out on an entire revenue channel, dumbasses

EDIT: Dammit there are doghairs showing on that last larger pic. Those aren't flaws, those are plotthound fur. :D

Looks awesome dude. How much longer does it need to cure before you install it on the truck?

Supposedly, per the can, it'll be fully hardened in 24 hours. But I'm not doing anything hostile with it for 72 hours, and intend to give a solid 5-7 days to cure, and to get the TRD logo in my hands and installed. I'll make the final call on whether I'm going to wetsand and cut once I'm confident the enamel is well-hardened.

If I wetsand and cut, unless I do it while installed on the truck, it means pulling the mesh back out so it's easier to keep clean. I think it'll be easier to do the work on the truck so the hood is holding it in place.

I'd kinda like to get those 285s installed on the Rocktrix smoked machined wheels and install it all on the same day. I think the stainless grille, with the machined wheels, and the smoked Limited side trim will look good. I just hope I don't like it more than the gold, because, well damn, that would suck, I love my gold wheels!

Funny to see all the tint talk today, because I tinted my front windows.

not quitting my day job, and I threw out 2 windows worth of tint before I was satisfied. Not perfect, but looks better than i expected and actually think it makes the truck look significantly better overall.

used Gila 20% from the parts store. Agree the cost savings aren’t really worth it, I’ll just have a pro do it next time. But I kinda wanted the challenge and to see if I could do it myself.

Got original IS TRD wheels and new BFG 285/75s put on, then did a headlight restoration. Next up is new lbjs and an alignment where I’ll ask for 3 or more degrees of caster, should clear up the minimal rubbing on mudflaps
