Keep in mind that there are far fewer 5.0 F150s than any of the other engines. Most of what you will see on the road are the 2.7 or 3.5 turbo jobs. The 5.0 is a much smaller percentage of the F150, so % of total produced V8 F150s could easily be matching the Tundras. It'd be a beast to try and pull that specific info, though.

Given Ford's production volume, they probably build more F-turds in a year with the 5.0 than Toyota makes (all) Tundras.

When I was active on a F-150 forum, one of the Mods got sick of all the 5.0 whanks saying the first gen 3.5 EB was a POS. He did some searching in the forum (not scientific; but interesting) and there were more people complaining of blown 5.0's than 3.5's. Remember, Forums = Facts.

Additionally, Ford redesigned your engine in 2018. The brilliant changes include low-friction piston rings and the forum blew up with people having oil consumption issues. Ford even published a TSB for it. Think it said "Fill the engine with the appropriate amount of oil, etch a mark in the dip stick, tell the customer to fuck off for 5,000 miles and come back to have the dip stick read" Or something like that, I'm paraphrasing.

Again, in true forum facts...most dudes that drove their truck hard from the get go didn't have issues. Those that babied it did. The Form-fact was you have to run it hot and hard (TWSS) to break it in properly (yes ma'am!).

I wasn't saying there weren't more V8 F150s than Tundras. There are. I was saying that all the F150s being new doesn't mean it's the V8s. Plus, how many people keep a truck anymore? They all swap them out every few years. Even the Tundras. They just all look the same for a longer stretch so you can't see the difference as easily. If Toyota made the Tundra have a new look every 2-3 years, you'd think all the Tundras were new too. :p (Just playing devil's advocate. I don't actually mind the ribbing about the ferd.)

They redid it in 2021. Oil consumption issue decreased each MY, and by 2020 MY it was exceedingly rare. Haven't been able to find any issues of consumption in the 2021+ except they has some porous blocks briefly. Chalk that up to the same type of issue as Toyota rusty frames. Also, resolved before my MY.

What it boiled down to for me was that used V8 Tundras were either too far away or way overpriced. That put to looking at new V8s. If you had to buy a new V8, which one would you get?

Told ChatGPT, my name is Adam, I drive an F150, live in Wyoming, and to roast me

“Adam from Wyoming, driving around in your F-150 like you're the king of the prairie. You’ve got enough horsepower to plow through snowdrifts or, more realistically, impress the cattle. Living in a state with more antelope than people, and you’re out here with a truck that could double as a small apartment.

But let's be honest, Adam, the only thing your F-150 hauls on most days is your sense of rugged individualism. And hey, it’s great for Wyoming’s wide-open spaces—because you need a lot of room for that ego. But we both know the real reason you drive it: just in case you need to escape to a remote mountain cabin to contemplate why you spent so much on gas last month.”

I give you chit...but yes, all points taken. Glad furd figured out the 5.0 issues cuz that is a delicious engine.

I am not married to the V8-or-die cult and love the sound of booooooost. So the answer to your question is a 6.6ltr turbo DIESEL!

Diesel isn't an option for me. I have 2.9 mile commute. That is a death sentence to a diesel. Also, no diesels in 1/2 tons worth a shite. Try again. V8 gasser in a 2024 Model Year. Which one would you pick?

Stu from Washington, driving a diesel Chevy like you’re trying to outrun the rain. You must really love the sound of your engine drowning out any reasonable conversation. What’s the plan, Stu? Are you waiting for the day your Chevy finally breaks free from the traffic jams and goes full Mad Max on the I-5?

Living in a state known for being green and eco-friendly, and here you are, rolling coal like you’re in some kind of anti-Tesla rebellion. You’re probably the guy who wears a flannel shirt, drinks craft beer, and then rolls up to the brewery in a truck that could single-handedly undo all the good your recycling does. But hey, at least you’re prepared for that one time you’ll need to tow a house—or just park it in front of one.

Ah, Adam from Wyoming, out here driving an F-150 and preaching its superiority over the Tundra like it’s some kind of gospel. You really think that badge on the front makes you a connoisseur of trucks, don’t you? Meanwhile, people are out here driving Tundras and wondering if you’ve ever heard the phrase “reliability.”

Your F-150 probably guzzles gas like it’s at an all-you-can-eat buffet, but hey, at least it’s “superior,” right? You’re so committed to the Ford life that you probably think "Found On Road Dead" is just fake news. But let’s be real, Adam—whether it’s an F-150 or a Tundra, it’s not the truck that’s doing the heavy lifting; it’s your need to feel like you made the right choice in a state where the biggest traffic jam involves cattle.

Adam, the IT guy who lives in a trailer—talk about mixing metaphors. You’re out here fixing everyone’s tech problems by day, only to come home and reboot your Wi-Fi router like it's the most exciting thing in your single-wide. You’ve got a job in the virtual world but are living in a space that’s barely bigger than your browser’s cache.

Do you troubleshoot your trailer's "system" by turning the lights off and on again? Maybe the reason you’re so good at dealing with crashes is that you’ve already mastered the art of avoiding your own. But hey, at least you don’t have to worry about a big commute—just roll out of bed and into your office chair, assuming it fits inside.

Hilariously, the Ferd gets better mileage than the Tundra. I would not call it superior though. I bought least bad option for a new V8. If I could rewind time I'd kick my own ass for thinking about getting rid of Vera. Should have kept that truck. Live and learn.
