My thought process is, irreparably stunting your child’s physical development is abuse. We all recognize that. Well…is it really any different if you’re intentionally stunting your child’s social or emotional development as opposed to physical? You’re turning kids loose in the world who have a withered, atrophied ability to process delayed gratification, different opinions, traditional norms of social behavior, etc. This will set them up for a lifetime supply of pharmaceuticals just to get by in reality.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that participants in the gentle parenting movement are patting themselves on the back for borderline abusing their kids.

PS: gentle parenting is a thing. I did not make this up. Think Montessori-style child-directed education, but applied to every aspect of a child’s life. The child makes the decisions for how to behave, what to eat and when, etc.

 

This might explain why every kid my kid goes up to and starts talking to just stares at her like she has 2 heads. And their parents don't encourage them to say hi or anything, they just stand there (even when they're not staring at their phones).

 

I'm not fully disagreeing with you and I do see your point. I just don't fully accept it as abuse. It's more of a lack of parenting than it is abuse. It's a bit of a slippery slope to label no accountability parenting as abusive because it may set their kids up for unprepared failures later. That's all I'm saying.

To take it a step further when compared to the emotional abuse that a parent can render unpon a child's development through their choice of abusive and demeaning language towards the child, it's not abusive at all. Your gentle parenting model is just lacking substance. They aren't parents at all and that doesn't necessarily equate to them being abusive. I just call them shitty humans.

Agreed that it is a slippery slope, and I am the last person to advocate for more regulation or bureaucratic involvement in people’s lives.

But there is not a clear-cut line between abuse and neglect. In fact, child neglect is abuse, and it happens to be the most common form of abuse (76% of all child maltreatment cases vs 16% for physical abuse).

Child neglect has its own categories (physical, educational, psychological, emotional, medical, etc). I think if you’re abdicating your parenting responsibilities to a child who is by definition not equipped to handle parenting himself or herself in any way, maybe we should at the very least heap scorn upon those parents heads, especially those who use it to signal their virtue to others in a bid for positive attention.

And maybe we need to have the conversation: does this not fit the definition actual psychological and emotional child neglect?

 

It's definitely neglect, which as you say is abuse. Either way IMHO parent's with this mind set aren't parents at all. They are failing miserably at their commitment to help foster growth in our ever evolving world. And they themselves should be blamed for the lack of accountability as well as the entitlement issues we are seeing in the younger generations. In the end, I think we feel the same way in that gentle parenting is only gentle on their own egos and provides very little benefit to their children.

Some of us just aren’t huggers….even with family members. I receive about 10 hugs a year, and give out about 2 hugs. I’d like to bring that number down closer to 8. Last sunday, i helped out a bro friend replace a torn engine mount and replace an aluminum transmission hard line in his 2019 Ram Cummins. We started in the afternoon and finally finished to close to midnight. He needed his truck operational for monday morning’s deliveries. When we finished, he walked up to me and said thanks. I thought he was going to give me a light, “punch in the shoulder” thanks, or even a fist bump. But nooooo, he went in deep for the hug. I didn’t see it coming otherwise i would have tried to dodge it. That’s the last time i wrench on his truck!

Driving through on an interstate highway is a lot different than going into neighborhoods with a pocket full of cash.

Also, it wasn't about safety. It was about the quality that the conversion could be. If it's meth-ville USA, there's a high likelihood of shit workmanship on the trailer.

 

Appleton isn't known to be or even close to being a meth heaven. And a few pews will help protect your pocket of cash. I've always carried cash on me and have yet to get ripped off or exploited, even in shit neighborhoods of Denver.
