Key wont go into ignition

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you guys can give me some ideas on how to fix my tundra. I parked my truck for about 30 seconds and when I went to turn it on the key didn't turn. I tried to take it out and put it in again but now the key wont go in at all. I've tried wiggling the steering wheel but it hasn't worked and it is locked. Thanks everyone

 

Sometimes with locked steering wheels, if you pull firmly clockwise and attempt, or firmly counterclockwise and attempt, you'll have luck.

Do you see any visual obstruction that's preventing a key from going in?

 

I've been trying both ways with a lot of force and it's still not working, I don't see any obstruction but there must be something since they key wont fit.

 

Have you ever sprayed anything inside the keyhole?

Do you have any graphite lube? I'd hate to tell you to spray something like triflow or PB blaster in there to try and break anything free.

 

I don't have any graphite lube unfortunately so I tried spraying wd40 in there but no hell

Even if your steering wheel was full lock, the key would go it, it just wouldn't turn.
Do you have another key to try?
Are you sure your key isn't bent or twisted?
If it has any twist, try to gently flatten it in a vise..

See if you can find a Toyota blank and see if it will go in..

 

Been there. It’s called a worn down key. Time to get a new one made. A keysmith will do it cheaply, the official Toyota blank to cut is more expensive.

 

This and That. If turning the wheel won't free it up, I'd bet the key is worn down. Less expensive to get a new once cut than a new lock cylinder installed.

 

So it was sort of a fluke. Turned out a tiny key ring was wedged in-between the key and ignition. So I took some needle nose pliers and started yanking on the key ring til it mangled and came unraveled and fell nally came out.

 

I've had a similar issue. Key was so worn and used for so long that it damaged the pins in the ignition to the point they couldn't work together anymore. Took the tumbler out and brought to a locksmith where he rebuilt it and made a fresh key. Worked like new after that!

 

Some part of the internal mechanism is likely just stuck or jammed in the tumbler. If you have a palm sander or jig saw or something else that vibrates -- maybe ask your wife . Seriously though, take the sanding disk off a palm sander and put the business end against the lock cylinder and turn it on. The hope is that the vibration will unstick/jamb the cylinder.
If that works and you're able to get the key to insert, VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT TAKE THE KEY BACK OUT!

Follow the instructions on this video and you'll be good to go. I just had to do this on my ignition cylinder. Mine would accept the key, but wouldn't turn. I removed the two offending wafers and mine is working flawlessly.

That video sounds exactly like what I’m seeing in his photo above. It looks like one side of the split tumbler is sticking and he probably needs to pop it back over and reset with a Toyota key that’s not his own.
