LOONG time Taco owner, war horse, and lurker…. Tundra hunting.

Greetings one and all,
Long before the internet, I was a taco owner and would 4x4 in the So Cal mountains near Arrowhead and Big Bear. Also multiple runs though the Eastern Sierras. Loved that 88’ truck and it never let me down. Fast forward, Marines, life, a wife, 5 sons, and now 5 grandkids and growing, I going back to what I loved. A truck.

I have been trying to decide between a Raptor, Tacoma, or a Tundra. One of my sons LOVES his Raptor. But, I loved my Taco. After a few months of looking/researching, I think I have decided on a Tundra. Preferably a 1794, used, but we shall see.

Thank you all who post and contribute to this site. It has been unmeasurable helpful in my decision process AND entertaining. I am currently 30+ pages into the stickied post “what have you don’t to your Tundra.” Love the stories, the pics, the sharing of ideas for no other reason than a love of tacos and brotherhood.

ok, enough from this old war horse. . I need to get back to reading…!

What year/gen 1794 are you looking at?

 

More than likely a 2.5. Any year you would recommend? I have my eye on a 2017 atm.

 

I’ve been in the market for a 2.5 too, so I’m more than willing to share my notes. 2.5 starts with the 2014 model year. FlexFuel engines (FFV) pop up a lot through the 2018 model year, which I’m personally avoiding because they have issues of the ethanol sensors incorrectly creeping up and influencing MPG while also causing cold hard starts from dumping fuel. You can tell if it’s FFV by the vin, and the carfax will often say FFV as well. I recommend you read up about it to see if it’s something you’d be willing to deal with. 2018 they updated the cluster with a more modern screen, added the LED style headlights and Toyota safety sense features. Next update comes with 2020-2021 where Apple CarPlay is added, push button start is available (along with keyless entry and you can program the credit card key) and the fender antenna disappears. So it really comes down to what creature comforts you want. I’m personally hoping to find a 2020-2021, and I’m taking my time waiting on the right one to pop up. Best of luck hunting yours down.

Great notes and TY for sharing. If I had the $, 2020 would be my year also. I too am staying away from the flex fuel models. This may be my last truck I ever own. So, I will also be personalizing it as I go forward. My wife calls that “spending more $ on the same car.” . I can’t help it, being in So Cal, I’m a car guy. Always have been. And what’s better than driving up to the mountains or up the coast on PCH in a rig that runs great, sounds great, and looks like the owner take pride in his equipment?

 

sounds like the 2017 would be a good fit for you then. Also 2018 was the last year of the coveted external transmission cooler.

 

Welcome Teufel! Also take note of the delete of the trans cooler. Which I think is 18. The 17 still has one, maybe one of the 2.5 owners can correct me if I'm wrong. Good Luke hunting, I'd go with a tundra all day over the taco.

I'm partial to the '17. I wanted the 36 gallon gas tank without TSS.
But if something were to happen to my '17, I would find a low mileage '21 and throw a trans cooler on it.

 

Oooohhhh, I’m ALL ABOUT factory trans coolers! This I did not know about the 17’s and the one I am drooling over DOES have the trans cooler…. So many Tundras & Mods, so little time OR $$$….

On that ‘17 note, it’s white and instead of murdering it out, I’m thinking about “Ghosting” it. All white but the grill and rims…. I love white. Safest color while driving and EASIEST to match with other colors. With the 1794 & the saddle brown leather interior? I’m wondering, maybe the calipers a bronze? Or start with a red caliper and bronze the factory rims? For me less is more, but I also like pop and being different…

Any thoughts on style choices?

 

I’ve always been a sucker for a white TRD Sport, TRD Pro, or platinum with all the bits color matched. Red is always a safe bet with white to me, but bronze could be more subtle and stand up better to brake dust. I do like how bronze wheels look on them too.

 

Red and yellow is the best color combo. But you already know that.

seriously though, a ghosted out truck would like good with bronze wheels and calipers.

 

so, if I ghost it out, bronze powder the factory rims, what color for the calipers? Bronze on bronze? Red? I considered white behind the bronze rims until I considered the break dust…

Im open to ideas.

Seems high for a Limited 2020 with 270k miles for $39k. Or am I off base?

 

It has 81k miles and it’s a truck well known on the site as well taken care of and properly modified.

2016-2017 are the years to have for the larger fuel tank and lack of TSS beeping.


White and bronze look great (if it’s the right bronze, most bronze wheels have the color way off and look like matchbox toys ha).

 

I love all white builds! Go for it! That was my goal with mine but couldn't find a white one, had to settle for silver...

 

Great looking rig. What mirrors did you opt for? Lifted?

 

Those are stock OEM mirrors and just a +1/2 tire size is all (265/70-18). It’s a work truck for sure.

Bench seat and a long bed in a Tundra is the bees knees for a 1/2 ton.

 

Well she looks fancy. Though you did the tow after market mirrors. On a side note, “BuzzardsGottaEat” same as worms…. Great name. Tips
